Chapter 10 - THE CABIN

Police told Ethan to stay home.

He did.

The old version of Ethan might have ignored them.

Driven north.

Confronted Daniel personally.

But Sophie had already lost one parent.

Ethan would not gamble with the other because revenge felt satisfying.

Federal agents surrounded the cabin before dawn.

Daniel was inside.

Alone.

He surrendered after forty-three minutes.

No dramatic chase.

No gunfight.

No final escape.

Just a fifty-two-year-old man walking out of a wooden cabin with his hands raised.

Ethan watched the arrest later on recorded footage.

Daniel looked old.

Smaller.

Nothing like the brother Ethan had spent his life admiring.

Three days later, Daniel requested a meeting.

Ethan refused.

Then Daniel offered information about Claire’s crash.

Ethan agreed on one condition.

Alvarez would be present.

Daniel entered the interview room in detention clothing.

He looked at Ethan.

“Little brother.”

Ethan said nothing.

Daniel tried to smile.

It failed.

“I never wanted Claire dead.”

“Then why is she dead?”

“Richard went too far.”

“You kept working with him.”

“I was trapped.”

“You had a phone.”

Daniel looked away.

“You could have called me.”

“I was protecting you.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“Claire said you would say that.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?”

“She knew.”

Ethan leaned forward.

“She knew exactly what you were going to say.”

Daniel’s mouth tightened.

“You always thought she was smarter than everyone.”

“She was smarter than you.”

That landed.

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

For one second, Ethan saw the jealousy Claire had described.

There it was.

Not brotherly protection.

Competition.

“Was that it?”

Ethan asked.

“What?”

“You couldn’t stand that I was successful?”

Daniel scoffed.

“I built the company.”

“With me.”

“You got the credit.”

“You were president.”

“You were the face.”

Ethan stared.

Claire had been right.

Daniel’s resentment had been growing quietly for years.

Richard did not create it.

He used it.

“What did Richard promise you?”

“Control.”

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Once the Harrington assets were folded into Whitmore Development, we would have become one of the largest private property groups on the East Coast.”

“So Claire had to disappear.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“She only needed to stop asking questions.”

“She didn’t.”

“No.”

“So you let Richard stop her.”

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t know about the brakes.”

“Did you know he was going to confront her?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he threatened Sophie?”

Daniel said nothing.

Ethan stood.

That silence was enough.

As he turned away, Daniel spoke.

“There’s something Claire didn’t know.”

Ethan stopped.

“Richard wasn’t the first person to alter the trust.”

Alvarez leaned forward.

“Who was?”

Daniel looked directly at Ethan.

“Margaret.”

Ethan slowly turned.

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“You think Sophie’s grandmother is innocent?”

“What did she do?”

“She created the clause Richard was trying to exploit.”

“What clause?”

Daniel leaned back.

“The relocation clause.”

Ethan felt cold.

“Why?”

“Because thirty years ago, Margaret was planning to take Claire away from her father.”

History repeated itself.

Mother.

Daughter.

Granddaughter.

A family pattern existed beneath the crime.

And Margaret had not told them everything.
