CHAPTER 12 — THE WOMAN WHO OWNED THE EMPIRE

The name on the first page seemed to burn beneath the vault light.

SOFIA MORETTI.

Vincent stared at it.

For several seconds, he couldn't process what he was seeing.

His wife.

The woman who had supposedly married into the Moretti family.

The woman everyone believed had become a Moretti through Vincent.

The woman who had spent three years hiding from the family.

Her name was written at the beginning of the original ledger.

Not at the end.

Not among the beneficiaries.

At the beginning.

As though everything had started with her.

Vincent slowly looked at Alexander.

“What does that mean?”

Alexander's expression was exhausted.

“It means the story you were told about your family was wrong.”

Vincent pointed toward the page.

“Sofia wasn't born a Moretti.”

“No.”

“Then why is her name here?”

“Because her bloodline predates ours.”

Vincent stared.

“That isn't possible.”

Alexander gave a bitter smile.

“Your grandfather spent decades making sure you would believe it wasn't.”

Daniel stood near the vault door.

“Dad.”

Vincent turned.

Daniel pointed at the ledger.

“There are numbers.”

Vincent looked.

Beside Sofia's name was a sequence.

01 — PRIMARY LINE.

Below it:

02 — SECONDARY LINE.

03 — PROTECTED LINE.

And beneath them were eight more designations.

Eleven total.

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“She's the first.”

Alexander nodded.

“The original heir.”

“Then why did she marry me?”

“Because she needed protection.”

Vincent's jaw tightened.

“From whom?”

Alexander looked toward the sealed door.

“Your family.”

The alarm continued screaming.

00:27

Twenty-seven seconds.

Bellamy stood against the wall.

For the first time since Vincent had known him, the lawyer looked genuinely afraid.

Vincent noticed.

“You're scared.”

Bellamy said nothing.

“Why?”

Bellamy looked at the ledger.

“Because you're not supposed to have opened it.”

Alexander turned toward him.

“Neither are you.”

Bellamy's eyes narrowed.

“You've been hiding for twelve years.”

“I had to.”

“You should have stayed dead.”

Alexander smiled.

“You first.”

Vincent stepped between them.

“Enough.”

He pointed at Bellamy.

“Tell me everything.”

Bellamy laughed.

“You think I'm going to confess?”

“No.”

Vincent looked at the ledger.

“I think the ledger will do it for you.”

The timer reached twenty seconds.

Alexander moved toward the control panel.

“We have to shut down the sequence.”

Vincent looked at him.

“What happens at zero?”

“The vault floods.”

“With what?”

“Gas.”

Vincent's eyes hardened.

“Then stop it.”

Alexander shook his head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because the system recognizes only the original heir.”

Vincent looked at Daniel.

“Then Daniel can stop it.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he is a witness.”

Vincent looked at the ledger.

“Then who?”

Alexander's eyes shifted toward the monitor showing Emily.

“Sofia.”

Vincent froze.

“She isn't here.”

“She doesn't have to be.”

Alexander pointed to the screen.

“She's connected to the system.”

“How?”

“Your grandfather designed it that way.”

Vincent stared.

The timer reached ten seconds.

Alexander grabbed Vincent's shoulder.

“Say her name.”

“What?”

“Say her name.”

Vincent looked confused.

“Why?”

“Because the system needs to recognize the heir.”

Vincent looked at the camera.

Then said:

“Sofia Moretti.”

Nothing.

6

Alexander shouted:

“Again!”

“Sofia Moretti!”

The screen flickered.

IDENTITY SEARCHING.

4

Vincent shouted:

“Sofia!”

The system beeped.

PRIMARY HEIR IDENTIFIED.

The timer stopped.

00:03

Silence.

The alarm died.

Vincent exhaled.

Then the vault doors opened.

And Sofia stood on the other side.

Vincent stared at her.

“How?”

She looked at Alexander.

Then at the ledger.

“I told you.”

Vincent stepped toward her.

“You knew.”

Sofia nodded.

“I knew part of it.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wasn't sure who I could trust.”

Vincent looked at Bellamy.

“You trusted him?”

“No.”

She looked at Isabella, who had just appeared behind Sofia.

“I trusted her.”

Isabella entered the vault.

