Chapter 3 – Learning to Live Again

Chapter 3 – Learning to Live Again
Freedom felt unfamiliar.
There were mornings when Valeria still woke expecting to hear Santiago's footsteps outside her bedroom door.
Instead...
She heard laughter.
Her son's laughter.
Ricardo transformed one wing of his estate into a preschool.
Not because they needed it.
Because Valeria wanted children from struggling families to receive the education she once dreamed of providing.
She returned to teaching.
The newspapers couldn't understand why.
"The daughter of one of the richest men in the country chooses a classroom?"
She smiled every time someone asked.
"Children don't care about your last name."
"They care whether you show up."
Months became years.
The nightmares slowly faded.
One afternoon, while reading to her students, a little girl raised her hand.
"Miss Valeria?"
"Yes?"
"Who taught you to be brave?"
Valeria thought carefully before answering.
"My son."
The classroom giggled.
"But he was a baby."
She smiled.
"Exactly."
"He gave me someone worth fighting for."
Outside the classroom, Ricardo watched through the window.
