CHAPTER 10 — SUBJECT ZERO

Nora opened her eyes.

The white room was silent.

Too silent.

No alarms.

No gunshots.

No screaming.

No smoke.

Nothing.

Just white walls.

A white floor.

A white ceiling.

And Miriam standing behind a glass door.

Nora stared at her mother.

“Mom?”

Miriam didn't move.

She looked terrified.

Nora stood.

“Mom!”

Miriam raised both hands.

“Don't come closer.”

Nora stopped.

“Why?”

“Because this isn't real.”

Nora looked around.

“What do you mean?”

“This room.”

Miriam pointed toward the walls.

“None of it is real.”

Nora's heart began racing.

“Then where am I?”

Miriam whispered:

“Inside your own memory.”

Nora froze.

“What?”

Miriam looked at her.

“Someone has taken control of your memory architecture.”

“Who?”

Miriam's eyes shifted.

“Subject Zero.”

Nora's blood ran cold.

The little girl appeared behind her.

Six years old.

Bare feet.

Dark hair.

The same eyes.

The same face.

The same voice.

She smiled.

“Hello again.”

Nora turned.

“Who are you?”

The girl smiled.

“You already know.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

She walked around Nora slowly.

“You keep asking everyone else who you are.”

She stopped directly in front of her.

“But you never ask yourself.”

Nora stared.

“What are you?”

The girl answered:

“Your first memory.”

Nora frowned.

“I don't understand.”

“You weren't born first.”

“What?”

“Your body was.”

The girl's smile disappeared.

“But I existed before you.”

Nora stepped backward.

“How?”

“I was created.”

“By whom?”

“Miriam.”

Nora looked at her mother.

Miriam closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Nora's chest tightened.

“You created me?”

Miriam shook her head.

“Not you.”

She whispered:

“I created her.”

Nora looked at the little girl.

“Then who am I?”

The little girl smiled.

“That is the question.”

The white room changed.

The walls disappeared.

Suddenly Nora stood inside the old Vale mansion.

She recognized the hallway.

The red carpet.

The grandfather clock.

The portraits.

Everything looked exactly as it had twenty-four years ago.

She was six again.

But this time, she wasn't alone.

Claire stood at the end of the hallway.

Elise was beside her.

Adrian was sitting on the stairs.

And the little girl stood in the middle.

Subject Zero.

Nora approached her.

“Why are we here?”

Zero looked around.

“Because this is where everything began.”

Nora frowned.

“The mansion?”

“Yes.”

“But Project Echo happened at the hospital.”

“No.”

Zero shook her head.

“It began here.”

A door opened.

Nora saw her grandfather.

Young.

Healthy.

Standing with Victor.

And Miriam.

The three adults were arguing.

Miriam looked furious.

“You can't do this.”

Her grandfather answered:

“You already did.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You created her.”

Miriam froze.

Victor stepped forward.

“You created a memory construct.”

Miriam shook her head.

“A therapy model.”

Victor smiled.

“A consciousness model.”

Miriam's face became pale.

“She was never supposed to become self-aware.”

The little girl beside Nora whispered:

“But I did.”

Nora looked at her.

“What happened?”

Zero smiled.

“I heard everything.”

Miriam walked through the memory.

She was younger.

Exhausted.

She carried a folder.

Inside was a diagram.

At the top:

PROJECT ECHO — PHASE ZERO.

Nora stared.

“Phase Zero?”

Zero nodded.

“Before children.”

“Before Subject 04?”

“Yes.”

“Before all of us.”

“Yes.”

Nora looked at Miriam.

“What did she create?”

Zero answered:

“An artificial memory.”

Nora frowned.

“A memory?”

“Yes.”

“Can a memory think?”

“Normally, no.”

Zero smiled.

“But this one learned.”

Nora felt cold.

“You became conscious.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because Miriam used her own memories.”

Nora stared.

“She used her memories to create you.”

“Yes.”

“Then you're part of her.”

Zero nodded.

“Part of her.”

She pointed at Nora.

“And part of you.”

Nora's heart tightened.

“Why?”

“Because later, they used me to build you.”

Nora couldn't breathe.

“What?”

Zero continued:

“They copied my memory architecture into your brain before you were born.”

Nora stared.

“I was created from you.”

“Yes.”

“Then what am I?”

