CHAPTER 14 — THE FIRST HEIR

The word “sister” echoed through the underground chamber.
Emily stared at the screen.
The teenage girl stared back.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Emily whispered:
“She knows me.”
Vincent immediately stepped in front of his daughter.
“Who is she?”
Sofia couldn't answer.
Her eyes remained fixed on the screen.
Daniel moved closer.
“Mom?”
Sofia finally whispered:
“Her name is Ava.”
Vincent turned.
“Ava who?”
Sofia swallowed.
“Ava Bellamy.”
Bellamy went completely still.
“No.”
Sofia looked at him.
“Yes.”
Bellamy stared at the girl on the screen.
His face lost all color.
“That’s impossible.”
The girl smiled.
“Hello, Charles.”
Bellamy dropped the phone.
The screen remained active.
The girl looked directly at him.
“You promised you'd come back.”
Bellamy's breathing became unsteady.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I was supposed to be.”
“Who did this to you?”
Ava smiled.
“You know who.”
Bellamy shook his head.
“No.”
Ava's eyes moved toward Margaret's empty chair.
“Ask your family.”
Vincent stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Ava looked at him.
“Vincent Moretti.”
“You know me.”
“I've known you longer than you think.”
“How?”
“You were there.”
“Where?”
“In the first room.”
Vincent stared.
“What first room?”
Ava looked at Emily.
“Where they made us.”
Emily stepped closer to the screen.
“They made us?”
Ava nodded.
“You and me.”
“And Daniel.”
Daniel stiffened.
Ava smiled.
“And the others.”
Vincent's voice became cold.
“How many?”
Ava's expression changed.
“Thirty-seven.”
Silence.
Vincent looked at Sofia.
“Thirty-seven children?”
Sofia nodded slowly.
“I only knew about eleven.”
Ava laughed bitterly.
“That's because the other twenty-six didn't survive.”
Emily covered her mouth.
Vincent felt something inside him break.
He turned away.
Then he looked back at Ava.
“Why are you showing yourself now?”
“Because the ledger has opened.”
“What does that have to do with you?”
“Everything.”
Ava leaned closer to the camera.
“The ledger wasn't created to record ownership.”
“Then what?”
“It was created to record experiments.”
Vincent stared.
“Experiments on children.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Ava looked at Emily.
“To create a bloodline that could never be controlled.”
A door opened behind them.
Everyone turned.
A police officer entered.
“Mr. Moretti.”
Vincent raised his weapon.
The officer immediately raised both hands.
“Easy.”
“What?”
“We found something in the ambulance.”
“What?”
“Margaret is gone.”
Vincent's expression hardened.
“How?”
“The ambulance driver was found unconscious.”
“And Margaret?”
“Missing.”
Sofia closed her eyes.
“She planned this.”
The officer continued.
“We also found a message.”
He handed Vincent a plastic evidence bag.
Inside was a small piece of paper.
Three words.
THE FIRST IS COMING.
Vincent looked at Ava's image.
She was smiling.
“You should leave.”
Vincent frowned.
“Why?”
“Because Margaret isn't your biggest problem.”
“Then who is?”
Ava's smile disappeared.
“Dr. Elena Vale.”
The laboratory door opened.
Elena Vale entered slowly.
She was an elegant woman in her sixties.
Silver hair.
Sharp eyes.
No emotion.
Behind her stood several armed guards.
She approached Ava.
“Enough.”
Ava didn't look at her.
“You're late.”
Elena smiled.
“You always were impatient.”
Ava's jaw tightened.
Vincent watched the screen.
“You're Elena.”
“Yes.”
“You created this program.”
“I refined it.”
“You experimented on children.”
“I studied human potential.”
“You kidnapped my daughter.”
“I protected your daughter.”
Vincent laughed bitterly.
“You people keep using that word.”
Elena looked at Emily.
“Come closer.”
Emily stepped backward.
Vincent stood between them.
“Don't speak to her.”
Elena smiled.
“You have no idea what your daughter is capable of.”
“I know exactly what she is.”
“What?”
“My child.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
“She is the culmination of twenty years of research.”
Vincent's eyes hardened.
“She is not your experiment.”
Elena looked at Sofia.
“You told him?”
Sofia stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Elena laughed.
“You still pretend to be brave.”
Sofia's face hardened.
