CHAPTER 12 — THE WOMAN OF THE HOUSE

Months later, the ballroom was restored.
The same silver chain had been polished.
The same ornate chair stood at the head of the table.
Maribel entered slowly.
She looked at Estelle.
"You should sit there."
Estelle smiled.
"No."
Maribel frowned.
"Why?"
"Because I don't need a chair to prove who I am."
Leandro watched quietly.
Estelle took Maribel's hand.
"Sit with us."
Maribel began to cry.
She had spent twenty-three years believing power meant controlling a room.
Estelle had learned that power could mean refusing to become cruel.
The family gathered.
Daphne stood beside them.
For the first time, there were no whispers.
No insults.
No hidden threats.
Only silence.
A peaceful silence.
Then the doors opened.
A lawyer entered.
"There is one final matter."
Everyone turned.
He placed a sealed envelope on the table.
"It belonged to Alessandro Rossi."
Estelle opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The first sentence read:
If my daughter is reading this, then she survived me.
Estelle's eyes filled with tears.
May you like
The second sentence changed everything.
But there is something she must know about the woman who saved her.