Zero smiled sadly.

“The body they gave me.”

Nora's mind went blank.

She looked at Miriam.

“Mom.”

Miriam's eyes filled with tears.

“I tried to destroy the program.”

“But you didn't.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because by then, you were already alive.”

Nora shook her head.

“You used me.”

“I saved you.”

“From what?”

“From him.”

Miriam pointed toward the grandfather.

“He wanted to transfer his consciousness into you.”

Nora stared.

“Why me?”

“Because your brain was compatible.”

“Because of Zero.”

“Yes.”

“So I was born to be a vessel.”

Miriam nodded.

“But I refused to let that happen.”

Nora looked at Zero.

“And she?”

“She was the key.”

Nora frowned.

“How?”

Miriam answered:

“Zero could store memories without losing herself.”

Nora understood.

“You used her to stabilize me.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

Victor stepped forward in the memory.

“We can make the girl remember anything.”

Miriam shook her head.

“No.”

Victor smiled.

“Then we'll make her forget.”

The memory shifted.

Nora saw herself as a child.

Standing beside Claire.

Then Elise.

Then Adrian.

Victor entered the room.

He held a device.

Miriam screamed:

“Don't!”

Victor activated it.

Nora collapsed.

Zero appeared beside her.

“She saved you.”

Nora looked at her.

“Who?”

“Me.”

“You?”

“I absorbed the memory.”

Nora stared.

“You took it from me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were too young to carry it.”

Nora's eyes filled.

“What memory?”

Zero looked at her.

“The memory of your grandfather killing someone.”

Nora froze.

“Who?”

Zero didn't answer.

Nora stepped closer.

“Who did he kill?”

Zero whispered:

“Evelyn.”

Nora's heart stopped.

“My aunt.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because she tried to destroy me.”

Nora stared.

“Why would she destroy you?”

“Because she believed I wasn't human.”

Nora frowned.

“Were you?”

Zero looked at her.

“That depends on what you think makes someone human.”

The memory shifted again.

A laboratory.

Evelyn stood before the machine.

Miriam was crying.

Victor was holding a gun.

And the grandfather stood behind them.

Zero was inside the machine.

Evelyn shouted:

“She's alive!”

Victor answered:

“She is a program.”

“She thinks.”

“She remembers.”

“That doesn't make her human.”

Evelyn turned toward Miriam.

“You know I'm right.”

Miriam shook her head.

“No.”

“You created something that can suffer.”

“I know.”

“Then shut it down.”

Miriam couldn't move.

Evelyn stepped toward the machine.

Zero watched from inside.

Evelyn whispered:

“I'm sorry.”

Then she pulled a lever.

The machine overloaded.

Victor fired.

Evelyn fell.

Nora watched in horror.

“She died trying to save Zero.”

Miriam nodded.

“And Zero survived.”

“How?”

“She transferred herself.”

“Into me?”

“Yes.”

Nora touched her chest.

“So she has been inside me my whole life.”

Miriam nodded.

“Not awake.”

“Then how did she wake up?”

Miriam looked at the little girl.

“Because the machine was activated.”

Nora understood.

“Project Echo woke her.”

“Yes.”

Zero stepped closer.

“I've always been here.”

Nora looked at her.

“Why didn't I know?”

“Because you were afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of yourself.”

The white room began cracking.

The floor trembled.

Zero looked upward.

“Someone is trying to enter.”

“Who?”

“Alexander.”

Nora froze.

“He can enter my memories?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he carries the original Echo architecture.”

Nora frowned.

“So he's connected to me.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Zero looked at her.

“He is your brother.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Zero's expression became serious.

“He is more than your brother.”

Nora waited.

“He is the first biological carrier of Echo-00.”

Nora felt cold.

“And me?”

“You are the final carrier.”

“For what?”

Zero smiled.

“For him.”

Nora's heart dropped.

The room suddenly shattered.

Alexander stepped through.

He wore the same gray suit.

But his face was different now.

Older.

Almost ancient.

His eyes were filled with something Nora had never seen before.

Regret.

He looked at Zero.

“You shouldn't have awakened.”

Zero smiled.

“Neither should you.”

Alexander turned toward Nora.

“You finally understand.”

Nora stepped forward.

“You wanted to transfer into me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I am dying.”

Nora stared.

“What?”

“My body has been failing for years.”

