CHAPTER 3 â THE EMPIRE BEGINS TO COLLAPSE
The next morning, the headlines hadn't appeared yet.
But panic already had.
Santiago spent the night calling politicians, judges, investors, and family friends.
One by one...
They refused to answer.
Those who did answer ended the conversation within minutes.
Because everyone had received the same package.
Video evidence.
Financial records.
Medical fraud.
Domestic abuse.
Conspiracy.
By nine o'clock, investigators arrived with court-authorized search warrants.
Every office inside the mansion was sealed.
Computers.
Hard drives.
Phones.
Accounting records.
Everything disappeared into evidence boxes.
Beatriz demanded to speak with the lead investigator.
"I know people in this government."
The investigator barely looked at her.
"So does Mr. Salazar."
Then he continued cataloging evidence.
Meanwhile, I sat safely inside my father's estate, surrounded by doctors and nurses he trusted.
For the first time in months...
I slept.
When I woke up, my father was sitting beside the window.
"I failed you," he said quietly.
"You left because you wanted your own life."
"I should have checked sooner."
I reached for his hand.
"No."
"I hid everything."
"I wanted to believe love could fix him."
He squeezed my hand gently.
"Love never asks someone to survive violence."
That afternoon, Santiago appeared on television.
Not as a celebrated entrepreneur.
As the subject of multiple criminal investigations.
Investors immediately suspended negotiations.
Banks froze several credit facilities.
Board members resigned one after another.
The Rivas empire wasn't collapsing because of my father.
It was collapsing because the truth had finally become public.
Late that evening, my attorney entered the room carrying one final folder.
"The judge signed the emergency protection order."
"You and your son are safe."
I placed both hands over my stomach.
My baby kicked gently.
May you like
For the first time...
It felt like hope.
