Chapter 15 - THE BIRTHDAY MEETING

Noah turned thirteen beneath the white lights of a hospital room.

Evelyn brought him a chocolate cake.

Dr. Shah found thirteen mismatched candles from the nurses’ station.

Detective Ortiz gave him a chess set.

Arthur Bell brought the papers activating Daniel’s trust.

At 9:07 a.m., Noah signed the confirmation.

Daniel Whitmore’s controlling shares passed into the protected trust.

Noah appointed Arthur as independent trustee.

He also named Evelyn as his permanent guardian.

For the first time, Julian could no longer inherit through Noah’s death.

But he could still control the company if the board elected him chairman.

Whitmore Global’s emergency shareholder meeting began at noon.

More than three hundred investors, directors, attorneys, and journalists filled the Manhattan auditorium.

Julian arrived through a private entrance.

His left hand was bandaged.

He told reporters he had been hiding because Victoria and Graham tried to frame him.

He blamed Charles for the financial crimes.

He described Daniel’s crash as a tragedy exploited by a dishonest housekeeper.

Evelyn watched the broadcast from a van beneath the building.

Noah sat beside her.

He wore a navy suit Daniel had purchased years earlier, expecting his son to grow into it.

Arthur adjusted the sleeves that morning.

“You don’t need to do this,” Evelyn said.

“Yes, I do.”

“You don’t owe the public your pain.”

“No.”

Noah looked at the auditorium entrance.

“But they owe the truth to everyone my family stole from.”

Detective Ortiz’s team entered the building disguised as security personnel.

Federal agents waited nearby with warrants.

The evidence locker was located three floors beneath the auditorium.

Charles’s key opened the first gate.

Daniel’s brass key opened the second.

Noah’s voice opened the final door.

Inside was the original cockpit audio recording.

The government investigators who handled the crash had received an edited copy.

Daniel had secretly installed an independent recorder after discovering unusual maintenance activity.

The complete audio captured the final eleven minutes.

It recorded Daniel realizing the hydraulic system was failing.

It recorded the pilot attempting an emergency landing.

And it recorded Noah crying in the background.

Before the crash, Daniel spoke directly into the device.

“Julian sabotaged the plane.”

Then another voice came through Daniel’s phone.

Julian had called him.

“You should have signed the company over when I asked.”

Daniel replied, “Noah will stop you.”

Julian laughed.

“Then Noah will join you.”

The recording was absolute proof.

But when Ortiz attempted to remove it, the underground doors locked.

Julian appeared on the security monitor.

“I knew Charles would betray me eventually.”

He had overridden the building controls.

Gas began entering the hallway.

The same method Graham used inside the vault.

This time, Noah was prepared.

He connected his tablet to the building system using access codes from Daniel’s drive.

Julian attempted to block him.

Noah rerouted the ventilation.

The gas reversed direction.

It entered the private elevator carrying Julian toward the basement.

Julian stopped the elevator between floors.

He escaped through the roof hatch.

Meanwhile, Evelyn and Ortiz reached the auditorium.

Julian’s attorney was nominating him as chairman.

The audience applauded.

Evelyn walked onto the stage.

Julian emerged from a side door behind her.

His face was pale.

“Remove that woman,” he ordered.

Noah rolled into the auditorium.

The applause stopped.

Cameras turned.

Julian stared at him.

“You should be in the hospital.”

“You should be in prison.”

Noah connected his tablet to the main screen.

Daniel’s cockpit recording played across the auditorium.

No one moved.

Daniel’s final accusation filled the room.

Julian sabotaged the plane.

Then Julian’s voice promised to kill Noah.

Directors began standing.

Reporters rushed toward the stage.

Federal agents moved through the doors.

Julian grabbed Evelyn.

A blade appeared against her throat.

“Turn it off,” he told Noah.

The recording continued.

Noah’s finger hovered over the controls.

Julian pressed the blade harder.

“You saved him from the fire,” he whispered to Evelyn.

“Let’s see whether he saves you.”
