Chapter 8 — The Man Who Framed Her

The Carter estate had been abandoned for eleven years.

Yet every light was on.

Elena saw the mansion from the hill.

White stone.

Black windows.

Iron gates.

A house that had once represented everything her family owned.

Now it looked like a tomb.

Daniel stopped the car.

Lucas checked the weapon in his hand.

Anna sat in the back seat beside Elena's mother.

Nobody spoke.

Then Elena saw movement near the upstairs window.

A small silhouette.

Her heart broke.

"Noah."

Daniel looked up.

The curtains moved.

A tiny hand appeared against the glass.

Elena nearly opened the door.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"Wait."

"That's my son."

"I know."

"I can see him."

"And that's exactly what they want."

Elena looked at him.

Daniel pointed toward the driveway.

Three black SUVs were hidden behind the trees.

Security cameras covered the gates.

"This isn't a rescue."

Elena stared at the mansion.

"It's a trap."

Lucas nodded.

"Exactly."

Anna pulled out a laptop.

"I can disable the cameras for ninety seconds."

Elena looked at her.

"That's enough."

"No," Daniel said.

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at Elena.

"We don't go through the front."

He pulled a folded blueprint from his jacket.

"There's a tunnel."

Elena stared at the drawing.

"Under the house?"

"Your father built it."

Her mother's face changed.

"You knew?"

Daniel nodded.

"He showed me once."

Elena looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because he knew someone would eventually come for the trust."

Her mother whispered:

"He knew."

Daniel nodded.

"He knew everything."

Elena's heart pounded.

"Then my father wasn't protecting the family."

"No."

Daniel looked toward the mansion.

"He was protecting the people who owned it."

The words hit harder than any slap.

They entered through the tunnel.

Twenty minutes later, they emerged beneath the wine cellar.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Elena moved upstairs.

She heard Noah crying.

"Mommy!"

She nearly broke.

She ran toward his voice.

Daniel caught her.

"Elena."

She stopped.

The crying continued.

"Mommy!"

Elena covered her mouth.

"He's scared."

"I know."

They reached the nursery.

The door was open.

The crib was empty.

Elena froze.

Then a speaker clicked on.

Ethan's voice filled the room.

"You always were predictable."

Elena turned.

A screen came alive.

Ethan appeared.

He was holding Noah.

The baby was crying against his chest.

Elena's blood boiled.

"Put him down."

Ethan smiled.

"Still giving orders."

"Where are you?"

"Somewhere you won't reach."

Elena stepped toward the screen.

"You work for Voss."

Ethan laughed.

"Voss?"

He shook his head.

"Voss works for me."

Silence.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Ethan's smile disappeared.

"You really thought Harold Voss was the mastermind?"

He leaned closer.

"He couldn't organize a dinner reservation without permission."

Elena felt sick.

"Then who?"

Ethan looked at her.

"You already met him."

Elena frowned.

"No."

"Your father."

The room went silent.

Elena's mother closed her eyes.

Ethan continued.

"Your father didn't die."

Elena whispered:

"Stop."

"He disappeared."

"Stop."

"He built the network."

"You're lying."

"He created the foundation."

"Stop!"

"He created the trust."

Elena's mother began crying.

Ethan smiled.

"And he created the system that made your mother disappear."

Elena turned toward her mother.

"Is it true?"

Her mother couldn't answer.

That was the answer.

Elena staggered backward.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Ethan."

Ethan looked at him.

"You should be ashamed."

Daniel's face hardened.

"You took a child."

"I protected him."

"You kidnapped him."

"I saved him from the people who want him dead."

Elena looked at Noah.

Her son was exhausted.

His cheeks were wet with tears.

"Please."

Her voice broke.

"Ethan, please."

For the first time, Ethan's expression softened.

"You really love him."

"He's my son."

"I know."

"Then bring him back."

Ethan looked down at Noah.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because your father is coming."

Elena froze.

The screen went black.

Then every light in the mansion turned off.

