Chapter 10 - THE VAULT
The gas smelled sweet.
Detective Ortiz recognized it immediately.
“Anesthetic.”
Everyone covered their mouths.
Ortiz fired at the ceiling vents, but the metal grates were reinforced.
The vault door had no internal handle.
Graham appeared on the security monitor outside.
He held Victoria by the arm.
Her wrists were bound.
Blood darkened the side of her face.
“You thought she was running,” Graham said.
“She was.”
Victoria struggled.
“He killed Julian.”
Graham smiled.
“Julian is difficult to kill.”
He demanded Daniel’s drive and the original trust document.
In return, he promised to open the vault.
“No,” Noah said.
Evelyn looked at him.
“We don’t have much time.”
“He’ll kill us once he has them.”
Graham leaned toward the camera.
“The boy is finally learning.”
Noah studied the room.
Charles built the vault to survive fire, flooding, and armed attacks.
It would also have an emergency system.
He rolled toward the computer servers.
“Dad used to make me solve escape-room puzzles,” he said.
“He told me rich men always build secret exits because they’re more afraid than everyone else.”
Arthur searched the walls.
Ortiz examined the floor.
Evelyn opened the cabinet containing Daniel’s files.
Behind the lowest drawer, she found a narrow service panel.
The brass key fit the lock.
Inside was a manual ventilation lever.
She pulled it.
Fresh air entered from beneath the floor.
The gas stopped spreading.
Graham’s smile vanished.
Noah located the emergency communications system.
He connected Daniel’s drive to the central server.
Arthur understood his plan.
“You can upload everything.”
Noah nodded.
“Not just to the police.”
The vault stored contact information for board members, journalists, regulators, and government officials Charles had monitored.
Noah selected all of them.
Graham began entering override codes.
The vault door would open in ninety seconds.
Noah started the upload.
The progress bar moved slowly.
Ten percent.
Fifteen.
Twenty.
Graham placed his gun against Victoria’s head.
“Stop the transfer.”
Victoria stared into the camera.
For years, she had treated Noah as an inconvenience.
Now her life depended on him.
“Noah,” she whispered.
He looked at her.
“Did you help kill my father?”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Evelyn felt the admission like a physical blow.
Victoria admitted she knew Julian planned to sabotage the plane.
She believed the aircraft would never leave the runway.
When it took off, she realized Julian had changed the plan.
After the crash, she stayed silent because inheriting Daniel’s wealth benefited her.
“And the mansion fire?” Noah asked.
“I helped trap you.”
“Why?”
“Julian said you had recovered your memory.”
“You could have stopped him.”
“I was afraid.”
Noah’s voice remained quiet.
“So was I.”
The upload reached fifty percent.
Graham entered the final override sequence.
Detective Ortiz positioned herself beside the door.
Evelyn pulled Noah behind a steel cabinet.
Arthur switched off the lights.
The vault opened.
Graham fired into the darkness.
Ortiz returned fire.
Victoria dropped to the floor.
Graham entered, searching for Noah.
Evelyn threw a metal file box toward the opposite wall.
Graham turned toward the sound.
Noah drove his wheelchair forward and struck the back of Graham’s knees.
The security chief fell.
Ortiz kicked the gun from his hand and pinned him against the floor.
Graham tried to reach a second weapon.
Victoria grabbed it first.
She aimed at him.
“Don’t,” Ortiz warned.
Victoria’s finger tightened on the trigger.
Noah spoke from behind her.
“If you shoot him, you’re doing it for yourself.”
Victoria looked back.
For one second, shame appeared on her face.
Then Graham laughed.
“He still thinks you can be saved.”
Victoria lowered the gun.
Ortiz handcuffed Graham.
The upload reached one hundred percent.
Across the country, journalists and regulators received Charles Whitmore’s secrets.
The family’s empire began collapsing before they left the building.
But one file failed to upload.
It had been encrypted separately.
Its title contained only a date.
The date of Noah’s plane crash.
When Arthur opened it, they found medical photographs taken immediately after Noah’s rescue.
One image showed an injury that did not appear in the official hospital report.
A needle mark beneath Noah’s ear.
