CHAPTER 5 — THE THIRD CHILD

The crying stopped the moment Nora stepped through the hidden doorway.
That frightened her more than the crying itself.
For twenty-four years, she had been told she was an only child.
Then she discovered Claire.
Then she discovered that Claire had been hidden from her.
Now she had just remembered something even more impossible.
There had been a third baby.
And somewhere beyond the narrow passage, someone had been waiting for them.
Nora stood perfectly still.
Claire was beside her.
Adrian followed with his weapon raised.
Behind them, Victor Hale remained in the archive.
He didn't follow.
That frightened Nora too.
If Victor Hale was truly the monster they believed him to be, why wasn't he trying to stop them?
Nora looked back.
Victor stood beneath the red emergency lights.
His face was pale.
“No farther.”
Nora stared at him.
“Why?”
“You don't understand what is down there.”
“Then explain.”
Victor shook his head.
“You will regret opening that door.”
Nora took another step.
“You've been telling me what to fear my entire life.”
She looked at Claire.
“I think I'll decide for myself.”
Victor's voice hardened.
“Nora.”
She stopped.
“Your mother wanted you to stay away from this.”
Nora turned.
“My mother wanted me to know the truth.”
“You think she would want this?”
“I think she would want her daughters together.”
Victor's jaw tightened.
“Then you know nothing about Miriam.”
Nora stepped into the passage.
“Maybe.”
She looked over her shoulder.
“But I know what she died protecting.”
Victor stared at her.
“No.”
Nora smiled faintly.
“You keep saying that.”
Then she disappeared into the darkness.
The passage was narrow.
The ceiling was low.
Old pipes ran overhead.
Every few feet, a small emergency light flickered.
Claire stayed close to Nora.
Neither woman spoke for almost a minute.
Finally Claire whispered,
“You heard it too.”
“The crying?”
“Yes.”
Nora nodded.
“What if it's not a child?”
Claire looked at her.
“What else could it be?”
“I don't know.”
Adrian moved ahead of them.
“Stay behind me.”
Nora almost laughed.
“That's becoming your favorite sentence.”
“Because you keep doing dangerous things.”
“So do you.”
“Yes.”
He glanced back.
“But I know what I'm doing.”
Nora raised an eyebrow.
“Do you?”
Adrian didn't answer.
Claire walked between them.
“Stop.”
They both looked at her.
She pointed ahead.
A faint light appeared at the end of the passage.
The three stopped.
Adrian raised his weapon.
They moved forward slowly.
The light came from beneath a door.
A small white door.
Unlike the old metal doors behind them, this one looked new.
Almost untouched.
Nora felt a strange pressure in her chest.
“Someone has been using this place.”
Adrian nodded.
“Recently.”
“How can you tell?”
“Dust.”
He pointed toward the floor.
Footprints.
Fresh.
Nora stared.
“Someone came through here.”
“Recently.”
“How recently?”
Adrian crouched.
“Hours.”
Claire's face tightened.
“So someone knew we were coming.”
Adrian stood.
“Probably.”
Nora looked at the door.
There was no handle.
Only a small glass panel.
She stepped closer.
Inside was a room.
A chair.
A table.
A lamp.
And a bed.
On the bed was a blanket.
Still warm.
Nora's heart began pounding.
“Someone was here.”
Adrian nodded.
Claire pressed her palm against the glass.
“She's gone.”
“How do you know?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Because I remember this room.”
Nora stared at her.
“You've been here?”
“Once.”
“When?”
“I don't know.”
Claire's voice trembled.
“When I was six.”
Nora felt a chill.
“You were brought here?”
Claire nodded.
“I woke up in that bed.”
“What happened?”
“I was alone.”
“Who found you?”
“Miriam.”
Nora looked through the glass.
“Our mother?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“She told me not to be afraid.”
Nora swallowed.
“What happened after that?”
Claire opened her eyes.
“She gave me something.”
“What?”
“A name.”
Nora frowned.
“What name?”
Claire looked at her.
“Yours.”
Nora stared.
“Why?”
“Because she told me that if we ever got separated, I should remember you.”
Nora's eyes filled with tears.
Claire continued.
“She said your name was the most important thing in the world.”
Nora touched the glass.
Then she noticed something scratched into the metal frame.
A child's handwriting.
N + C + ?
Three initials.
The third was scratched away.
Nora traced it with her finger.
“Someone tried to erase this.”
Adrian examined it.
“Not someone.”
“What?”
“A child.”
Nora looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“The height.”
The scratch was only a few feet above the floor.