The doors locked.

Alarms began screaming.

Lucas shouted:

"Move!"

Gunfire erupted outside.

The team scattered.

Elena grabbed her mother.

Daniel pulled Anna behind a wall.

Lucas ran toward the security room.

A voice came through the speakers.

An old man's voice.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

"Elena."

She stopped breathing.

She knew that voice.

She had heard it in childhood.

At bedtime.

At the dinner table.

On the phone.

In her dreams.

"Sweetheart."

Her mother collapsed into a chair.

Elena whispered:

"Dad?"

The speaker crackled.

"Yes."

Elena's knees almost gave out.

"You're alive."

A pause.

"Of course I am."

"Where is Noah?"

"Safe."

"Bring him to me."

"I will."

"Now."

The voice became colder.

"After you give me the trust."

Elena stared at the speaker.

"What trust?"

"The original Carter Trust."

"It's already in Noah's name."

"Exactly."

Elena suddenly understood.

He didn't want the money.

He wanted Noah.

Because Noah's existence controlled the trust.

"If Noah dies—"

Her father interrupted.

"He doesn't have to die."

Elena's blood ran cold.

"He only has to disappear."

She looked at her mother.

Her mother whispered:

"If Noah disappears before he turns eighteen, the secondary trustees take control."

Elena understood.

Her father had created the entire structure.

The foundation.

The trustees.

The network.

The disappearances.

The forged identities.

And when Elena discovered the truth—

he framed her.

Not Voss.

Not Cross.

Not even Ethan.

Her own father.

Elena looked at Daniel.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I tried."

"When?"

"Before your arrest."

"Then why did you stay silent?"

"Because he threatened Noah."

Elena stared.

Daniel continued.

"He told me that if I spoke, Noah would disappear forever."

Elena looked at the screen.

Her father's voice returned.

"You see, Elena, I never wanted you in prison."

"You framed me."

"I needed you contained."

"You destroyed my life."

"I protected my legacy."

"You destroyed my family."

Silence.

Then her father said:

"You were always too emotional to understand."

Elena's face hardened.

"No."

She stepped toward the speaker.

"I understand perfectly."

She pulled the black notebook from her coat.

"I understand every name."

Her father's voice changed.

"What?"

"I understand every payment."

Silence.

"Every child."

Another silence.

"And every person you erased."

Elena smiled through tears.

"You made one mistake."

"What?"

"You taught your daughter how to keep records."

She held up the flash drive.

"I copied everything."

Her father laughed.

"You think a flash drive can destroy me?"

"No."

Elena looked toward Lucas.

Lucas held up his phone.

"The entire archive is already uploading."

Her father's silence was immediate.

Elena continued.

"Every judge."

"Every politician."

"Every payment."

"Every child."

"Every forged identity."

"And your name."

The speaker crackled.

Then—

her father's voice became furious.

"Kill the connection."

Outside, guards began running.

Anna shouted from the hallway.

"The upload is at eighty-seven percent!"

Lucas yelled:

"Ninety-one!"

Daniel grabbed Elena's hand.

"We need to go."

"No."

She looked at the nursery.

"Noah is still here."

Then a door opened upstairs.

Footsteps.

Someone was coming.

Elena raised the weapon.

The footsteps stopped.

A man appeared at the end of the hallway.

Old.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Wearing a dark suit.

Elena stared at him.

She had seen that face thousands of times.

In photographs.

In dreams.

In the memories of a little girl who had believed her father was dead.

Her father looked at her.

And smiled.

"Hello, Elena."

She couldn't move.

Her mother whispered:

"William."

William Carter looked at the woman he had abandoned.

Then at his grandson.

And finally at the red folder in Elena's hand.

"Give me the evidence."

Elena tightened her grip.

"No."

William's smile disappeared.

"Then your son dies."

A gunshot exploded from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Then came Noah's scream.

"Mommy!"

Elena ran.

May you like

This time—

nothing could stop her.
