PART 2

Mariana opened the blue folder and placed the first document in front of Rodrigo.

It was the deed to the house.

The owner wasn't Rodrigo.

It wasn't Doña Elvira.

It was Mariana.

"I bought this house eighteen months before our wedding," she said calmly. "When your father's business failed, the bank was preparing to seize it."

Gasps spread across the patio.

Rodrigo stared at the signature.

His father had begged Mariana not to tell anyone.

"He didn't want his family to know he had lost everything," Mariana continued. "So I paid off the debt. We signed a private agreement. He promised to repay me when the business recovered."

She slid another document onto the table.

Bank transfers.

Mortgage payments.

Property taxes.

Every payment came from Mariana's account.

Doña Elvira grabbed the papers.

"These are fake!"

Mariana quietly handed her the notarized copies.

"They've already been verified."

The older woman's hands began to shake.

Rodrigo looked completely speechless.

"You knew?" he whispered.

"I promised your father I would protect his dignity," Mariana replied.

"But I never promised I would let everyone destroy mine."

Silence filled the patio.

For the first time in years, nobody defended Doña Elvira.
