Chapter 16 - THE CLUE FROM THE FIRST MORNING

Victor Raines refused to talk.

Simon refused too.

Both had lawyers.

Both blamed the other.

Then Adrian remembered the fake driver.

Not his face.

Not the car.

The keys.

Maya's first observation.

Real Daniel kept his keys on the left.

Fake Owen Pike kept his on the right.

Why?

Because Pike was left-handed.

During the Orchard House confrontation, Adrian remembered seeing Pike use the biometric scanner setup.

With his left hand.

Rebecca retrieved evidence photographs from the farmhouse.

A tool case contained fingerprint molds.

Not only Adrian's.

Simon Hart's.

Celeste's.

Julian's.

Victor's.

Pike had been preparing biometric access for multiple identities.

Why Simon's?

Because someone planned to authorize transactions in Simon's name after he was no longer useful.

Adrian requested a meeting with Simon through prosecutors.

“You were next,” Adrian said.

Simon smiled.

“No.”

Adrian slid photographs across the table.

“Pike had your fingerprint mold.”

Simon's expression changed.

Barely.

But there.

Victor had planned to betray Simon.

Or someone above both of them had.

Adrian leaned closer.

“You thought you controlled Victor.”

Simon said nothing.

“He controlled the operation.”

Nothing.

“He kept copies.”

Simon's thumb began scratching his finger.

Adrian noticed.

“He kept evidence on you.”

Scratch.

“He planned to take Redhaven.”

Scratch.

“And when I was gone, Celeste blamed, Julian compromised, you would've been the last person who could connect everything.”

Simon stopped scratching.

Adrian smiled.

“You didn't know.”

For the first time, Simon Hart looked uncertain.

That uncertainty became leverage.

Meanwhile, prosecutors offered Victor a reduced sentence for cooperation on Evan's death and Maya's kidnapping.

Victor rejected it.

Then Simon requested his own deal.

The alliance cracked.

Within forty-eight hours, they were racing to betray each other.

Simon gave investigators evidence that Victor had been paid to stage Evan's fatal crash.

Victor produced messages proving Simon ordered the kidnapping operation and falsified Adrian's medical records.

Both implicated Wexler.

Both implicated Lowell.

Both implicated Julian in financial fraud but not violence.

The case exploded open.

Yet one mystery remained.

Why had Celeste been required as emergency trustee?

Why place control in her name?

Simon finally explained.

“Because everyone would believe the angry wife did it.”

Adrian stared across the interrogation table.

“You knew who she was from the beginning?”

“Yes.”

“You let her marry me.”

Simon smiled.

“I encouraged it.”

Celeste, watching through one-way glass, went still.

Simon had discovered her identity before she ever met Adrian.

Instead of stopping her, he manipulated introductions.

He wanted a resentful Marlow inside the Vale family.

A future scapegoat.

Their marriage had been engineered from both directions.

Celeste left the observation room.

Adrian found her outside.

“Twelve years,” she whispered.

“Celeste.”

“Twelve years and he was in the middle of it before we even met.”

Adrian didn't know what to say.

She looked at him.

“Was any of it ours?”

He answered carefully.

“The lies weren't.”

“And the rest?”

Adrian thought about holidays.

Fights.

Quiet breakfasts.

Her hand in his during heart surgery.

His head in her lap the night his father died.

“No one gets to decide that for us.”

Celeste cried again.

This time Adrian held her.

Not as husband and wife restored.

Not yet.

As two people finally understanding how deeply someone else had occupied their lives.

Then Maya appeared at the end of the hallway with Thomas.

She held an envelope.

“Mr. Vale?”

Adrian wiped his eyes.

“What?”

“This came for me.”

No return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

Maya in the rose garden.

Taken almost a year earlier.

On the back:

SHE WAS WATCHING LONG BEFORE YOU WERE.

Victor and Simon were in custody.

Pike was in custody.

Wexler was under investigation.

So who had been photographing Maya before the conspiracy supposedly began?

There was still someone left.