Vincent stared.

“How did you get out?”

Isabella gave a tired smile.

“I had help.”

A shadow moved behind her.

Evelyn.

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“You.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I owe you an explanation.”

“You owe me several.”

“Yes.”

She stepped forward.

“The first is about your father.”

Vincent turned toward Alexander.

“My father?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Alexander is your biological father.”

Vincent stared.

The room went silent.

Alexander looked down.

“I never wanted you to know this way.”

Vincent's face hardened.

“Why?”

“Because Richard would have killed you.”

“You let me believe he was my father.”

“Yes.”

“You let me call him Dad.”

Alexander's eyes filled with regret.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Vincent shook his head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

He looked around the vault.

“Everyone claims they were protecting me.”

“Everyone lied.”

Sofia stepped closer.

“Vincent…”

He looked at her.

“You lied too.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“Now you deserve the truth.”

Sofia walked to the ledger.

She touched the first page.

“I wasn't born Sofia Moretti.”

Vincent waited.

“My birth name was Sofia Bellamy.”

Bellamy's face changed.

Vincent looked at him.

“You're related?”

Bellamy laughed bitterly.

“She was my sister.”

Vincent stared.

“What?”

Sofia looked at Bellamy.

“He was thirteen when our parents died.”

“I was eight.”

“He raised me.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“Then why did he help them?”

Sofia looked away.

“Because they threatened him.”

Bellamy's voice cracked.

“They had our mother.”

“She was already dead,” Sofia said.

“I know.”

“You believed she was alive.”

“I know.”

“They used you.”

Bellamy stared at her.

“I thought I was saving you.”

“You helped destroy my life.”

“I know.”

Silence.

Sofia looked toward Vincent.

“That was why I couldn't tell you.”

“Because Bellamy was your brother.”

“Because Bellamy was trapped.”

Vincent looked at Bellamy.

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

Bellamy lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You threatened Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“You worked for Richard.”

“Yes.”

“You helped erase my memories.”

“Yes.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“And you expect forgiveness?”

“No.”

Bellamy looked at him.

“I expect consequences.”

Vincent stared at him.

That answer surprised him.

Bellamy continued:

“I spent twenty years believing obedience was the same thing as loyalty.”

He looked at Sofia.

“I was wrong.”

Suddenly, the vault door slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

The security system activated again.

A voice came through the speakers.

“Touching.”

Vincent recognized it.

Richard.

The monitor came alive.

Richard stood inside the cemetery mausoleum.

Beside him was Emily.

Vincent's heart stopped.

“Emily.”

She was alive.

But she looked frightened.

Richard held a gun near her.

“You have the ledger.”

Vincent stepped toward the screen.

“Let her go.”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

“Take me instead.”

“I don't want you.”

Vincent froze.

“I want the book.”

“You'll get it.”

“Not the copy.”

Richard leaned closer to the camera.

“The original.”

Vincent looked at Alexander.

“What does he mean?”

Alexander's face changed.

“He knows.”

“Knows what?”

“The ledger you're holding isn't complete.”

Vincent looked down.

He turned the pages.

The final section was blank.

“Where is the rest?”

Alexander answered:

“Emily.”

Vincent stared.

“What?”

“The final pages were never stored in the vault.”

“Where?”

“Inside the heir.”

Vincent's face went pale.

“Inside Emily?”

“No.”

Alexander looked at Sofia.

“Inside the mother's bloodline.”

Sofia understood.

“Me.”

Alexander nodded.

Vincent stared.

“What does that mean?”

Sofia touched her chest.

“My blood contains the encryption.”

Vincent looked at the screen.

Richard smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Vincent stepped toward the monitor.

“You want Sofia.”

“Yes.”

“And Emily.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Because the ledger doesn't just reveal ownership.”

“What else?”

“The truth about the children.”

Vincent looked at Daniel.

Richard continued:

“And once that truth becomes public…”

He paused.

“Every government agency involved will collapse.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“You're protecting them.”

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“I'm protecting myself.”

Outside the vault, footsteps echoed.

Heavy.

Dozens of them.

Vincent looked toward the door.

“How many?”

Evelyn answered:

“Too many.”

Michael appeared beside her.

“We need another exit.”

Alexander nodded.

