Chapter 9 - THE BOARDROOM

The Vale Global board met at eleven.

At eleven-oh-seven, the doors opened.

Adrian walked in.

Every conversation stopped.

Simon stood at the head of the table.

His expression lasted less than half a second.

Shock.

Then concern.

Perfectly performed.

“Adrian.”

Adrian placed his briefcase on the table.

“Simon.”

Board chair Eleanor Shaw removed her glasses.

“We've been trying to reach you.”

“I know.”

Simon stepped forward.

“Thank God you're safe.”

He opened his arms as though greeting an old friend.

Adrian did not move.

Simon lowered them.

“Where have you been?”

“Busy.”

“With?”

“Being kidnapped.”

Several directors shifted.

Simon looked pained.

“Adrian—”

“My driver was assaulted.”

“I'm aware there was an incident.”

“A fake chauffeur arrived at my home.”

“Yes, and given your current state—”

“My current state?”

Simon stopped.

Adrian smiled.

“Go ahead.”

Eleanor intervened.

“This meeting concerns your capacity to resume executive authority.”

“Then let's discuss it.”

A psychiatrist hired by the board presented the fabricated medical documents.

Adrian answered every question calmly.

Dates.

Financial details.

Company metrics.

Recent negotiations.

He missed nothing.

Simon changed tactics.

“Cognitive decline isn't always obvious.”

Adrian nodded.

“Neither is fraud.”

The room went still.

Simon smiled.

“Is that an accusation?”

“Yes.”

“Against whom?”

Adrian looked around the room.

“Nathan Wexler.”

He presented evidence of inflated revenue.

Then shell-company contracts.

Then patent conflicts.

Wexler's representatives protested.

Simon attacked the credibility of the documents.

Adrian let him.

Then Rebecca entered.

She was technically suspended.

Eleanor objected.

Adrian said, “She's here as my personal counsel.”

Rebecca distributed a second file.

Redhaven Capital.

Julian's ownership.

Wexler's investment.

Vale Defense transfer documents.

Directors began whispering.

Simon's face remained controlled.

“You've built a conspiracy from ordinary corporate structures.”

Adrian nodded.

“Perhaps.”

Simon relaxed slightly.

Then Adrian placed Maya's blue notebook on the table.

Simon stared at it.

Just for a second.

But Adrian saw his thumb move.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Adrian opened to the marina drawing.

“Do you recognize yourself?”

Simon looked.

“A child's sketch?”

“Answer.”

“I meet hundreds of executives.”

“Nathan Wexler?”

“No recollection.”

“Julian?”

“No recollection.”

Adrian smiled.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Eleanor noticed too.

“So here's what happens,” Adrian said.

“We suspend the Wexler acquisition immediately.”

Simon shook his head.

“You no longer have authority.”

“The board does.”

Eleanor looked around the table.

One director spoke.

“I vote suspension pending investigation.”

Another followed.

Simon became more aggressive.

“This is exactly what we warned about. Adrian appears, makes extraordinary accusations, produces drawings by a child—”

Adrian waited.

Simon stopped himself.

Too late.

Nobody had said the drawing came from a child.

Only a small circle knew Maya's notebook existed.

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

“How did you know who made the drawing?”

Simon stared at Adrian.

Adrian said quietly, “Interesting.”

For the first time, Simon Hart lost control.

Only for a moment.

But that moment changed the room.

Eleanor suspended the acquisition.

Simon remained acting CEO pending the capacity review.

Not defeated.

But wounded.

After the meeting, Adrian entered the elevator alone.

Before the doors closed, Simon stepped inside.

They descended in silence.

Then Simon smiled.

“You think you won something.”

“No.”

“Good.”

Simon adjusted his cuff.

“You've always been slow about people.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Evan Marlow.”

Simon's smile vanished.

Adrian continued.

“I know.”

The elevator stopped.

Simon leaned closer.

“No, Adrian.”

His voice was almost gentle.

“You know what Celeste wants you to know.”

The doors opened.

Simon walked out.

Then turned.

“If I were you, I'd ask your wife where she was the night her brother died.”

The doors closed.

May you like

Adrian stood alone.

For the first time since learning the truth about Evan, he wondered whether Simon was not the only person Celeste had lied about.
