CHAPTER 11 — THE NAME HIDDEN IN THE LEDGER

For several seconds after Bellamy spoke, nobody moved.

The vault was silent except for the low hum of machinery behind the walls.

Vincent stared at him.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Evelyn.

Finally, he looked toward the steel door where Sofia had disappeared.

“My real father?”

Bellamy smiled.

“You heard me.”

Vincent's expression hardened.

“I know who my father is.”

Bellamy shook his head.

“No.”

He tapped the side of his head.

“You know the man who raised you.”

Vincent took one step forward.

“Where is Sofia?”

Bellamy ignored the question.

“That's always been your problem, Vincent.”

“What?”

“You ask the wrong question.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

Bellamy continued.

“You've spent three years asking who took your wife.”

“You should have asked why she was taken.”

“You've spent eight years asking who wanted your daughter dead.”

“You should have asked why Emily was born.”

“And now…”

Bellamy glanced toward Daniel.

“…you're asking who your father is.”

Vincent's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Tell me.”

Bellamy smiled.

“Open the ledger.”

Vincent looked at the enormous steel vault behind him.

“The ledger is locked.”

“Not for you.”

“Why?”

“Because your blood is the final key.”

Vincent stared at him.

“I'm not opening anything.”

Bellamy looked toward Daniel.

“Then the boy dies.”

Vincent's face changed.

Daniel remained remarkably still.

He looked at Vincent.

“Don't.”

Vincent frowned.

“Daniel?”

“Don't open it.”

Bellamy pressed the blade slightly closer to Daniel's neck.

Vincent's hand curled into a fist.

“Put the knife down.”

“No.”

“Bellamy.”

“You've spent your entire life protecting people.”

Bellamy's eyes narrowed.

“That's why you were chosen.”

“Chosen for what?”

“To be the witness.”

Vincent froze.

The word struck him.

Witness.

The same word Sofia had used.

The same word Michael had used.

The same word appearing in the files.

Bellamy smiled.

“You finally understand.”

“No.”

Vincent shook his head.

“You're lying.”

“Am I?”

Bellamy nodded toward the vault.

“Open it.”

Vincent looked at the steel door.

A circular mechanism sat in its center.

Five symbols surrounded it.

A fingerprint reader.

A blood reader.

A retinal scanner.

A voice recognition panel.

And something else.

A small indentation shaped like a key.

Vincent had never seen anything like it.

“What does it need?”

Bellamy answered:

“You.”

Sofia woke on a cold concrete floor.

Her wrists were tied behind her.

Her head throbbed.

She opened her eyes.

A single light hung above her.

Someone sat across the room.

Isabella.

Sofia stared.

“Isabella?”

Isabella looked up.

“You're awake.”

Sofia tried to move.

“Where are we?”

“Below the east wing.”

“Bellamy?”

“Not here.”

“Vincent?”

“He's in the vault.”

Sofia's face changed.

“With Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Emily?”

Isabella hesitated.

Sofia's heart sank.

“What?”

“She was moved.”

“Where?”

“We don't know.”

Sofia struggled against the restraints.

“We have to find her.”

“I know.”

“Then untie me.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Isabella looked down.

“Because I'm tied too.”

Sofia stared at her.

For the first time, she noticed the rope around Isabella's wrists.

“You were captured.”

“Yes.”

“By Bellamy?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Isabella looked toward the ceiling.

“I don't know.”

Sofia's expression hardened.

“You always know.”

“Not this time.”

Isabella leaned closer.

“Before they took me, I saw something.”

“What?”

“A woman.”

“Who?”

“I thought it was Evelyn.”

Sofia's face changed.

“It wasn't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Evelyn has a scar on her left hand.”

Isabella stared.

“This woman didn't.”

Sofia whispered:

“Then who?”

Isabella shook her head.

“She looked exactly like her.”

Silence.

Sofia closed her eyes.

“There's another person.”

“What?”

“Another woman who can move through this family without anyone questioning her.”

Isabella frowned.

“Who?”

Sofia answered:

“Victoria Moretti.”

Isabella's face went pale.

“Your aunt?”

Sofia nodded.

“She's been dead for twenty years.”

“No.”

Sofia opened her eyes.

“She disappeared.”

“That's different.”

“Not in this family.”

Vincent placed his palm against the scanner.

A red light passed across his skin.

Nothing happened.

Bellamy frowned.

“Again.”

Vincent didn't move.

“You said my blood was the key.”

“It is.”

“Then why isn't it opening?”

Bellamy looked toward Evelyn.

She stepped forward.

“Because you're missing something.”

“What?”

“Memory.”

Vincent stared at her.

Evelyn reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small vial.

Inside was a clear liquid.

Vincent's face tightened.

“What is that?”

“The compound they used on you.”

He stared.

“The memory drug.”

“Yes.”

“You kept it?”

“No.”

Evelyn looked toward Bellamy.

“He did.”

Bellamy's smile disappeared.

Vincent looked at him.

“You poisoned me.”

Bellamy said nothing.

