Chapter 4 - THE GRANDMOTHER WHO WASN’T DEAD

Margaret Harrington had supposedly died in Switzerland.
At least that was what Claire had been told.
A private plane accident.
No survivors.
Claire had inherited the family trust afterward.
Yet forty-eight hours after Sophie’s rescue, Detective Alvarez placed a current photograph on Ethan’s kitchen table.
Margaret Harrington.
Seventy-two.
Alive.
Living under the name Margaret Hale.
Monte Carlo.
Ethan stared at the photograph.
“Claire believed her mother was dead.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Alvarez slid another document across the table.
“Because someone legally declared her dead.”
Richard Mercer had signed the supporting financial affidavits.
Ethan looked up.
“So he didn’t start stealing after Margaret died.”
“No.”
“He made her disappear first.”
“That is one possibility.”
“Why would Margaret cooperate?”
“We don’t know if she did.”
The trust suddenly became darker.
Richard had spent more than a decade removing one Harrington woman after another.
Margaret vanished.
Claire died.
Now Sophie was supposed to leave the country under a false identity.
Three generations.
One pattern.
Ethan opened Claire’s journal.
Her entries began nearly five years earlier.
Most were ordinary.
Sophie’s first ultrasound.
Argument with Ethan about paint colors.
Claire worrying she was becoming like her mother.
Then Richard’s name appeared.
Richard insists the trust is performing well, but the numbers do not reconcile.
Later:
Mother’s accident records make no sense.
Then:
I found a wire transfer authorized three days after Mother supposedly died.
The beneficiary authorization contained Margaret’s signature.
Meaning Margaret might have been alive after the accident.
Claire investigated secretly.
She discovered Richard had controlled nearly every communication between Margaret and the family in the months before her disappearance.
Then Celeste appeared in the journal.
Richard brought a woman named Celeste to the office today. He introduced her as a compliance consultant. I don’t trust her.
Another entry:
Celeste asked strange questions about Ethan’s travel schedule.
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
They had studied him.
Before Claire died.
They knew when he traveled.
When Claire would be alone.
When Sophie stayed with the nanny.
This had not been random.
Alvarez received a call.
She listened.
Then looked at Ethan.
“They found Richard.”
“Where?”
“JFK.”
“Leaving?”
“Trying.”
“For where?”
“France.”
Ethan stood.
“Can I speak to him?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because right now he’s asking for an attorney.”
Richard had used a forged passport.
He was arrested before boarding.
Inside his carry-on, investigators found thirty thousand euros.
Two encrypted phones.
And one photograph.
Margaret Harrington.
Alive.
Standing beside Celeste.
The date was six months earlier.
Ethan stared at it.
Celeste knew Sophie’s grandmother was alive.
Claire never had.
The next morning, prosecutors charged Richard with passport fraud and conspiracy related to Sophie’s planned removal.
More charges were expected.
Celeste was released temporarily under strict conditions while investigators continued building the case.
Ethan hated it.
Alvarez warned him.
“Do not contact her.”
“She locked my child in a suitcase.”
“I know.”
“She planned to take her out of the country.”
“I know.”
“And she walked out?”
“For now.”
Ethan stared at her.
Alvarez remained calm.
“We do this correctly, or people like Richard spend the rest of their lives saying the investigation was compromised.”
Ethan looked away.
Sophie entered with Nora, the longtime housekeeper.
Nora had worked for the family since before Claire died.
She had been visiting her sister the afternoon Sophie was locked inside the suitcase.
When she heard what happened, she returned immediately.
Nora placed breakfast on the table.
Then saw Margaret’s photograph.
The tray slipped from her hands.
A cup shattered.
Ethan jumped.
“Nora?”
She stared at the photograph.
“Where did you get that?”
Ethan’s pulse accelerated.
“You know her?”
Nora slowly sat down.
“I saw her.”
“When?”
Her face had gone pale.
“After Mrs. Whitmore died.”
Ethan froze.
“Where?”
“Here.”
He stopped breathing.
May you like
Nora pointed upstairs.
“Inside Claire’s bedroom.”
