CHAPTER 8 — THE PHOTOGRAPH UNDER THE FLOORBOARD

The first thing Lucas remembered when he woke up was his mother's voice.
Not her face.
Not the place where they lived.
Not the years they spent moving from one city to another.
Only her voice.
Soft.
Warm.
Always afraid.
"Lucas, promise me something."
"What, Mama?"
"No matter what happens... never forget who you are."
For years, those words confused him.
Because Lucas didn't know who he was.
He only knew who he wasn't.
He wasn't the child people wanted.
He wasn't the boy with a home.
He wasn't someone with a family waiting for him.
He was just Lucas.
A boy with an old shoeshine box.
A boy who learned how to survive before he learned how to dream.
But now everything had changed.
The necklace.
The Laurent family.
Alexander.
The truth that he might have been stolen from a life he was supposed to have.
And the possibility that his mother...
Was still alive.
The Laurent mansion was quiet that morning.
But it was the kind of quiet that came before a storm.
Everyone knew something was coming.
The discovery of Lucas had opened a door that many powerful people wanted to keep closed.
Alexander stood in his office, looking through old documents.
He had not slept.
Not even for a minute.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same thing.
A newborn baby.
A missing child.
A wife disappearing.
Fifteen years stolen.
"You're blaming yourself again."
Elena's voice came from behind him.
Alexander didn't turn.
"I should have protected them."
"You were fighting a battle you didn't understand."
"I was his father."
The words were quiet.
"But I wasn't there."
Elena walked closer.
She understood that pain.
Because she also carried guilt.
She had promised Isabelle she would find her nephew.
And she failed.
Until fate brought Lucas to her bakery.
Through a piece of cake.
Through a rainy street.
Through a kindness nobody expected.
Meanwhile...
Lucas sat in the mansion library with Subi.
The room was enormous.
Thousands of books lined the walls.
Lucas looked around.
"Does your mom read all these?"
Subi smiled.
"No."
Lucas looked surprised.
"Then why have so many?"
Subi shrugged.
"Maybe because rich people like having things they don't use."
Lucas laughed quietly.
It was the first real laugh Alexander had heard from him.
And for a moment...
He didn't see a missing heir.
He didn't see a stolen child.
He saw only a boy.
A child who deserved a normal life.
Suddenly, a servant entered.
"Mr. Laurent."
Alexander looked up.
"There is someone here."
"Who?"
The servant hesitated.
"A former employee of Saint-Claire Hospital."
Alexander immediately stood.
"Bring him in."
The man who entered looked old.
Tired.
His hands shook.
He carried a small brown envelope.
"My name is Henri Dubois."
Alexander stared.
"The hospital administrator?"
The man nodded.
"I know you have questions."
Alexander stepped closer.
"You disappeared."
Henri looked down.
"I was afraid."
"Of who?"
The old man didn't answer immediately.
Then he whispered:
"Victoria Laurent."
The room became silent.
Henri placed the envelope on the table.
"I kept this because I knew one day someone would need it."
Alexander opened it.
Inside were several documents.
Original hospital records.
The real ones.
Not the altered copies.
Elena moved closer.
Lucas watched from the doorway.
Alexander read the first page.
Then his expression changed.
"What is this?"
Henri swallowed.
"The truth."
The document revealed something shocking.
The night Adrian disappeared...
The baby was never removed from the hospital.
He was transferred.
Officially.
Legally.
Under a false identity.
Alexander's hands tightened.
"Who signed this?"
Henri looked at him.
"Your mother."
Silence.
Again.
Victoria.
Always Victoria.
But there was more.
The transfer papers showed another name.
The person who received the baby.
A woman.
Isabelle Moreau.
Alexander looked confused.
"Isabelle?"
Henri nodded.
"She took him."
Everyone froze.
Lucas stepped forward.
"My mother?"
Henri looked at him sadly.
"Yes."
The room became cold.
Because suddenly the story changed.
For fifteen years, everyone believed Adrian was stolen.
But the documents showed something else.
Isabelle had taken her own child.
Why?
Alexander's voice shook.
"Why would she do that?"
Henri looked at Lucas.
"Because she discovered something."
"What?"
The old man hesitated.
Then said:
"She discovered the Laurent family planned to take him away permanently."
Nobody spoke.
Henri continued.
"Victoria believed the child was a threat to the family."
"She wanted a different heir."
Alexander's face darkened.
"Who?"
Henri looked away.
"I don't know."
But everyone understood.
Someone else.
Someone inside the family.
Someone who benefited from Adrian disappearing.
After Henri left...
Alexander couldn't stop thinking.
Isabelle didn't abandon their son.
She protected him.
But why didn't she tell him?
Why didn't she trust him?
Elena looked at the documents.
"There must be more."
Alexander nodded.
"There is always more."
Lucas stood silently.
Then asked:
"Did my mother hate my father?"
Alexander looked at him.
"No."
"Then why did she hide me?"
Alexander didn't know how to answer.
Because the truth was painful.
Sometimes people hid the ones they loved...
Not because they wanted to leave them.
But because they were afraid of losing them.
That evening...
Elena received a message.
A location.
No name.
Only one sentence.
"If you want to know where Isabelle disappeared, come alone."
She stared at the phone.
Her heart raced.
Because she knew.
Someone wanted to reveal the truth.
But she also knew something else.
In the Laurent family...
Every secret came with a price.
Later that night...
In a forgotten apartment in the oldest part of Paris...
Elena stood inside a dusty room.
The person who contacted her was gone.
But something remained.
A wooden box.
Hidden beneath the floor.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside were old letters.
A child's blanket.
And one photograph.
Elena picked it up.
Her breath stopped.
It was a picture of Isabelle.
Holding baby Adrian.
But beside them...
Was someone else.
Someone Elena recognized immediately.
Someone who was supposed to have nothing to do with this.
Victoria Laurent.
But the shocking part wasn't that Victoria was there.
It was what was written on the back.
Elena turned the photograph over.
Five words.
Five words that changed everything.
"She helped me save him."
Elena stared at the message.
Her entire understanding collapsed.
Because if this was true...
Then Victoria wasn't the person who stole Adrian.
She was the person who helped protect him.
But why?
Why would Victoria hide the truth?
Why would she let everyone hate her?
Why would she allow Alexander to believe she destroyed his family?
Unless...
Unless the real enemy was someone else.
Someone nobody had suspected.
Someone who had been hiding behind the Laurent name for fifteen years.
At the same time...
Lucas stood alone in the mansion hallway.
He looked at an old family portrait.
Alexander.
Isabelle.
Baby Adrian.
A family that existed before he lost everything.
Then suddenly...
He heard a voice behind him.
A woman's voice.
A voice he had not heard since childhood.
"Lucas."
His body froze.
The world stopped.
Slowly...
He turned around.
Standing at the end of the hallway...
Was a woman with tears in her eyes.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
His mother.
Isabelle Moreau.
Lucas couldn't breathe.
"Mama?"
The woman covered her mouth.
And whispered:
"My son..."
Fifteen years of pain.
Fifteen years of searching.
Fifteen years of secrets.
Ended in one impossible moment.
Mother and son were finally standing face to face.
But neither of them knew...
The hardest truth was still waiting.
May you like
Because Isabelle had not returned only to reunite with Lucas.
She had returned to reveal the person who destroyed their lives.