“You've been replacing yourself.”

“Yes.”

“With copies.”

“Yes.”

“And my grandfather?”

Alexander nodded.

“He taught me.”

“Then why do you need me?”

“Because you are the only stable vessel.”

Nora shook her head.

“No.”

Alexander stepped closer.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

“You aren't a normal human anymore.”

Nora froze.

“What?”

“You've carried Zero for twenty-four years.”

“So?”

“So her memory architecture has changed your brain.”

Nora stared.

Alexander continued:

“You can store memories without losing your identity.”

“Like Zero.”

“Yes.”

“Then why transfer into me?”

“Because I don't want your body.”

Nora frowned.

“What do you want?”

“Your memory.”

Nora's blood ran cold.

“You want Zero.”

Alexander nodded.

“She is the key to immortality.”

Zero stepped between them.

“No.”

Alexander smiled.

“You don't get to choose.”

Zero looked at Nora.

“I do.”

Nora stared.

“What are you going to do?”

Zero reached toward Nora.

“Wake you.”

“From what?”

“From the lie.”

She touched Nora's forehead.

Everything disappeared.

Nora woke inside another memory.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby cried.

Miriam stood beside the bed.

Daniel was holding her hand.

Three babies lay in separate cribs.

Claire.

Elise.

And Nora.

Miriam looked exhausted.

Daniel whispered:

“Which one?”

Miriam shook her head.

“All three.”

Then another crib appeared.

Empty.

Daniel stared.

“Where is he?”

Miriam whispered:

“He's gone.”

“Who?”

“Alexander.”

Daniel froze.

“He took the baby?”

“No.”

Miriam looked toward the door.

“Your father did.”

Daniel's face changed.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted the boy.”

“For Project Echo?”

“Yes.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Miriam cried.

“He said the boy was the perfect vessel.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What about Nora?”

Miriam looked at the newborn.

“She is different.”

“How?”

“She can carry Zero.”

Daniel stared.

“You put Zero into her?”

Miriam nodded.

“She won't remember.”

Daniel looked horrified.

“She's a baby.”

“I know.”

“You can't.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always have a choice.”

Miriam began crying.

“If I didn't, my father would take her.”

Daniel looked at the baby.

“What happens when she grows up?”

Miriam whispered:

“She'll wake.”

Nora opened her eyes.

She was back in the white room.

Zero stood before her.

“You've remembered.”

Nora was crying.

“I was a baby.”

“Yes.”

“They put you inside me.”

“Yes.”

“My mother knew.”

“Yes.”

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

“Did Claire know?”

“No.”

“Elise?”

“No.”

“Adrian?”

“No.”

Nora wiped her tears.

“Then who knew?”

Zero looked toward the darkness.

“One person.”

“Who?”

Zero whispered:

“Alexander.”

Nora froze.

“But he was taken.”

“He wasn't taken.”

“What?”

“He volunteered.”

Nora stared.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted to protect you.”

Nora's breathing stopped.

“Then why did he become this?”

“Because they changed him.”

“How?”

Zero looked away.

“They gave him a purpose.”

“What purpose?”

“To become the guardian of Project Echo.”

Nora shook her head.

“Then why is he trying to take me?”

“He isn't.”

“What?”

Zero looked directly at her.

“The man you're fighting isn't Alexander.”

Nora froze.

“Then who?”

Zero smiled sadly.

“Your grandfather.”

Nora's blood ran cold.

“Alexander is dead?”

“Yes.”

“Then the man outside…”

“Is your grandfather wearing his memories.”

Nora stared.

“Then where is Alexander?”

Zero whispered:

“Inside you.”

Nora couldn't breathe.

“He transferred himself?”

“No.”

Zero touched her chest.

“He was transferred into you before you were born.”

Nora stepped backward.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You're saying…”

“You've been carrying your brother your entire life.”

Nora's eyes widened.

“Then the voice…”

“Yes.”

“The memories…”

“Yes.”

“The dreams…”

“Yes.”

“That was Alexander.”

Zero nodded.

“And he has been trying to wake you.”

Nora stared at the little girl.

“Why didn't he just tell me?”

“Because your grandfather would hear him.”

Nora froze.

“What?”

Zero looked toward the darkness.

“He has been listening the entire time.”

A voice echoed through the room.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Correct.”