“There is one.”

“Where?”

“Below the old chapel.”

Vincent looked at Sofia.

“We're leaving.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard wants me.”

“Exactly.”

“And that's why I have to go.”

Vincent stared.

“No.”

“If I don't…”

“He'll kill Emily.”

“He'll kill her anyway if he doesn't get me.”

Vincent grabbed her hand.

“We find another way.”

Sofia looked at him.

“Three years ago, I thought I was protecting Emily.”

She swallowed.

“I was wrong.”

Vincent's eyes softened.

“You did what you had to.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I should have trusted you.”

Vincent said nothing.

Sofia stepped closer.

“I spent three years believing I was saving my daughter from your family.”

“You were.”

“But I forgot something.”

“What?”

“That you are her father.”

Vincent looked at her.

“You're not doing this alone.”

Sofia smiled through tears.

“I know.”

They moved through the underground passage.

Michael led.

Evelyn followed.

Isabella carried the ledger.

Daniel stayed beside Vincent.

Sofia walked behind them.

Bellamy remained in the vault.

Vincent noticed.

“You're coming.”

Bellamy shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because someone has to stay.”

Vincent looked at him.

“What are you planning?”

Bellamy smiled.

“For once?”

He looked toward the approaching footsteps.

“Something useful.”

Vincent understood.

“You're sacrificing yourself.”

Bellamy nodded.

“Maybe.”

Sofia stopped.

“Charles.”

Bellamy looked at her.

“I'm sorry.”

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

Bellamy closed the vault door.

Then he activated every defense system.

Steel shutters slammed down.

Security lights turned red.

The men outside began firing.

Bellamy stood alone.

He picked up a gun.

Then whispered:

“For once…”

He smiled bitterly.

“…let me be the brother you deserved.”

The group reached the old chapel.

Snow blew through the broken roof.

Vincent looked around.

No Richard.

No Emily.

Nothing.

Then a voice came from behind the altar.

“Dad.”

Emily.

Vincent turned.

She ran into his arms.

He held her tightly.

“My baby.”

Emily cried.

“I knew you'd come.”

Vincent kissed her hair.

“Always.”

Sofia embraced them both.

For one brief moment, the family was together.

Then Emily looked at Daniel.

“Where is he?”

Vincent frowned.

“Who?”

“Grandpa.”

Vincent's expression changed.

“Richard?”

Emily nodded.

“He told me something.”

“What?”

“He said…”

She hesitated.

“…he isn't Grandpa.”

Vincent froze.

“What?”

Emily looked toward the darkness.

“He said Grandpa died before I was born.”

Vincent's eyes narrowed.

“Then who is he?”

Emily swallowed.

“I don't know.”

“But he said one thing.”

“What?”

“He said…”

Emily looked at Sofia.

“…Mom knows.”

Everyone turned toward Sofia.

She went pale.

Vincent stared at her.

“Sofia?”

She didn't answer.

“Sofia.”

Finally, she whispered:

“Richard isn't your grandfather.”

“Then who is he?”

Sofia looked toward the snow-covered cemetery.

“The man who calls himself Richard Moretti…”

She swallowed.

“…is actually your grandfather's lawyer.”

Vincent stared.

“Then where is Richard?”

Sofia's eyes filled with fear.

“He died twelve years ago.”

Vincent looked toward the mausoleum.

“Then who is controlling all of this?”

Sofia whispered:

“Your grandmother.”

Margaret stepped from behind the chapel.

Everyone froze.

She smiled.

“I wondered when you'd figure it out.”

Vincent raised his weapon.

“Stay where you are.”

Margaret laughed.

“You still think guns solve family problems.”

“What did you do to Emily?”

“Nothing.”

“What do you want?”

“The ledger.”

“You won't get it.”

Margaret looked at Isabella.

“Give it to me.”

Isabella stepped backward.

“No.”

Margaret sighed.

“Then we'll do this the difficult way.”

She snapped her fingers.

Men emerged from the trees.

Vincent raised his weapon.

Michael did the same.

Evelyn stepped in front of Emily.

Sofia grabbed Daniel.

Margaret smiled.

Then she said something that made Vincent lower his gun.

“Before you shoot…”

She pointed at Emily.