“I stopped being afraid of you years ago.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
“You stopped being afraid because you thought you had won.”
She looked at Emily.
“You haven't.”
Ava suddenly stepped away from the camera.
The screen changed.
Another room appeared.
Rows of glass chambers.
Children sleeping inside.
Daniel stared.
“Those are the others.”
Ava nodded.
“Some are alive.”
Vincent's stomach tightened.
“How many?”
“Six.”
“Six?”
“The rest are gone.”
Emily stepped closer.
“Can we save them?”
Ava looked at her.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Open the second ledger.”
Vincent frowned.
“There's another ledger?”
Ava nodded.
“The first records the past.”
“The second controls the future.”
Vincent looked at Sofia.
“What does that mean?”
Sofia whispered:
“I don't know.”
Ava smiled.
“You do.”
Sofia stared.
Ava continued:
“Your mother told you.”
Sofia froze.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
Vincent looked at Sofia.
“You said your mother was dead.”
“She is.”
Ava shook her head.
“No.”
“She died when I was nine.”
“That was another lie.”
Sofia's face went pale.
Ava said:
“Your mother is the reason this program exists.”
Vincent stared.
“Who is Sofia's mother?”
Ava looked toward the camera.
“Helena Bellamy.”
Bellamy's face collapsed.
“No.”
Ava nodded.
“My grandmother.”
Bellamy whispered:
“She died.”
Ava smiled.
“She disappeared.”
Bellamy looked sick.
“Why?”
“Because she was the original scientist.”
Vincent turned toward Bellamy.
“You knew her?”
Bellamy shook his head.
“I knew the story.”
“What story?”
“That a woman named Helena Bellamy created the Moretti bloodline program.”
Vincent stared.
“Then why did you work for her?”
Bellamy closed his eyes.
“I didn't know she was alive.”
Ava interrupted:
“She wasn't.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What?”
Ava smiled.
“Not anymore.”
The laboratory lights suddenly flickered.
Elena turned.
“What happened?”
A technician shouted:
“Security breach!”
Alarms began sounding.
Elena's face hardened.
“Who?”
“We don't know.”
A second alarm sounded.
Then another.
Ava smiled.
“They found us.”
Elena looked at her.
“Who?”
Ava answered:
“The people you forgot.”
Vincent heard gunfire through the speakers.
He looked at Sofia.
“We're going there.”
Sofia nodded.
Daniel stepped forward.
“I'm coming.”
“No.”
“I know the system.”
Vincent looked at him.
“You're staying here.”
Daniel shook his head.
“You need me.”
Vincent wanted to argue.
But Daniel was right.
He had opened the vault.
He understood the machines.
He knew things Vincent didn't.
Vincent nodded.
“Stay close.”
Emily stepped forward.
“Me too.”
Vincent immediately said:
“No.”
“But Ava is my sister.”
“We don't know that.”
Ava interrupted from the screen.
“She is.”
Emily looked at her.
“How?”
Ava smiled.
“Because your mother was pregnant with twins.”
Sofia froze.
Vincent turned.
“Twins?”
Sofia's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know.”
Ava continued:
“They took me first.”
“You were born three minutes later.”
Emily stared.
“Why didn't Mom tell me?”
“Because she believed I was dead.”
Sofia whispered:
“I did.”
Ava looked at her.
“I know.”
Sofia stepped closer to the screen.
“Ava…”
Ava's expression softened.
“Hi, Mom.”
Sofia covered her mouth.
Tears rolled down her face.
“My baby.”
Ava smiled.
“You called me that once.”
“When?”
“The night they took me.”
Sofia closed her eyes.
“I remember.”
The underground chamber shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Vincent looked toward the exit.
“They're coming.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“We need to move.”
Vincent nodded.
Michael grabbed Daniel's hand.
“Stay with me.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Dad?”
Michael stopped.
Daniel smiled.
“I finally know who you are.”
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
“I should have told you.”
“I know.”
Then they ran.
The group entered the hidden tunnel.
The walls were covered with old photographs.
Children.
Doctors.
Scientists.
Men in suits.
Moretti family members.
Vincent stopped.
He recognized several faces.
Judges.
Politicians.
Businessmen.
People who had attended his wedding.
People who had shaken his hand.
People he had trusted.
He stared.
“They were all involved.”
Sofia nodded.
“Yes.”
“How deep does this go?”
“Deeper than the Moretti family.”
