Chapter 1 - THE VOICE ON THE RECORDING

Adrian pressed PLAY.

For three seconds, there was nothing but wind brushing across the microphone.

Then came the distant metallic click of gardening shears.

A bird chirped somewhere above the greenhouse.

And finally, his wife's voice.

Celeste Vale sounded almost bored.

“He leaves at eight-ten.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

Maya sat beside him behind the limestone planter, watching his face rather than the phone.

Another voice answered Celeste.

Male.

Low.

Controlled.

“He won't make the airport.”

Adrian leaned closer.

Celeste laughed softly.

“He barely looks up from that ridiculous phone. Put the right car in the right place and he'll climb inside by habit.”

The man replied.

“And Daniel?”

“Handled.”

Adrian's eyes moved instantly toward the driveway.

The fake chauffeur was still standing beside the black sedan.

Still waiting.

Still checking his watch.

On the recording, Celeste continued.

“You have ninety minutes. After that, Simon starts making calls.”

The male voice lowered.

“If Mercer resists?”

Mercer.

The word caught Adrian strangely.

It wasn't his surname.

Then he remembered.

Mercer was the internal code name for the emergency succession plan at Vale Global.

Only senior executives knew it existed.

The protocol allowed the board to appoint an interim chief executive if Adrian became incapacitated, disappeared, or could not perform his duties during a material corporate transaction.

Someone had turned his own company's contingency plan against him.

The male voice spoke again.

“The cabin is isolated. No cameras. No neighbors within two miles.”

Celeste responded immediately.

“Good.”

Adrian's jaw hardened.

Then she said something even worse.

“Just don't kill him.”

Maya's fingers tightened around the edge of her jacket.

The man laughed.

“Getting sentimental?”

“No.”

Celeste's voice became colder.

“A dead billionaire creates investigations. A missing billionaire creates uncertainty.”

She paused.

“And uncertainty makes people sell.”

Adrian understood.

Vale Global stock would collapse the moment his disappearance became public.

Someone intended to profit from it.

The conversation continued.

“What about the girl?”

Adrian's head snapped toward Maya.

Maya stared at the phone.

Her face had gone pale.

Celeste sounded confused.

“What girl?”

“The gardener's kid. She was around yesterday.”

There was a pause.

Then Celeste answered.

“She doesn't matter.”

Adrian looked at Maya.

Something changed inside him.

Until that moment, this had been corporate betrayal.

A hostile takeover.

A marriage built on deception.

Now a twelve-year-old child had been placed somewhere inside their calculation.

The man's voice returned.

“Kids notice things.”

Celeste sighed.

“Then make sure she doesn't have anything to notice.”

The recording crackled.

Footsteps moved away.

Maya whispered, “That's where I stopped listening.”

Adrian did not answer.

The fake chauffeur suddenly raised his phone.

He spoke to someone.

Then looked toward the mansion.

“Mr. Vale?”

His voice carried across the circular driveway.

“Sir, we need to leave.”

Adrian stayed hidden.

The man waited another thirty seconds.

Then made another call.

Adrian's phone vibrated.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

He didn't answer.

Seconds later, Celeste appeared at one of the second-floor windows.

She looked down toward the car.

The driver shook his head almost imperceptibly.

Celeste disappeared from the window.

Maya whispered, “She's coming.”

Adrian made a decision.

“Give me your phone.”

She did.

He stopped the recording and slid the device into his inside jacket pocket.

“Do exactly what I tell you.”

Maya nodded.

“Go back toward the rose garden.”

“What about you?”

“Don't run. Don't look frightened. Find your father and stay beside him.”

Maya hesitated.

“They know I was near the greenhouse.”

“They don't know what you heard.”

“They might.”

Adrian looked directly into her eyes.

“Then from this moment forward, you don't leave your father's sight.”

Maya stood.

Adrian caught her wrist gently.

“One more thing.”

She looked back.

“Whatever happens next, don't tell anyone about the recording.”

