Chapter 2: The Tiny Object in Her Pocket

Chapter 2: The Tiny Object in Her Pocket

The police officer looked directly at my father.

"What happened to this child?"

No one answered.

The only sound came from the ambulance crew placing oxygen over Lily's face.

My mother finally spoke.

"She likes to hide."

The officer stared at her.

"In a commercial dumpster?"

She hesitated.

"We... we thought she was playing."

Marcus stepped between them.

"You watched us pull her out."

Silence.

One paramedic carefully searched Lily's pajamas before loading her into the ambulance.

Something small slid from her pocket onto the stretcher.

A tiny white pill bottle.

Not a prescription bottle.

A travel-sized plastic container with no label.

Inside were two crushed blue tablets.

The paramedic frowned.

"Officer... you'll want to see this."

The officer immediately sealed it inside an evidence bag.

My mother's face turned pale.

Vanessa looked away.

That was the exact moment the scene stopped being a family dispute.

It became a crime scene.

At the hospital, doctors worked for nearly two hours.

Marcus refused to leave Lily's bedside.

I sat in the hallway covered in dried garbage and blood from my scraped hands.

Finally, the emergency physician approached us.

"Your daughter is going to survive."

I nearly collapsed.

"But..."

My heart stopped again.

"We found traces of a sedative in her bloodstream."

Marcus slowly stood.

"A sedative?"

The doctor nodded.

"Enough to make a child unconscious."

Someone hadn't simply abandoned my daughter.

Someone had drugged her first.

The detective arrived less than twenty minutes later.

"We're requesting search warrants for your parents' property."

I signed every paper without hesitation.

I already knew they weren't innocent.

I just didn't know how guilty they really were.
