CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN SANTIAGO NEVER EXPECTED

CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN SANTIAGO NEVER EXPECTED

The mansion fell into absolute silence.

Even the grandfather clock in the hallway seemed louder than anyone's breathing.

Santiago stared at the man standing in the doorway, searching his memory for a face he had seen only in newspapers and financial magazines.

Then the color drained from his face.

"Ricardo... Salazar?"

My father didn't answer immediately.

He slowly removed his leather gloves and handed them to one of the security guards before looking directly at me.

His eyes softened for only a second.

"Are you hurt, mija?"

I tried to answer, but my throat tightened.

Instead, I nodded.

That was enough.

His expression hardened again.

He walked across the marble floor until he stood between me and Santiago.

Without raising his voice, he said,

"From this moment forward, no one in this house will come within ten feet of my daughter."

One of Santiago's lawyers stepped forward.

"Mr. Salazar, perhaps we can discuss—"

"No."

The single word stopped him cold.

"I've spent the last forty-eight hours reviewing evidence that would destroy every member of this household."

Beatriz finally spoke.

"This is a misunderstanding."

My father looked at her as if she didn't exist.

"A misunderstanding doesn't require forged psychiatric evaluations."

He nodded toward one of the attorneys beside him.

The attorney opened a briefcase and placed several folders on the dining table.

Each one contained copies of the documents I had discovered.

Insurance policies.

False medical reports.

Custody petitions.

Financial transfers.

Even internal emails between Santiago and Beatriz discussing how long I should remain institutionalized after giving birth.

Santiago's confidence cracked.

"Where did you get those?"

"I didn't."

My father looked at me.

"My daughter did."

For the first time, Santiago realized I had never been the helpless woman he imagined.

I had been collecting evidence.

Recording conversations.

Saving documents.

Building a case.

"You set me up," Santiago growled.

"No," I answered quietly.

"You destroyed yourself."

Before he could respond, another attorney connected a laptop to the television in the living room.

The screen lit up.

There was Santiago.

Only minutes earlier.

Threatening me.

Insulting me.

Raising his hand.

His mother's voice echoed through the room.

"Don't leave any visible marks."

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then my father's attorney quietly said,

"The livestream has already been archived in three separate locations."

"There are also encrypted backups."

"In case anyone was considering destroying evidence."

Santiago looked at the security guards.

Then at the lawyers.

Then back at me.

For the first time...

He understood he wasn't controlling the situation anymore.

He was standing inside a crime scene.