“Not even Dad?”

“Especially not until I know who's involved.”

Maya swallowed.

Then nodded.

She walked away calmly.

Adrian watched until she disappeared behind the hedges.

Thirty seconds later, Celeste stepped through the mansion's front doors.

She wore an ivory silk blouse and cream trousers.

Perfectly composed.

Perfectly ordinary.

Exactly as she looked most mornings.

“Adrian?”

He stayed behind the planter.

She walked down one step.

“Daniel?”

The fake chauffeur answered.

“He hasn't come out.”

Celeste's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Adrian saw it.

Annoyance.

Not concern.

She immediately pulled out her phone.

Adrian's device vibrated in his pocket.

Her name appeared.

CELESTE.

He let it ring.

She called again.

He didn't answer.

Then the fake chauffeur walked toward the front entrance.

Adrian quietly moved around the opposite side of the planter.

The estate had been designed with service corridors hidden behind landscaping walls so workers could move between gardens without crossing the main drive.

For the first time in fifteen years, Adrian used one himself.

He slipped through the narrow opening beside the hedge and moved toward the west wing.

His expensive shoes sank into wet soil.

His flight was forgotten.

His acquisition was forgotten.

His only priorities now were finding Daniel, understanding how deep the conspiracy reached, and keeping Maya alive.

Halfway down the service path, his phone vibrated again.

This time it was a text.

From Simon Hart.

His chief financial officer.

Where are you? Board is asking.

Adrian stared at it.

Simon.

The same name Celeste had mentioned in the recording.

He typed nothing.

Then another text arrived.

Plane says you haven't arrived. Call me immediately.

Adrian switched the phone to airplane mode.

At the rear service entrance, he found Thomas Brooks loading bags of soil onto a utility cart.

“Mister Vale?”

Thomas immediately straightened.

Adrian raised a finger.

“Keep working.”

Thomas stared at him.

“Sir?”

“Where's Maya?”

“By the roses, I thought.”

“Find her.”

Thomas's expression changed.

“Did something happen?”

Adrian stepped close enough that nobody observing from the mansion could read his lips.

“Take your daughter to the old equipment shed behind the north greenhouse.”

Thomas frowned.

“Why?”

“Because right now I don't know who on this property I can trust.”

Thomas went still.

Adrian continued.

“Except her.”

Then a sound came from inside the service building.

A dull impact.

Both men turned.

Another sound.

Someone hitting a door.

Thomas reached for a shovel.

Adrian shook his head.

“Stay behind me.”

They entered.

The laundry room was empty.

The pantry was empty.

Then they heard the noise again.

It came from the small storage room beneath the servants' staircase.

Adrian tried the handle.

Locked.

Thomas brought a heavy tool from the wall.

Two strikes broke the latch.

The door opened.

A man collapsed forward.

Daniel Reyes.

Adrian's real chauffeur.

His wrists were bound.

A strip of silver tape hung from his neck where someone had torn it from his mouth.

His face was bruised.

But he was conscious.

“Daniel.”

Adrian dropped beside him.

Daniel struggled for breath.

“They took my uniform.”

“I know.”

“They know your route.”

“I know.”

Daniel gripped Adrian's sleeve.

“No.”

His eyes widened.

“You don't understand.”

Adrian leaned closer.

Daniel whispered four words.

“They have someone inside.”

Adrian almost laughed bitterly.

“More than one.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not staff.”

He swallowed painfully.

“Your family.”

Before Adrian could answer, footsteps sounded outside.

Someone was approaching the service building.

Thomas quickly pulled Daniel behind shelving.

Adrian stepped beside the door.

The handle turned.

Celeste entered.

She stopped.

Her husband was standing three feet away.

His suit dirty.

His shoes covered in mud.

His eyes fixed calmly on hers.

For half a second, neither spoke.

Then Adrian smiled.

May you like

“Looking for me?”

And for the first time since he had married her, Celeste Vale looked afraid.
