The investigation uncovered something none of us expected.
It had never been about Emma's birthday.
Or my engagement.

Three years earlier, my grandmother had secretly changed her will.
Every grandchild would inherit an equal share of the family estate.
Lily's birth had reduced everyone else's inheritance.
Including Vanessa's daughter.
Detectives also discovered months of text messages between my mother and Vanessa.

The room spun.
My own mother had helped plan it.
The detective quietly closed the folder.
