CHAPTER 2: THE NECKLACE NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE

The little girl froze in the center of the courtroom.

Every eye turned toward her.

She wasn't crying anymore.

She was staring directly at Margaret Gable.

Then she lifted something with both trembling hands.

A gold necklace.

Old.

Scratched.

Its emerald pendant caught the courtroom lights like a tiny green flame.

Margaret's face drained of color.

"No..." she whispered.

Her attorney looked confused.

"Mrs. Gable?"

Margaret didn't answer.

She couldn't.

Because she recognized that necklace instantly.

Arthur Sterling had given it to someone thirty-two years earlier.

Someone the world believed had disappeared forever.

The judge struck his gavel.

"Who is this child?"

A court officer carefully approached the girl.

"Sweetheart... where did you get that necklace?"

The girl looked around nervously before pointing toward Margaret.

"She told me never to show anyone."

Gasps rippled through the courtroom.

The prosecutor smiled.

"So Mrs. Gable has been communicating with the witness?"

"No!" Margaret shouted.

"I've never seen her before today."

The girl's innocent voice echoed through the room.

"You gave it to Grandma Lily... before she died."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Margaret stopped breathing.

There was only one person who had ever called Lily "Grandma."

One.

The child shouldn't even exist.

Arthur Sterling had paid millions to erase every record.

The prosecutor frowned.

"Who is Grandma Lily?"

The little girl reached into the pocket of her oversized sweater.

"I have her letters."

She pulled out a bundle of yellowed envelopes tied together with faded blue ribbon.

The courtroom clerk accepted them carefully.

The oldest envelope was dated...

Thirty-one years earlier.

Addressed to Arthur Sterling.

Never mailed.

The prosecutor opened the first letter.

His expression changed instantly.

"What is it?" the judge asked.

He swallowed hard.

"This letter says..."

He looked toward Arthur's family seated in the front row.

"...Arthur Sterling fathered another child before he married."

Reporters exploded into frantic whispers.

Cameras flashed nonstop.

Arthur's eldest son jumped to his feet.

"That's impossible!"

The prosecutor continued reading.

"Lily feared Arthur's business rivals would kill the child... so Margaret agreed to hide both mother and daughter."

Every pair of eyes turned toward Margaret again.

She slowly closed her eyes.

The truth she had buried for three decades...

May you like

...was beginning to surface.

And the murder case was no longer the biggest secret in the courtroom.
