Rodrigo slowly turned toward his mother.
"Is this true?"
Elvira couldn't answer.
Instead, Mariana revealed one final envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter from Rodrigo's late father.
"If you are reading this," Mariana read aloud, "it means I am gone. Mariana saved our family. She never asked for recognition. She only asked for respect."
Several relatives lowered their heads.
One aunt quietly wiped away tears.
The letter continued.
"Elvira, if you ever treat her as less than family, you will dishonor everything I tried to build."
Doña Elvira collapsed into a chair.
She had spent years calling Mariana a gold digger.
Yet it was Mariana's money that had saved their home.
Rodrigo's voice broke.
"I'm sorry."
Mariana looked at him for a long moment.
"You were never silent because you wanted peace."
"You were silent because it was easier."
He had no answer.
