Chapter 9 — One Last Door to Freedom

The gunshot echoed through the mansion.

Elena ran toward Noah.

"Mommy!"

His scream came from the second floor.

Daniel was right behind her.

"Elena, wait!"

She didn't.

She reached the staircase and saw Ethan standing at the top.

Noah was in his arms.

A pistol was pressed against Ethan's shoulder.

But Ethan wasn't the one holding it.

William Carter stood behind him.

His own father.

His own blood.

And for the first time, Elena saw fear in Ethan's eyes.

"Put the gun down!" Elena screamed.

William smiled.

"You're finally beginning to understand."

Ethan slowly turned.

"Dad..."

William's expression hardened.

"You failed."

"I couldn't do it."

"You had one simple task."

"He's a baby!"

"He's an asset."

Ethan looked down at Noah.

"No. He's your grandson."

William raised the gun.

"That means nothing."

Ethan moved.

The gun fired.

Daniel tackled Elena to the floor.

Lucas fired back.

The chandelier shattered.

Glass rained down.

Anna screamed.

Then everything went dark.

Elena crawled toward the stairs.

"Noah!"

A tiny cry answered.

"Mommy!"

She followed the sound.

At the top of the stairs, Ethan was lying against the wall.

Blood stained his sleeve.

But Noah was alive.

Ethan pushed the baby toward Elena.

"Take him."

Elena grabbed Noah.

She held him against her chest.

He buried his face against her neck.

For three years, she had dreamed of this moment.

Three years behind glass.

Three years of letters.

Three years of watching her child grow through photographs.

Now his tiny hands were gripping her coat.

"Mommy."

Elena began to cry.

"I'm here."

She kissed his hair.

"I'm here, baby."

Then she looked at Ethan.

"Why?"

Ethan struggled to breathe.

"I was trying to get him out."

"From my father?"

Ethan nodded.

"He threatened me."

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because he had people everywhere."

Daniel crouched beside him.

"Where is William?"

Ethan pointed toward the west wing.

"He took the archive."

Elena's expression hardened.

"No."

She stood.

"He doesn't get to erase it."

Lucas appeared behind her.

"The upload failed."

Elena turned.

"What?"

"At ninety-six percent."

Anna looked at the laptop.

"But I saved the files locally."

"Where?"

Anna smiled.

"Everywhere."

She held up her phone.

"I sent copies to six journalists."

Elena stared.

Anna continued.

"And three federal investigators."

Daniel looked relieved.

Lucas shook his head.

"Not enough."

A voice came through the mansion speakers.

William.

"You think you've won?"

Elena looked toward the ceiling.

William continued.

"You don't understand the Carter Trust."

The lights came back on.

Every television in the mansion turned on.

A document appeared.

The Carter Trust Agreement.

William's voice filled the room.

"Your son is the beneficiary."

Elena held Noah tighter.

"But the trust has a condition."

Her mother's face went pale.

"What condition?"

William laughed.

"If the beneficiary is declared legally unfit or disappears, control passes to the secondary trustees."

Elena suddenly understood.

"That's why you wanted Noah."

"Exactly."

"You wanted me imprisoned."

"Because a convicted mother has no legal authority over her child's inheritance."

Daniel whispered:

"He planned everything."

William continued.

"Your arrest was never about the three hundred thousand dollars."

Elena's eyes burned.

"It was about Noah."

"Yes."

"And the archive."

"Yes."

"And the names."

Silence.

Then William said:

"Those names can destroy governments."

Elena looked at the camera.

"Then let them fall."

William's voice became cold.

"Come to the old study."

"Why?"

"Because there is one thing you don't know."

The screen went black.

Elena looked at her mother.

Her mother shook her head.

"Don't go."

Elena looked down at Noah.

Then at Daniel.

"I'm going."

Daniel nodded.

"I'll come with you."

"No."

Elena kissed Noah's forehead.

"You stay with him."

Daniel understood.

He took Noah.

Elena walked toward the study.

Her mother followed.

Inside, the room looked exactly as Elena remembered it.

Her father's desk.

His books.

The old fireplace.

The photograph of Elena as a little girl.

William stood beside the window.

He looked almost peaceful.

"You came."

Elena stared at him.

"You destroyed my life."

"I built your life."

"You took my mother."

"I protected her."

"You framed me."

"I protected the trust."

"You used my son."

"I protected the legacy."

Elena shook her head.

"You never protected anyone."

William smiled sadly.

"You still think this is about money."

He opened a hidden drawer.

Inside was a small cassette recorder.

He pressed play.

A man's voice filled the room.

Elena recognized it immediately.

Her father's voice.

But it was younger.

"Elizabeth, if you're hearing this, I failed."

Elena's mother covered her mouth.

William stopped the recording.

Elena stared.

"That's you."

William nodded.

"The man you knew died twelve years ago."

"What?"

"I became someone else."

Elena's mother stepped forward.

"You promised me you'd destroy it."

"I tried."

"Then why?"

William looked at her.

"Because they threatened Elena."

Elena froze.

"What?"

William looked at his daughter.

"Your mother's disappearance was the beginning."

"Then why did you fake your death?"

"Because the people behind the network were hunting us."

"Who?"

William slowly removed a second photograph from the drawer.

Elena looked at it.

Six men stood around a table.

One was Voss.

One was Judge Cross.

One was a senator.

One was the foundation director.

One was a police commissioner.

And the sixth—

was a man Elena had never seen.

But her mother did.

She gasped.

"No."

William whispered:

"He is the real architect."

Elena stared at the photograph.

"Who is he?"

Her mother looked at her.

"Your father's older brother."

Elena's eyes widened.

"I thought he died."

"So did everyone."

William nodded.

"He disappeared before you were born."

"Why?"

"Because he created the network."

Elena looked at the photograph again.

"What is his name?"

William answered.

"Richard Carter."

Suddenly—

the study door opened.

Ethan stumbled inside.

"He's here."

Everyone turned.

William's face changed.

"What?"

Ethan pointed toward the hallway.

"Richard."

The mansion doors slammed shut.

The sound of locks engaging echoed through the house.

Then a man's voice came from the darkness.

"William."

William went pale.

Richard Carter stepped into the doorway.

He looked almost identical to William.

Except his eyes were empty.

Elena moved backward.

Richard smiled.

"Hello, niece."

Then he looked at Noah.

"And hello, heir."

Elena stepped between them.

Richard's smile widened.

"Now we can finally finish what your grandfather started."

Elena stared at him.

"You're not taking my son."

Richard raised a gun.

"Then you will have to stop me."

And somewhere outside—

sirens began approaching.

The evidence had already escaped.

The truth was already spreading.

But Elena knew one thing.

May you like

Before freedom—

there was one final fight.
