Chapter 1 – The Empire Begins to Crack

The marble hall fell into absolute silence.

Not even the grandfather clock dared interrupt the moment.

Santiago Rivas stared at the silver-haired man walking through the front entrance with four security officers dressed in dark suits.

The older man didn't hurry.

Power never needed to.

He stopped beside Valeria.

His eyes swept across the room.

Her trembling hands.

The bruise blooming beneath her cheekbone.

The tears she had tried so desperately to hide.

Then he looked at Santiago.

"So."

His voice was calm.

"This is the man who believed my daughter belonged to him."

Santiago forced a laugh.

"I think you've misunderstood—"

Ricardo Salazar raised one finger.

"Don't."

The single word carried enough authority to silence the room.

For the first time, Beatriz lowered her wineglass.

"You have no right to enter our home."

Ricardo slowly turned toward her.

"I obtained a court order twenty-seven minutes ago."

One of the attorneys behind him stepped forward and handed a folder to Santiago.

"Emergency Protective Order."

"Emergency Asset Preservation Order."

"And a warrant authorizing investigators to seize electronic records related to financial fraud."

Santiago's confidence cracked.

"What is this?"

"This," Ricardo replied, "is what accountability looks like."

Valeria looked up at her father.

"You knew?"

"I knew something was wrong months ago."

His expression softened.

"But I respected your wish to live your own life."

"I only stepped in when your lawyer called tonight."

The antique clock on the fireplace suddenly chimed.

Ricardo smiled faintly.

"I've already heard every threat."

Every face in the room turned toward the clock.

Santiago frowned.

"What?"

Ricardo nodded toward it.

"The clock isn't antique."

"It contains encrypted recording equipment."

The color drained from Beatriz's face.

"No..."

"It recorded everything."

Every insult.

Every threat.

Every admission.

Every plan.

The room suddenly felt much smaller.

Then police officers entered.

Not one.

Not two.

An entire investigative task force.

Santiago finally understood.

May you like

This wasn't a family argument anymore.

It was evidence.