Claire stepped closer.
“She was here.”
“Who?”
“Our sister.”
Nora's heart tightened.
“Our third sister.”
Adrian found a hidden release mechanism.
The door opened.
The room was empty.
Except for one object.
A small wooden box.
Nora approached it.
The box was covered in dust.
She crouched.
There was a name engraved on the lid.
ELISE.
Nora stared.
“Who is Elise?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Adrian looked at the box.
“Open it.”
Nora hesitated.
“Why me?”
“Because it has your mother's initials.”
She looked closer.
Tiny letters were carved into the side.
M.V.
Nora opened the box.
Inside was a child's bracelet.
Three tiny metal charms hung from it.
One for each child.
The first was engraved:
N
The second:
C
The third:
E
Nora touched it.
“She's called Elise.”
Claire nodded.
“Maybe.”
Beneath the bracelet was a photograph.
Nora picked it up.
Her hands immediately began shaking.
It showed Miriam.
She was sitting on the floor.
Claire was beside her.
Nora was on the other side.
And between them was another little girl.
Three girls.
Six years old.
All holding hands.
Nora stared.
“I remember this.”
Claire looked at her.
“What?”
“This day.”
Nora closed her eyes.
A memory surfaced.
Miriam was laughing.
Claire was holding a red balloon.
The third girl was crying.
Nora was trying to comfort her.
Then Miriam had whispered something.
Nora remembered it clearly now.
“Don't tell anyone about Elise.”
Nora opened her eyes.
“She told us to keep her secret.”
Claire nodded.
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
Nora looked at the photograph again.
On the back was a sentence.
ELISE MUST NEVER BE FOUND.
Adrian read it.
“Why would Miriam hide her own daughter?”
Nora shook her head.
“She didn't.”
Claire looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Nora turned the photograph over.
“Look.”
There was another message.
Written in different handwriting.
IF THEY FIND HER, THEY WILL FIND ALL THREE.
Adrian's expression changed.
“Then Elise isn't the secret.”
“What is?”
He looked at the wall.
“Where she went.”
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Adrian immediately moved in front of the women.
“Stay back.”
Nora whispered,
“Who is it?”
He shook his head.
The footsteps stopped.
Silence.
Then a woman's voice came from the corridor.
“Nora.”
Nora froze.
She knew that voice.
The woman from the hallway.
The woman who looked exactly like her.
Claire stepped forward.
“She's here.”
Adrian held out an arm.
“Wait.”
A shadow appeared beneath the doorway.
Then the woman stepped inside.
She was carrying a gun.
Adrian raised his.
The woman stopped.
“Put it down.”
Adrian didn't.
The woman looked at Nora.
“Tell him.”
Nora swallowed.
“Put the gun down.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Nora—”
“Please.”
He lowered it slightly.
The woman did the same.
Claire stared at her.
“You're not Elise.”
The woman shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who are you?”
The woman looked at Nora.
“My name is Mara.”
Nora's heart tightened.
“Mara what?”
“Mara Hale.”
Adrian's expression changed.
“Victor's daughter.”
Mara nodded.
“Yes.”
Nora looked at her.
“Why are you helping us?”
Mara laughed softly.
“Because my father destroyed my family too.”
She put the gun on the table.
“I've been trying to stop him for years.”
Adrian didn't trust her.
“Then why did you work for him?”
“Because he made me.”
“How?”
Mara looked at Claire.
“He told me my sister was dead.”
Claire stiffened.
“What?”
Mara's eyes filled with tears.
“I had a sister.”
Nora's pulse quickened.
“Who?”
Mara looked at her.
“Your mother.”
Silence.
Nora's mind went blank.
“What?”
Mara nodded.
“Victor Hale wasn't just Miriam's enemy.”
She looked at Adrian.
“He was her brother.”
Adrian's face went completely still.
Nora stared.
“That means…”
Mara whispered,
“Your grandfather wasn't the only person who betrayed Miriam.”
She looked at Claire.
“He did too.”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
Mara stepped closer.
“He was supposed to help her escape.”
“But he didn't.”
“He changed sides.”
“Why?”
Mara looked toward the hidden room.
“Because Victor promised him something.”
“What?”
“Control of the trust.”
Nora's face hardened.
“My inheritance.”
“Yes.”
“But that's not why he separated us.”
Mara nodded.
“No.”
“Then why?”
Mara's eyes moved to the photograph.
“Because Elise was different.”
Nora stared.
“How?”
Mara hesitated.
“She was born with a genetic condition.”
Claire frowned.
“What condition?”