Vincent looked at her.
“Who else?”
Sofia whispered:
“Governments.”
Vincent stopped.
“What?”
“They funded parts of the research.”
“Why?”
“To create operatives who couldn't be interrogated.”
Vincent's expression hardened.
“Children.”
“Yes.”
“They were creating spies.”
“Not exactly.”
“What then?”
Sofia looked at Emily.
“People who could remember everything.”
Vincent understood.
Perfect witnesses.
Children who could never forget.
A living archive.
A weapon against anyone who controlled them.
He whispered:
“And Emily?”
“She was the most successful.”
They reached a steel door.
Daniel examined the keypad.
“It's biometric.”
Vincent stepped forward.
“Me?”
“No.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Her.”
Emily stepped closer.
The scanner activated.
PRIMARY HEIR.
The door opened.
Inside was a nursery.
Vincent froze.
Small beds.
Toys.
Drawings.
Names written on the walls.
Emily walked slowly.
She stopped beside one drawing.
A little girl had drawn a family.
Four people.
A father.
A mother.
Two daughters.
Emily touched the paper.
“I drew this.”
Sofia stared.
“You don't remember.”
Emily shook her head.
“I do now.”
Vincent looked at the drawing.
The father had no face.
He remembered something.
The title.
MY DADDY.
Vincent's eyes filled with tears.
“You drew me.”
Emily nodded.
“Even when I didn't remember you.”
Sofia whispered:
“You always remembered him.”
Emily looked at her.
“Mom…”
“Yes?”
“Why did you make me forget?”
Sofia broke down.
“I didn't.”
“Then who did?”
Sofia looked at Vincent.
“I thought it was Bellamy.”
Bellamy's voice came from behind them.
“It wasn't.”
Everyone turned.
Bellamy stood in the doorway.
Bleeding.
Barely standing.
Vincent raised his gun.
“You're alive.”
Bellamy smiled.
“Barely.”
“Who erased Emily's memory?”
Bellamy looked at Sofia.
Then at Vincent.
“Your father.”
Vincent froze.
“Alexander?”
Bellamy nodded.
“He made the choice.”
Alexander appeared behind him.
His face was devastated.
Vincent turned.
“Why?”
Alexander couldn't look at him.
“Because Emily remembered where the bodies were buried.”
Silence.
“What bodies?”
Alexander whispered:
“The twenty-six children.”
Emily stared.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Alexander closed his eyes.
“Under the original Moretti estate.”
Emily stepped back.
Vincent caught her.
“Why would you erase her memory?”
Alexander's voice broke.
“Because if she remembered…”
He looked at Emily.
“…they would have killed her.”
Vincent's eyes filled with anger.
“You didn't protect her.”
“I tried.”
“You stole her memories.”
“I saved her life.”
“You made her believe I was a stranger.”
Alexander looked at Vincent.
“I know.”
Vincent stepped toward him.
“I spent three years believing my wife abandoned me.”
Alexander said nothing.
“I lost my daughter.”
“I know.”
“I lost myself.”
“I know.”
Vincent stopped inches away.
“You don't get to call that protection.”
Alexander lowered his head.
“No.”
Then he whispered:
“It was cowardice.”
Suddenly, every screen in the nursery turned on.
Elena Vale appeared.
She looked directly at Emily.
“Come home.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
Elena smiled.
“You don't belong with them.”
Emily looked at Vincent.
“Yes, I do.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“You were created for something greater.”
Emily stepped forward.
“I wasn't created.”
“I was born.”
Elena stared.
Emily continued:
“And I choose my family.”
Vincent looked at his daughter.
Pride filled his eyes.
Elena laughed.
“Then your family will die with you.”
The screens went black.
A countdown appeared.
00:10:00
Daniel stared.
“What is that?”
Bellamy's face changed.
“Self-destruct.”
Vincent looked around.
“How do we stop it?”
Daniel shook his head.
“We can't.”
“Then we leave.”
Daniel pointed toward the children on the screens.
“What about them?”
Vincent looked at the sleeping children.
“We take them.”
Bellamy nodded.
“There is another exit.”
“Where?”
“Below the laboratory.”
Vincent turned to Sofia.
“Can you get Ava?”
Sofia nodded.
“I'll find her.”
Vincent grabbed her hand.
“Don't leave me again.”
She looked into his eyes.
“I won't.”