“…ask your wife why your daughter has never been allowed to see a doctor.”

Vincent turned toward Sofia.

“What does that mean?”

Sofia's face went white.

Emily looked confused.

Margaret continued:

“Because Emily isn't simply the heir.”

Vincent stared.

“What is she?”

Margaret smiled.

“She is the only person in the world who can survive the bloodline.”

Vincent's heart stopped.

“Survive what?”

Margaret answered:

“The genetic program your family started twenty years ago.”

Sofia shook her head.

“No.”

Margaret looked at her.

“Yes.”

Vincent turned toward Sofia.

“What is she talking about?”

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“When?”

“After we were safe.”

“Tell me now.”

Sofia looked at Emily.

Then at Vincent.

“The reason Emily was born…”

She struggled to speak.

“…wasn't an accident.”

Vincent stared.

“What do you mean?”

Sofia whispered:

“They created her.”

Silence.

Vincent looked at Emily.

“No.”

Sofia nodded.

“She was part of the program.”

Vincent's face hardened.

“Who created my daughter?”

Sofia's voice broke.

“Your grandfather.”

Margaret smiled.

“And your grandmother.”

Vincent looked at Margaret.

Then at Sofia.

Then at Emily.

Everything he believed about his daughter suddenly became uncertain.

Margaret raised her hand.

“Take the ledger.”

The men moved.

Vincent stepped forward.

“Don't.”

Margaret smiled.

“Why?”

Vincent looked at Emily.

Because Emily was watching him.

Terrified.

But brave.

Vincent raised his weapon.

“Because she's my daughter.”

Margaret laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

Vincent's voice became cold.

“I understand enough.”

Margaret stared at him.

Vincent continued:

“You built the program.”

“You created the trust.”

“You erased our identities.”

“You separated families.”

“You murdered anyone who resisted.”

He stepped forward.

“And you made one mistake.”

Margaret's smile faded.

“What?”

Vincent looked at Emily.

“You thought she belonged to you.”

Emily reached into her sweater.

She pulled out the silver tree-shaped key.

Margaret's face changed.

Vincent smiled.

“She belongs to herself.”

Emily stepped beside him.

Daniel stood on her other side.

Sofia took Vincent's hand.

For the first time, the four of them stood together.

Margaret looked at them.

Then whispered:

“Open the ledger.”

Vincent shook his head.

“No.”

Margaret smiled.

“You'll regret that.”

Vincent replied:

“No.”

He looked toward the chapel.

“You will.”

Then the doors behind Margaret exploded inward.

Police flooded the cemetery.

Sirens filled the night.

Margaret's men dropped their weapons.

Margaret stared in disbelief.

Vincent looked at Isabella.

She smiled.

“I made one call.”

Margaret turned toward her.

“To whom?”

Isabella held up her phone.

“Every journalist in New York.”

Margaret's face went pale.

“And every federal investigator.”

Vincent looked at Sofia.

“You said the ledger would destroy everyone.”

Sofia nodded.

Vincent smiled.

“Then let's destroy it.”

He held up the book.

But before he could open it, a gunshot rang out.

Margaret fell.

Everyone froze.

A man stood on the cemetery wall.

Charles Bellamy.

Bleeding.

Alive.

He lowered his weapon.

“Don't destroy it.”

Vincent stared.

“Why?”

Bellamy looked at Sofia.

“Because the ledger isn't the evidence.”

He looked at Emily.

“She is.”

Emily's face went pale.

Bellamy continued:

“Every secret they buried…”

“Every child they erased…”

“Every crime they committed…”

“It was recorded inside her.”

Vincent stared at his daughter.

“What does that mean?”

Bellamy smiled sadly.

“It means Emily isn't the key to the ledger.”

“She is the ledger.”

And beneath the snow, somewhere under the cemetery—

a hidden machine suddenly activated.

A voice spoke from underground.

PRIMARY HEIR DETECTED.

MEMORY ARCHIVE ACTIVATING.

Emily grabbed her father's hand.

“Dad…”

Vincent looked down.

“What?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I remember.”

Vincent's heart stopped.

“Remember what?”

Emily looked toward the cemetery.

“The night they took me.”

May you like

Then she whispered:

“And I remember who gave the order.”