Mara shook her head.
“I don't know the medical name.”
“Then what do you know?”
“She could remember everything.”
Nora's breath stopped.
“Everything?”
Mara nodded.
“Faces.”
“Voices.”
“Events.”
“Places.”
Claire stared.
“Like me.”
“No.”
Mara looked at her.
“Unlike you.”
Claire frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Your memories were intact.”
Mara looked at Nora.
“But Nora's were altered.”
Then she looked toward the empty bed.
“Elise remembered what they did.”
Nora whispered,
“What did they do?”
Mara didn't answer.
Instead, she pulled another photograph from her coat.
She handed it to Nora.
It showed a laboratory.
Several adults stood around a machine.
In the center was a child.
A little girl.
Nora's stomach turned.
It was Elise.
Six years old.
Strapped into a chair.
Her eyes were open.
She was staring directly at the camera.
On the wall behind her was written:
PROJECT ECHO.
Nora felt sick.
“What is this?”
Mara looked at her.
“The program your mother tried to destroy.”
Claire's voice shook.
“They experimented on her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she couldn't forget.”
Nora looked at the photograph.
“Where is she now?”
Mara didn't answer.
Nora grabbed her arm.
“Where is she?”
Mara looked at her.
“Alive.”
Nora's heart slammed.
“Where?”
“Somewhere they can't reach.”
“Where?”
Mara hesitated.
“That's what I'm trying to find.”
Nora released her.
“You don't know?”
“No.”
“Then why did you come here?”
Mara looked toward the ceiling.
“Because someone else does.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Who?”
Mara's expression changed.
“Marcus.”
Nora's heart dropped.
“Marcus?”
“Yes.”
Adrian's face hardened.
“My security chief?”
Mara nodded.
“He works for Victor.”
Silence.
Nora remembered Marcus disappearing in the archive.
She remembered how easily he had moved through the building.
How he had known every security route.
How he had disappeared at exactly the right moment.
Adrian's expression darkened.
“He betrayed us.”
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“He betrayed Victor.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
“Marcus has been working undercover for years.”
Nora looked at Mara.
“Then why didn't he tell us?”
“Because Victor was watching him.”
Mara took a breath.
“And because Marcus is Elise's father.”
The room went silent.
Nora stared.
“That's impossible.”
Mara nodded.
“I thought so too.”
Claire whispered,
“Who is Elise's father?”
Mara looked at Adrian.
“Your brother.”
Adrian froze.
“Daniel?”
Mara nodded.
Nora felt her world shift again.
Daniel.
The brother Adrian had said disappeared.
The man everyone believed was missing.
The man who had supposedly been searching for Miriam.
He was Elise's father.
But if Daniel was alive—
then why had he disappeared?
And where was Elise?
Nora looked at Mara.
“You said Marcus knows where she is.”
“Yes.”
“Then find him.”
Mara shook her head.
“We can't.”
“Why?”
“Because he's already been captured.”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“By whom?”
Mara looked at the floor.
“Victor.”
The lights suddenly went out.
Again.
Nora cursed.
Adrian raised his weapon.
Mara grabbed Claire.
“Stay down!”
A door slammed somewhere behind them.
Then a voice echoed through the corridor.
Marcus.
“Adrian!”
Adrian shouted,
“Where are you?”
“Don't trust Mara!”
Mara's face went pale.
“What?”
Marcus's voice came again.
“She isn't who she says she is!”
Nora stared at Mara.
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Who are you?”
Mara stepped backward.
“I told you.”
Marcus shouted:
“She works for Victor!”
Mara's eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
Then a gunshot exploded.
The voice stopped.
Nora screamed.
“Marcus!”
No answer.
Adrian grabbed Mara.
“Where is he?”
“I don't know!”
“You're lying.”
“No!”
Claire suddenly pointed toward the far wall.
“Look.”
A red light appeared.
A camera.
Someone was watching them.
Then a screen activated.
Victor Hale appeared.
He smiled.
“You should never trust the first person who offers to help you.”
Mara looked at the screen.
“Father.”
Victor ignored her.
He looked at Nora.
“You've found the third child.”
Nora stepped forward.
“Where is she?”
Victor smiled.
“Closer than you think.”
“Where?”
“You're standing in the room where she was born.”
Nora froze.
The floor beneath her seemed to disappear.
“What?”
Victor continued.
“Your mother didn't hide Elise.”
“She hid her from you.”
Claire stared at Nora.
Victor's voice became colder.
“She knew that if you remembered your sister, you would remember everything else.”
Nora's heart pounded.