They separated.
Vincent, Michael, Daniel, Emily, Alexander, and Bellamy moved toward the lower passage.
Sofia ran in the opposite direction.
Inside the laboratory, Ava was fighting.
Not physically.
Mentally.
The machine around her was flashing.
She placed her hand against the glass.
“I know you're there.”
A technician stepped forward.
“Subject Zero, please remain calm.”
Ava smiled.
“You still call me that.”
“It's your designation.”
“My name is Ava.”
“Yes.”
“Ava Bellamy.”
The technician hesitated.
“Yes.”
Ava smiled.
“Then remember it.”
The glass chamber opened.
Ava stepped out.
The alarms grew louder.
She walked past the guards.
They raised their weapons.
Ava looked at them.
“Do you remember what you did?”
One guard froze.
Another lowered his gun.
Ava whispered:
“You were there.”
The guard's hands began shaking.
“I…”
“You watched them take the children.”
He lowered his weapon.
“I was ordered.”
Ava nodded.
“Everyone was.”
Then she walked past.
Sofia found her.
For a moment, mother and daughter simply stared.
Ava whispered:
“Mom.”
Sofia ran toward her.
They embraced.
Sofia cried into her daughter's hair.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I know.”
“I searched.”
“I know.”
“I never stopped.”
Ava closed her eyes.
“I know.”
Sofia held her tighter.
“I'm sorry.”
Ava whispered:
“You were protecting Emily.”
“I should have protected you too.”
“You were only one person.”
Sofia pulled back.
“You're my daughter.”
Ava smiled.
“So is she.”
Sofia nodded.
“Yes.”
Then the building shook.
Ava looked around.
“We have to go.”
The countdown reached five minutes.
Vincent reached the underground prison.
Six children were inside.
He opened the first cell.
“Come on.”
The child didn't move.
Vincent crouched.
“We're taking you home.”
The boy looked at him.
“Where is home?”
Vincent's throat tightened.
“Somewhere safe.”
Daniel opened another cell.
Michael carried a sleeping girl.
Emily held another child's hand.
One by one, they moved.
Then the lights went out.
A gunshot rang through the darkness.
Bellamy fell.
Sofia screamed.
Vincent turned.
A shadow stood at the end of the corridor.
Margaret.
Alive.
Holding a gun.
“You really thought you could end this?”
Vincent raised his weapon.
Margaret smiled.
“Don't.”
She pointed at Emily.
“Because if you shoot me…”
She pressed a button.
The entire building began shaking.
“The children die.”
Vincent froze.
Margaret laughed.
“I told you.”
She looked at Emily.
“She is the key.”
Emily stepped forward.
“No.”
Vincent grabbed her arm.
“Stay behind me.”
Emily shook her head.
“I can stop her.”
“How?”
Emily looked at Daniel.
“Because I remember.”
Daniel understood.
“The control room.”
Emily nodded.
Margaret's smile disappeared.
“No.”
Emily stepped forward.
“I know where it is.”
Margaret raised her gun.
“Don't.”
Emily continued.
“I know the code.”
Margaret fired.
Vincent pushed Emily aside.
The bullet struck his shoulder.
He fell.
“Dad!”
Sofia screamed.
Margaret ran.
Emily stared at her father.
Then at the fleeing woman.
Something changed inside her.
She stopped crying.
She stood.
And for the first time, she looked exactly like Ava.
Cold.
Focused.
Certain.
She turned toward Daniel.
“Take them out.”
“What?”
“I'll stop her.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Emily smiled.
“Trust me.”
Then she ran into the darkness.
Behind her, Vincent struggled to stand.
Sofia grabbed him.
“Are you okay?”
“I'm fine.”
“You were shot.”
“I've had worse.”
He looked after Emily.
“Where is she going?”
Sofia whispered:
“To finish what I started.”
Emily reached the control room.
Margaret was already there.
She slammed her hand onto the console.
“Stop!”
Emily walked inside.
“You can't stop it.”
Margaret turned.
“You think you can defeat me?”
“No.”
Emily shook her head.
“I think you already lost.”
Margaret laughed.
“You're a child.”
Emily looked at the screens.
“Maybe.”
Then she placed her hand on the scanner.
The system activated.
PRIMARY HEIR IDENTIFIED.
Margaret's smile disappeared.
Emily looked at her.
“You created me.”