“You altered my memories.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you remembered too much.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“Tell me what I remembered.”

Bellamy looked at the vault.

“You remembered who your father really was.”

Vincent's jaw tightened.

“Tell me.”

Bellamy shook his head.

“Open the ledger.”

Vincent stared at him.

Then he turned toward the scanner again.

This time he pressed his hand down.

The machine beeped.

A voice spoke.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

Everyone froze.

The second scanner activated.

VOICE REQUIRED.

Vincent looked at Bellamy.

“What do I say?”

Bellamy smiled.

“You know.”

Vincent shook his head.

“No.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You do.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

A memory surfaced.

A hospital room.

Sofia beside him.

A newborn crying.

His own voice.

“If I ever forget…”

He opened his eyes.

“…make sure my daughter remembers.”

The scanner waited.

Vincent whispered:

“Remember.”

The machine beeped.

VOICE CONFIRMED.

The third scanner activated.

RETINAL IDENTIFICATION.

Vincent looked into the lens.

Another beep.

CONFIRMED.

Then the final panel lit up.

KEY REQUIRED.

Vincent frowned.

Bellamy smiled.

“You don't have it.”

“Then why bring me here?”

“Because Emily does.”

Vincent's face changed.

“Where is she?”

Bellamy looked at Daniel.

“Ask him.”

Vincent turned.

Daniel's expression was unreadable.

“What does Emily have?”

Daniel whispered:

“Mom gave it to her.”

“What?”

“The key.”

Vincent stared.

“When?”

“Before we were separated.”

“What does it look like?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Bellamy laughed.

“You see?”

He leaned closer.

“The little girl has been carrying the final key this entire time.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you let her keep it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she doesn't know what she has.”

Vincent's expression hardened.

“You're afraid of her.”

Bellamy smiled.

“Very.”

Emily sat inside a dark room.

She could hear voices outside.

She was alone.

Again.

She reached into her sweater.

Her fingers touched something cold.

A small metal object.

She pulled it out.

A key.

Not a normal key.

It was shaped like a tiny silver tree.

Three branches.

Eleven leaves.

Emily remembered Sofia giving it to her.

Not recently.

Years ago.

She had been five.

They had been sitting on the laundry-room floor.

Sofia had whispered:

“If you ever feel scared…”

She had placed the object in Emily's palm.

“…hold this.”

Emily had asked:

“What is it?”

Sofia smiled.

“A reminder.”

“Of what?”

“That your family is bigger than you think.”

Emily looked at the key.

She had carried it for three years.

She never understood why.

Now she did.

Footsteps approached.

The door opened.

A woman entered.

Emily stared.

She had Evelyn's face.

But something was wrong.

The eyes.

Too cold.

Too familiar.

Emily stepped backward.

“Who are you?”

The woman smiled.

“I'm your grandmother.”

Emily frowned.

“My grandmother is dead.”

The woman laughed softly.

“Which one?”

Emily's heart stopped.

“Which one?”

The woman closed the door.

“Your father's mother.”

Emily whispered:

“Evelyn.”

“No.”

The woman shook her head.

“Evelyn was your father's stepmother.”

Emily stared.

“Then who are you?”

The woman smiled.

“Victoria.”

Emily's blood ran cold.

“Victoria Moretti.”

“Yes.”

“You're dead.”

“That's what they wanted everyone to believe.”

Emily looked at the door.

“Where is my brother?”

“Safe.”

“My mother?”

“Alive.”

“My dad?”

Victoria smiled.

“Exactly where I need him.”

Emily tightened her grip around the silver key.

“What do you want?”

Victoria looked at the object in Emily's hand.

“That.”

Emily immediately hid it.

Victoria's expression changed.

“You know what that is?”

Emily nodded.

“My mom gave it to me.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“Your mother didn't make it.”

“What?”

“She found it.”

“Found what?”

“The key.”

Emily stared.

“Where?”

Victoria smiled.

“Inside your father's body.”

Emily's face went blank.

“What?”

Victoria continued:

“Eight years ago, when Vincent was shot, the bullet wasn't only designed to damage his memory.”

“It carried something.”

“A microfilm capsule.”

“Your father swallowed it.”

Emily looked horrified.

“Why?”

“Because he knew they were coming.”

“Who?”

Victoria leaned closer.

“Everyone.”

In the vault, Vincent stared at the final panel.

Bellamy's voice was quiet.

“You have five minutes.”

“For what?”

“The system is counting down.”

Vincent looked at the screen.

04:57

“Why?”

“Because the vault locks permanently after five minutes.”

“And then?”

“Everyone inside dies.”

Vincent looked at Daniel.

Bellamy smiled.

“Your daughter has the key.”

Vincent's expression changed.

“You don't have her.”

Bellamy looked amused.

“Don't I?”

A screen activated.

Emily appeared.

Vincent's heart stopped.

“Emily.”

She looked frightened.

But alive.

Vincent stepped toward the screen.

“Emily!”

She looked directly into the camera.

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I'm coming for you.”

