CHAPTER 1 — A Father Who Never Forgot

Alexander remained on his knees beside Sofia for a long time.

He studied every bruise.

Every fingerprint on her arms.

The torn lace hanging from her wedding dress.

When he finally stood, his expression was frighteningly calm.

"Did they make you sign anything?"

Sofia shook her head.

"No."

"Good."

His voice carried none of the warmth it once had.

Only calculation.

He turned toward me.

"Take pictures."

I blinked.

"What?"

"Every bruise. Every cut. Every torn piece of clothing."

He looked directly at Sofia.

"And don't wash your face."

She stared at him in confusion.

"I know exactly how people like Carmen survive," he said quietly.

"They erase evidence before anyone can ask questions."

For the next hour we documented everything.

Photographs.

Videos.

Voice recordings.

Medical notes describing every injury.

Alexander insisted we leave immediately for the emergency room.

The physician examined Sofia carefully.

Multiple facial contusions.

Bruised ribs.

A mild concussion.

Defensive wounds on both forearms.

The doctor looked horrified.

"Who did this?"

Sofia hesitated.

Alexander answered for her.

"Her husband's family."

The doctor nodded without another word.

He quietly contacted the hospital's domestic violence advocate.

By sunrise, an officer arrived.

Sofia froze.

"They'll kill me."

Alexander crouched beside her.

"No."

His voice was steady.

"They only had power while you believed they did."

"You aren't alone anymore."

For the first time since she'd arrived at my apartment...

Sofia agreed to tell the truth.

Every slap.

Every insult.

Every threat.

Every name.

The officer recorded every word.

When the interview ended, Alexander made one more phone call.

"I need every surveillance camera from the Grand Regency Hotel."

He listened.

"I don't care what it costs."

Another pause.

"I own half the construction company that renovated that hotel."

"I know exactly who signs their contracts."

He ended the call.

I stared at him.

"You planned that."

"I planned nothing."

He buttoned his jacket.

"But Carmen just picked the wrong family."

By noon...

The honeymoon suite had already become a crime scene.

Police officers collected fingerprints.

Broken jewelry.

Blood stains on the bathroom floor.

Hotel staff quietly admitted they had heard screaming.

One housekeeper confessed she had seen Javier standing outside the room while his mother entered with several women.

She remembered him smiling.

That testimony alone changed everything.

Meanwhile...

Across town...

Carmen was hosting brunch.

She laughed with relatives.

Complained that Sofia had "overreacted."

Claimed the young bride had run away because she wasn't mature enough for marriage.

Then her phone rang.

Her smile disappeared.

"What?"

Silence.

"What do you mean the police are asking for me?"

She laughed nervously.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

The officer on the other end simply replied,

"Mrs. Alvarez...

we have surveillance footage we'd like you to explain."

May you like

For the first time...

Carmen felt fear.