“Yes.”
“You hurt my family.”
“Yes.”
“You took my sister.”
“Yes.”
“You killed children.”
Margaret's face remained cold.
“I sacrificed them for progress.”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“But you forgot something.”
“What?”
Emily smiled.
“I remember.”
The entire system flashed.
Files began uploading.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Photographs.
Videos.
Every secret.
Every crime.
Every person involved.
Margaret stared in horror.
“What are you doing?”
“Sharing it.”
“No!”
Emily pressed one final button.
Every file was transmitted.
To police.
To journalists.
To courts.
To thousands of people around the world.
Margaret screamed.
“You'll destroy your own family!”
Emily looked at her.
“My family survived you.”
The system announced:
ARCHIVE RELEASED.
Margaret raised her gun.
Before she could fire—
Ava appeared behind her.
She knocked the weapon away.
Sofia entered.
Then Vincent.
Blood soaked his shirt.
He looked at Emily.
“You okay?”
Emily nodded.
“I remembered.”
Vincent smiled.
“Good.”
Then the building shook violently.
Ava looked at the ceiling.
“We need to go.”
They ran.
Behind them, the laboratory collapsed.
The secret Moretti facility disappeared beneath tons of concrete.
But the truth had already escaped.
Hours later, dawn broke over the Hudson.
Police surrounded the Moretti estate.
News helicopters filled the sky.
Federal agents arrested dozens of people.
Judges resigned.
Businessmen disappeared.
Companies collapsed.
The Moretti empire was no longer a secret.
But Vincent didn't care.
He sat on the steps outside the mansion.
Emily slept against his shoulder.
Daniel sat beside Michael.
Sofia stood nearby with Ava.
For the first time in years, nobody was hiding.
Vincent looked at his family.
Then he looked at the ledger.
He opened it.
The final page contained one sentence.
POWER DOES NOT BELONG TO THE ONE WHO CONTROLS THE BLOODLINE.
Below it was another.
IT BELONGS TO THE ONE WHO BREAKS THE CYCLE.
Vincent closed the book.
Sofia sat beside him.
“What now?”
Vincent looked at her.
“We rebuild.”
“With what?”
“Nothing.”
She smiled.
“Nothing?”
He nodded.
“No empire.”
“No secrets.”
“No lies.”
“Just us.”
Emily stirred.
She opened her eyes.
“Dad?”
Vincent looked down.
“I'm here.”
“Are we safe?”
He looked at Sofia.
Then at Ava.
Then Daniel.
Then the rising sun.
“For the first time…”
He kissed Emily's forehead.
“…yes.”
But before anyone could answer, Bellamy approached.
His face was pale.
His arm was bandaged.
He held a small envelope.
“Vincent.”
Vincent looked up.
“What?”
Bellamy handed him the envelope.
“This was found beneath the laboratory.”
Vincent opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A woman.
A baby.
And a date.
Twenty years earlier.
On the back, someone had written:
SUBJECT ZERO WAS NEVER AVA.
Vincent stared.
His blood ran cold.
He looked toward Ava.
She noticed.
“What is it?”
Vincent couldn't answer.
Sofia took the photograph.
Her face changed.
“No.”
Ava stepped closer.
“What?”
Sofia whispered:
“That's not Ava.”
Vincent looked at her.
“Then who is the baby?”
Sofia stared at the photograph.
Then at Emily.
And finally at Daniel.
Her voice trembled.
“The first child wasn't born to us.”
Vincent's heart sank.
“Then who was she?”
Sofia slowly turned the photograph over.
A second name was written beneath the first.
SUBJECT ZERO — ELENA VALE.
Vincent looked toward the destroyed laboratory.
Then he realized the truth.
Dr. Elena Vale hadn't created the program.
She had been the first child.
And if that was true…
then the woman who had spent twenty years controlling everyone—
wasn't the mastermind.
She was the experiment that had survived.
And somewhere beyond the Hudson Valley, Elena Vale was still alive.
Watching the news.
Smiling.
Because she had just seen Emily release the archive.
And she knew exactly what would happen next.
The entire world would come looking for her.
But Elena wasn't afraid.
She opened a drawer.
Inside was another photograph.
Three newborn babies.
Ava.
Emily.
And a third child.
Elena touched the third photograph.
Then whispered:
May you like
“Now they'll finally meet their brother.”
The screen went black.
