Chapter 4 – The Last Name That Never Mattered
Five years later...
The Salazar Foundation opened its newest Family Recovery Center.
The building wasn't named after Ricardo.
It wasn't named after the corporation.
Above the entrance stood only three words.
The Valeria Center.
Inside...
Women escaping abusive homes found lawyers.
Doctors.
Counselors.
Childcare.
A safe place to begin again.
During the opening ceremony, reporters asked the question everyone had waited years to hear.
"Do you regret hiding your identity?"
Valeria looked at her son, now chasing pigeons across the courtyard.
Then she smiled.
"No."
"If I hadn't hidden my name..."
"I never would have discovered the truth about the man I married."
Another reporter asked,
"Do you hate Santiago Rivas?"
She considered the question.
Finally...
She shook her head.
"Hate keeps you connected to the people who hurt you."
"I chose something better."
"What?"
She looked toward the women entering the center with hope in their eyes.
"Freedom."
Later that evening, Ricardo stood beside his daughter as the sun disappeared behind the Mexico City skyline.
"You know," he said quietly, "when you were little, you once told me you wanted to change the world."
Valeria laughed.
"I was six."
"You've done it anyway."
She reached for her son's hand.
Together they walked toward the center's front doors.
Not as victims.
Not as survivors alone.
