CHAPTER 3 — The Son Who Chose His Mother

Javier surrendered two days later.
He entered the police station wearing an expensive suit.
Confident.
Smiling.
His attorney spoke first.
"My client never touched his wife."
Technically...
That was true.
He hadn't struck Sofia.
He had simply arranged for others to do it.
Prosecutors played the hallway surveillance video.
Javier standing outside.
Checking his phone.
Ignoring the screams.
Then they played an audio recording.
Not from the hotel.
From Sofia's phone.
She had accidentally activated the voice recorder while trying to call me.
The room fell silent.
Carmen's voice echoed through the speakers.
"Sign it."
Slap.
"You belong to this family now."
Slap.
"You own nothing."
Another slap.
Then Javier's voice.
"Mama...
don't bruise her face too much."
His lawyer slowly lowered his pen.
There was nothing left to argue.
Javier finally looked at Sofia.
"I'm sorry."
She stared back.
"No."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I love you."
Sofia stood.
"If you loved me..."
"You would've opened that door."
She walked out without looking back.
Three months later...
The trial began.
Every witness testified.
Hotel employees.
Doctors.
Police officers.
Domestic violence specialists.
The woman from Javier's previous marriage.
Even one of Carmen's own relatives.
The jury deliberated less than four hours.
Guilty.
On every major charge.
Attempted coercion.
Conspiracy.
Assault.
Fraud.
Witness intimidation.
As deputies led Carmen away...
She turned toward Sofia one last time.
"You ruined this family."
Sofia answered quietly.
May you like
"No."
"You did."
