Chapter 1: The Man Santiago Never Expected

Chapter 1: The Man Santiago Never Expected

The echo of the opening door froze every soul inside the mansion.

Santiago blinked once, then frowned.

"Who are you?" he demanded, trying to recover the confidence that had evaporated from his face.

My father didn't answer immediately.

His eyes found me first.

He saw the bruise forming beneath my cheekbone.

He saw my trembling hands wrapped around my swollen stomach.

He saw the blood on the marble floor.

For one terrifying second, I thought he might lose control.

Instead, he inhaled slowly.

When he finally spoke, his voice was frighteningly calm.

"Valeria."

I nodded.

"I'm all right, Dad."

"No," he replied. "You're alive. That is not the same thing."

Santiago laughed awkwardly.

"Sir, I think you've misunderstood. This is a private family matter."

One of the attorneys stepped forward and handed Santiago a thick envelope.

"You've been served."

Santiago stared at the papers.

"What is this?"

"Civil claims."

"Emergency protective orders."

"Financial fraud investigations."

"And evidence of domestic violence."

His smile disappeared.

Beatriz stepped between them.

"This is absurd! My son owns this house."

The second attorney quietly placed another document onto the table.

"No, señora."

"The property belongs to Salazar Holdings."

Silence.

"What?"

"The mortgage default transferred controlling ownership six months ago."

Santiago's face turned white.

"That's impossible."

My father finally looked directly into his eyes.

"Nothing about your success was ever entirely yours."

"You expanded your company with financing guaranteed by Grupo Salazar."

"You believed those investors were anonymous."

"They weren't."

"They were me."

Santiago staggered backward.

"You..."

"I gave you every opportunity to become the husband my daughter deserved."

"You chose to become her executioner instead."

At that exact moment, the hidden clock on the wall emitted a tiny beep.

One attorney smiled.

"The livestream has finished uploading."

Santiago's head snapped toward the clock.

"What livestream?"

The attorney pressed play on a tablet.

His own voice filled the room.

"If you don't sign tomorrow, your baby will grow up without a mother."

Every threat.

Every insult.

Every strike.

Everything had been recorded.

Even Beatriz's cold instruction.

"Don't leave bruises where people can see them."

Neither of them spoke.

May you like

Neither of them could.

Outside, flashing police lights illuminated the mansion windows.