“What else?”
Victor smiled.
“The night your mother disappeared.”
The screen flickered.
A new image appeared.
Miriam.
Alive.
Older.
Standing beside a teenage girl.
Nora's breath stopped.
The girl was Elise.
But she wasn't six anymore.
She was perhaps seventeen.
Maybe eighteen.
And she was holding a photograph.
The photograph showed Nora.
Victor spoke.
“Elise has been watching you for years.”
Nora whispered,
“Where is she?”
Victor leaned toward the camera.
“She is watching you right now.”
Nora turned.
Nothing.
Then Claire looked toward the ceiling.
“There.”
A tiny red light blinked above them.
A camera.
Victor smiled.
“You were never looking for her.”
Nora stared at the camera.
“You were waiting for her to find you.”
Victor nodded.
“Exactly.”
The screen went black.
Then the emergency lights returned.
Mara suddenly looked toward the door.
“She heard everything.”
Nora turned.
“Who?”
Mara whispered:
“Elise.”
A sound came from behind them.
A soft click.
Nora turned slowly.
A young woman stood in the doorway.
She looked about twenty-four.
Dark hair.
Pale skin.
The same eyes.
The same face.
But something about her expression was different.
She wasn't frightened.
She wasn't confused.
She looked completely calm.
She stared at Nora.
Then at Claire.
And finally at Adrian.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You took long enough.”
Nora couldn't speak.
Claire stepped forward.
“Elise?”
The young woman nodded.
“Yes.”
Nora stared at her.
“My sister.”
Elise smiled.
“Both of them.”
Nora's heart stopped.
“What do you mean?”
Elise looked at the three of them.
“There are things you still don't know.”
Nora stepped closer.
“What?”
Elise's expression became serious.
“Our mother didn't disappear.”
Nora froze.
“Then where is she?”
Elise looked behind Nora.
Toward the darkness.
“She never left.”
A figure appeared at the end of the corridor.
A woman.
Older.
Gray streaks in her hair.
Tears in her eyes.
Nora's breath caught.
Claire stopped breathing.
Adrian lowered his weapon.
The woman whispered:
“Nora.”
Nora knew that voice.
She had heard it in her dreams.
In old recordings.
In memories buried beneath twenty-four years of silence.
She whispered one word.
“Mom?”
The woman stepped forward.
Miriam Vale was alive.
And she had finally come back for her daughters.
But before Nora could reach her, Miriam looked at Adrian and said:
“You brought them to me.”
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
Miriam's expression changed.
“You don't understand.”
She looked at Nora.
“Adrian was never supposed to find you.”
Nora stopped.
“Why?”
Miriam's eyes filled with fear.
“Because he isn't the man you think he is.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Miriam.”
She shook her head.
“Don't.”
Nora looked between them.
Then she noticed something behind Miriam.
A man stood in the shadows.
Daniel.
Her father.
Alive.
And holding a gun.
He pointed it directly at Adrian.
“Step away from my daughters.”
Nora froze.
Her father had returned.
Her mother was alive.
Her three sisters were finally standing in the same place.
And yet the look on Miriam's face told Nora that the reunion she had dreamed about her entire life was about to become something much darker.
Because Miriam wasn't smiling.
She was terrified.
And she was looking at Nora as if she had just realized the worst possible person had found her first.
Daniel pulled back the hammer.
“Adrian.”
His voice echoed through the underground corridor.
“You have ten seconds.”
Adrian didn't move.
Nora looked at him.
“Why is my father pointing a gun at you?”
Adrian stared at Daniel.
Then at Nora.
His voice was barely audible.
“Because he knows what I did.”
Nora's heart sank.
“What did you do?”
Adrian looked at her.
And before he could answer—
the entire underground facility shook.
A massive explosion erupted somewhere above them.
The lights died.
Miriam screamed:
“THEY FOUND US!”
Daniel grabbed Nora.
Claire grabbed Elise.
Adrian pulled Mara toward the tunnel.
And somewhere in the darkness, Victor Hale began laughing.
Because the game had never been about finding the third daughter.
It had been about bringing all three daughters into the same room.
And now that they were finally together—
Victor no longer needed to hide.
The doors began locking one by one.
The underground archive started burning.
And on every screen, one message appeared:
PROJECT ECHO — FINAL PHASE ACTIVATED.
Nora stared at the words.
Then she heard Miriam whisper behind her:
“Run.”
Nora turned.
“Why?”
Miriam looked directly into her eyes.
“Because the person who designed Project Echo…”
May you like
She paused.
“…was me.”