Nora turned.

Her grandfather stepped out of the darkness.

He was no longer hiding.

He smiled.

“Hello, Nora.”

She stared.

“You're inside my mind.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because you invited me.”

“I never invited you.”

He smiled.

“You did when you remembered.”

Nora felt something cold crawl through her.

He stepped closer.

“You opened the door.”

Nora clenched her fists.

“Get out.”

“I can't.”

“Then I'll destroy you.”

“You can't destroy a memory.”

Nora looked at Zero.

Zero smiled.

“She's right.”

The grandfather frowned.

Zero continued:

“But you can destroy the system that preserves it.”

Nora understood.

The machine.

The archive.

Project Echo.

Everything was connected.

The grandfather needed Nora alive.

He needed Zero awake.

He needed Alexander's memories.

But he couldn't control Nora if she destroyed the network.

Nora looked at Zero.

“How do I get out?”

“You don't.”

“What?”

“You have to take control.”

“How?”

“Remember your first choice.”

Nora closed her eyes.

The childhood memory returned.

The machine.

Claire.

Elise.

Adrian.

Her mother.

The moment she volunteered.

She remembered something else.

A sentence she had forgotten.

She had told Miriam:

“If I forget, make sure they forget too.”

Nora opened her eyes.

She understood.

She hadn't merely volunteered to erase herself.

She had planted a command inside her own memory.

A command Project Echo could never detect.

A command only she could activate.

Nora looked at her grandfather.

“You made one mistake.”

He frowned.

“What?”

“You thought my memories belonged to you.”

She smiled.

“They don't.”

The room began shaking.

Zero stepped beside her.

Alexander's voice echoed inside Nora's mind.

“Now.”

Nora raised her hand.

Every wall shattered.

Every memory collapsed.

The grandfather screamed.

“No!”

Nora shouted:

“GET OUT OF MY HEAD!”

The white room exploded.

Nora woke on the hospital floor.

Claire was holding her.

“Nora!”

She gasped.

“What happened?”

Claire hugged her.

“You collapsed.”

Nora looked around.

The nursery was destroyed.

The six copies were unconscious.

Mara was alive.

Adrian was kneeling nearby.

Alexander was gone.

Nora looked at him.

“Where is he?”

Adrian shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Nora touched her temple.

A voice whispered inside her mind.

“I'm here.”

Nora froze.

Alexander.

But there was something different.

He sounded weak.

“Are you alive?”

“Not the way you are.”

Nora closed her eyes.

“What happened to my grandfather?”

“He lost control.”

“Where is he?”

“Gone.”

Nora opened her eyes.

“Gone where?”

Alexander answered:

“Into the network.”

Nora's heart sank.

“So he's still alive.”

“Yes.”

Adrian stood.

“We need to move.”

Nora looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because the hospital isn't safe.”

A distant explosion shook the building.

Claire grabbed Elise.

Mara pulled her mother toward the exit.

Nora stood.

Then every screen in the room came alive.

One message appeared:

PROJECT ECHO IS NOT DESTROYED.

Another:

THE NETWORK HAS MIGRATED.

Then a final message:

NEW HOST IDENTIFIED.

Nora stared.

“Who?”

The screen displayed a live image.

A hospital room.

A man lay unconscious on a bed.

Daniel.

Nora's father.

His eyes suddenly opened.

And when he spoke—

it wasn't Daniel's voice.

It was her grandfather's.

“Hello, Nora.”

Nora froze.

The screen went black.

Adrian whispered:

“He transferred.”

Nora looked at him.

“To your father.”

Nora shook her head.

“No.”

Adrian stared.

“What?”

Nora touched her temple.

Alexander's voice whispered inside her.

“That's not your father.”

Nora looked at Claire.

Claire looked terrified.

Elise slowly stepped backward.

Mara whispered:

“Then who is he?”

Nora stared at the black screen.

Her answer came quietly.

“It's a copy.”

Adrian frowned.

“Of whom?”

Nora's eyes hardened.

“Of everyone.”

The hospital alarms began screaming again.

And somewhere inside the building, hundreds of locked doors opened at once.

Project Echo had survived.

But it was no longer inside a machine.

It was inside people.

And Nora finally understood the true purpose of the project.

May you like

They hadn't wanted to control the world.

They wanted to replace it.
