Chapter 4 — The Man in the Gray Coat

The mystery lasted three days.

By then Waverly Pacific Foods had lost nearly half its market value.

The board suspended Grant indefinitely.

Federal investigators requested financial records.

Sponsors disappeared overnight.

Then I received an envelope with no return address.

Inside was a single hotel keycard.

Room 1714.

Bellmont Hotel.

Curiosity outweighed caution.

When I entered the room, an older man stood beside the window wearing a simple gray coat.

He introduced himself.

"My name is Daniel Mercer."

The name meant nothing to me.

Until he smiled.

"I built the security system for this hotel fifteen years ago."

He slid a tablet across the table.

"It records everything."

I looked at him.

"Why help me?"

His eyes became distant.

"My daughter once worked for Grant."

He paused.

"She took her own life after reporting one of his executives."

Silence settled between us.

"I couldn't save her."

He looked at me with quiet conviction.

"But I could save someone else's daughter."

He had watched Grant for years.

Collected evidence.

Archived conversations.

Stored financial records.

The birthday party had simply become the moment he had been waiting for.

"I never expected you to fight back," he admitted.

"You only had to survive long enough for the truth to speak."

I reached across the table.

For the first time since my birthday...

I cried.

Not because I had lost.

Because someone I had never met had refused to let evil become invisible.