Bellamy laughed.

Emily looked at him.

Then at the camera.

“Dad…”

Vincent waited.

She lifted her hand.

The silver key was visible.

“I still have it.”

Vincent's eyes widened.

“Emily, listen to me.”

Victoria appeared behind her.

Vincent froze.

He recognized her from old photographs.

His grandfather's sister.

His father's aunt.

A woman who had supposedly died twenty years earlier.

“Victoria.”

She smiled.

“Hello, Vincent.”

“What do you want?”

“Your family back.”

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

“I protected her.”

“You've lost the right to use that word.”

Victoria's smile faded.

“You have no idea what protection costs.”

Vincent looked at Emily.

“Let her go.”

Victoria shook her head.

“Not until the ledger is opened.”

“You need the key.”

“Yes.”

“Then take it.”

Emily looked at Vincent.

He shook his head almost imperceptibly.

Don't.

Emily understood.

She lowered the key.

Victoria didn't notice.

Vincent looked toward Daniel.

Daniel was watching the screens.

Then he whispered:

“Dad.”

Vincent looked at him.

Daniel pointed toward the ceiling.

A tiny red light blinked.

“Camera.”

Vincent understood.

He stepped toward the camera.

“Bellamy.”

“What?”

“You said the vault requires me.”

“Yes.”

“But it doesn't.”

Bellamy frowned.

Vincent smiled.

“It requires a witness.”

Bellamy's expression changed.

Vincent turned toward Daniel.

“Come here.”

Daniel hesitated.

Then stepped forward.

Bellamy grabbed him.

Vincent said:

“Read the inscription.”

Daniel looked at the panel.

There were tiny words beneath the scanner.

He read them aloud.

“Blood opens.”

He continued.

“Memory confirms.”

Then:

“Witness unlocks.”

Bellamy froze.

Vincent looked at him.

“You never needed me.”

“You needed Daniel.”

Bellamy's face went pale.

Vincent smiled.

“And that's why you were terrified when he remembered.”

Bellamy raised his gun.

“Don't move.”

Vincent didn't.

Daniel stared at the panel.

Then he said:

“I know the code.”

Bellamy looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel whispered:

“My mother taught me.”

“What code?”

Daniel stepped toward the scanner.

He placed his palm against it.

The system beeped.

WITNESS IDENTIFIED.

The vault door began to open.

Bellamy fired.

Vincent moved.

The bullet struck the wall.

Daniel dropped.

Vincent tackled Bellamy.

The gun slid across the floor.

They crashed into a steel cabinet.

Bellamy punched Vincent.

Vincent struck back.

Years of controlled anger exploded.

Bellamy shouted:

“You don't understand!”

Vincent slammed him against the wall.

“Then explain!”

“You were never supposed to remember!”

“Why?”

“Because your father wasn't Richard!”

Vincent froze.

Bellamy's eyes widened.

“The man you buried…”

He laughed bitterly.

“…wasn't your father.”

Vincent's grip loosened.

Bellamy whispered:

“Your real father is inside this vault.”

The steel door opened completely.

Inside stood an old man.

Alive.

Scarred.

Weak.

Vincent stared.

The man looked at him.

Then spoke.

“Son.”

Vincent's blood froze.

The voice.

He remembered it.

Not from twelve years ago.

From childhood.

From dreams.

From the memories they had tried to erase.

The man stepped forward.

“I've been waiting for you.”

Vincent whispered:

“Who are you?”

The man smiled sadly.

“My name is Alexander Moretti.”

Bellamy backed away.

Daniel stared.

The man continued:

“And Richard Moretti…”

He paused.

“…was my brother.”

Vincent's entire world shifted.

Alexander looked toward Daniel.

Then Emily's image on the screen.

“Your children are the last two keys.”

Vincent stared at him.

“Keys to what?”

Alexander's expression became grave.

“To the original Moretti inheritance.”

“And what is it?”

Alexander looked at the ledger.

“The truth about who really owns this family.”

Then the vault alarms began screaming.

The timer dropped.

00:59

Alexander looked at Vincent.

“There's no time.”

“For what?”

“To choose.”

Vincent looked at Daniel.

Then at Emily.

Alexander whispered:

“Because the ledger contains one name that will destroy everything.”

Vincent's face hardened.

“Whose?”

Alexander looked directly at him.

“Yours.”

The timer continued.

00:41

Outside the vault, footsteps approached.

Dozens of them.

Bellamy smiled.

“They're here.”

Vincent turned.

“Who?”

Bellamy answered:

“The people your family has been protecting for generations.”

The doors began closing.

Alexander grabbed Vincent's arm.

“Whatever happens…”

Vincent looked at him.

“Don't let them separate the children.”

Then the vault door slammed shut.

Darkness.

And somewhere inside the locked chamber—

the first page of the original ledger opened by itself.

Across the top was a single sentence:

THE MORETTI BLOODLINE BEGINS WITH A WOMAN.

May you like

Underneath it was a name.

SOFIA MORETTI.
