Chapter 8 - THE BROTHER ETHAN NEVER SUSPECTED

Daniel Whitmore had spent his entire life protecting Ethan.

At least that was how Ethan remembered it.

When Ethan was twelve and broke his arm, Daniel carried him half a mile to the road because their phones were dead.

When their father died, Daniel handled the funeral.

When Ethan started his company, Daniel invested nearly everything he had.

When Claire died, Daniel practically moved into the mansion for three months.

He helped Ethan survive.

Now Claire’s recording accused him of financing the man who caused her death.

Ethan refused to believe it.

Not immediately.

“No.”

Alvarez paused the video.

“Mr. Whitmore—”

“No.”

Ethan stood.

“There has to be another explanation.”

Margaret looked at him sadly.

“I said the same thing about Richard.”

Ethan called Daniel.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Alvarez quietly dispatched officers to his home.

Empty.

His office?

Empty.

Private jet?

Departed Westchester County ninety minutes earlier.

Destination filed as Toronto.

Then diverted.

Transponder switched off.

Ethan sat down.

His brother was running.

The denial collapsed.

Claire’s video continued.

She had discovered Daniel used Whitmore Development subsidiaries to hide Harrington Trust transfers.

Why?

Debt.

Daniel had made disastrous private investments.

Richard discovered them.

Instead of exposing Daniel, Richard recruited him.

Together they moved millions.

Then tens of millions.

Eventually Daniel couldn’t escape.

Claire found the transactions after Sophie was born.

She confronted Daniel.

He begged her to stay quiet.

She refused.

According to Claire, Daniel knew Richard intended to frighten her.

But she wasn’t certain whether Daniel knew Richard planned to sabotage the car.

“Maybe he didn’t,” Ethan whispered.

Alvarez said nothing.

The next portion destroyed that hope.

Claire had secretly recorded a phone call.

Daniel’s voice.

Richard, you said scare her.

Richard answered.

Plans change.

She has a child.

So do you want your brother to lose everything?

Daniel went silent.

Then:

Do whatever you have to do. Just keep Ethan out of it.

Ethan stopped the recording.

He couldn’t continue.

His brother had not ordered Claire’s death directly.

But when given the opportunity to stop Richard—

He chose money.

He chose himself.

And Claire died.

Sophie entered quietly.

Nora tried to stop her.

Ethan wiped his face quickly.

Sophie looked at the frozen image of Claire on the screen.

“Mommy.”

Ethan nodded.

She climbed into his lap.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

Then Sophie asked the question everyone else had been avoiding.

“Why did Uncle Daniel hurt Mommy?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Because children had a brutal ability to reduce adult corruption to its simplest truth.

Why?

Money?

Fear?

Status?

Debt?

None of those explanations mattered to Sophie.

“He made a very bad choice,” Ethan said.

“Can he say sorry?”

Ethan looked at Claire’s face.

“Sometimes sorry can’t fix what someone does.”

Sophie thought about that.

Then rested her head against him.

“I don’t want Uncle Daniel here anymore.”

“Neither do I.”

By evening, federal authorities joined the search.

Daniel’s plane was located in Quebec.

He had abandoned it.

A car registered to a shell company crossed toward a remote border road.

Then disappeared.

Richard remained in custody.

Celeste began cooperating.

Margaret agreed to testify.

And Ethan discovered the final piece of Claire’s message.

The backside of Sophie’s photograph had another layer.

Under ultraviolet light, investigators found faint writing.

Ethan, Daniel will tell you he did it for you.

Do not believe him.

He did it because he could not bear the thought of you becoming more successful than he was.

Ethan stared at the sentence.

May you like

Claire had understood Daniel better than Ethan ever had.

And somewhere beyond the border, Daniel was still running.
