Chapter 10 — A Home No One Could Steal

One year later...
My Mission Bay condo looked exactly the same.
The windows overlooked the bay.
The sunlight still filled the living room every morning.
But I had changed.
The silence felt peaceful now.
Not lonely.
Emma rebuilt her life.
Maya divorced my brother-in-law and started a nonprofit helping women escape financial and emotional abuse.
Jennifer became one of the state's leading advocates for victims of coercive control.
As for me...
I returned to work.
But I also began speaking publicly about something many people never recognized.
Abuse doesn't always begin with violence.
Sometimes...
It begins with entitlement.
With someone convincing you that what you earned somehow belongs to them.
One afternoon, a young woman approached me after a seminar.
She quietly asked,
"How did you know when it was time to leave?"
I smiled.
