Chapter 7 — The Woman They Erased

The next morning I met Maya in secret.

She looked exhausted.

Like someone who hadn't slept in years.

"I knew you'd watch the files."

She wrapped both hands around her coffee.

"My sister was the woman in that video."

I stared at her.

"What happened?"

Maya looked toward the window.

"Emma worked for the Caldwell family foundation."

"She discovered millions of dollars being moved through fake charities."

"When she threatened to report them..."

"...the lake house burned down."

Everyone believed Emma died in the fire.

Even her parents.

Even the police.

Maya swallowed hard.

"But she escaped."

I frowned.

"Then where is she?"

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

"They locked her away."

The words barely sounded real.

"My sister has spent six years hidden inside a private medical facility owned by one of Adrian's father's companies."

"They declared her mentally unstable."

"They erased her."

The room became silent.

The flash drive wasn't exposing one crime.

It was exposing an entire criminal enterprise.

Money laundering.

Insurance fraud.

Kidnapping.

Attempted murder.

False medical imprisonment.

Everything connected back to the Caldwell family.

And now...

They knew the evidence was missing.
