CHAPTER 18 — THE BLOODLINE WAR

The black car disappeared into the darkness.

But Ethan Caldwell could still see Daniel Ashford's face.

That calm smile.

That confidence.

The expression of a man who believed he had already won.

"My granddaughter."

Two words.

But they changed everything.

Ethan stood frozen in the study.

The letter from his father remained open in his hands.

The warning.

The secrets.

The impossible connection.

Everything pointed back to one question.

How could Lily belong to the Ashford family?

She was his daughter.

That part was undeniable.

But Daniel Ashford claiming her as his granddaughter meant there was another truth buried beneath everything.

A truth even Ethan didn't know.

"Helena."

His voice was low.

"Tell me."

The older woman looked at him.

"Ethan..."

"No."

He shook his head.

"No more protecting me."

A pause.

"No more deciding what I can handle."

His eyes hardened.

"I want the truth."

Helena sat down slowly.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a grandmother who had carried too many secrets.

"Your father knew Alexander Voss before you were born."

Ethan frowned.

"I know."

"No."

Helena looked at him.

"You don't know how close they were."

She opened another drawer in the desk.

Inside was an old photograph.

Three people.

Ethan's father.

Alexander Voss.

And a young woman.

Ethan immediately recognized her.

"Who is she?"

Helena hesitated.

"Her name was Clara Voss."

Ethan stared.

"Alexander's daughter?"

"Yes."

Helena continued.

"Before Alexander became your family's enemy, Clara and your father were close."

"How close?"

A silence.

"Very close."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"Are you saying..."

Helena nodded.

"Your father loved her."

The room went silent.

Because Ethan suddenly understood.

The secrets weren't twenty years old.

They went back further.

Much further.

"Then what happened?"

Helena looked at the photograph.

"Your grandfather rejected the relationship."

"Why?"

"Because he wanted a strategic marriage."

Ethan clenched his jaw.

"Power."

"Yes."

"Always power."

Helena continued.

"Clara disappeared after that."

"Everyone believed she left."

"But?"

Helena looked at him.

"She was pregnant."

Ethan felt the air leave the room.

Another child.

Another hidden bloodline.

Another secret.

"With my father's child?"

Helena nodded.

"Yes."

The pieces began moving.

The mysterious DNA report.

The missing heir.

Daniel's obsession.

The hidden child.

But Ethan still didn't understand.

"Then why does Daniel say Lily is his granddaughter?"

Helena looked at him.

"Because Clara was Daniel's daughter."

Ethan froze.

Wait.

Clara Voss.

Alexander's daughter.

His father's lost love.

If Clara was Lily's grandmother...

Then Lily's mother...

"No."

Ethan whispered.

Because suddenly he understood the connection.

Rosa.

His mind raced.

The timing.

The secrecy.

The reason Alexander had been watching.

Rosa entered the doorway.

She had heard enough to know something was wrong.

"Ethan?"

He turned.

And for the first time...

He looked afraid.

Not for himself.

For her.

For Lily.

"What happened?"

Rosa asked.

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Because he knew.

The next words could change her entire life.

"Rosa..."

She stepped closer.

"What?"

He looked at her.

"Your family."

A pause.

"Tell me about your parents."

Rosa frowned.

"My parents?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I need to know."

Rosa looked confused.

"My mother died when I was young."

"And your father?"

Her expression changed.

"I never knew him."

Silence.

Ethan felt his heartbeat increase.

"Never?"

She shook her head.

"My mother never talked about him."

Helena looked at Ethan.

Both understood.

The possibility.

The terrifying possibility.

"No."

Rosa whispered.

She saw their faces.

"What are you thinking?"

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was too dangerous to say.

Then...

The door opened.

Marcus entered quickly.

"Ethan."

He stopped when he saw Rosa.

"What happened?"

Marcus looked serious.

"We found Clara Voss."

Everyone froze.

Ethan turned.

"She's alive?"

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

"Where?"

Marcus handed him a file.

"Boston."

A pause.

"But there is something else."

"What?"

Marcus looked at Rosa.

"She has been looking for her granddaughter for years."

Rosa's face went pale.

"Granddaughter?"

Marcus nodded.

"And according to the records..."

He looked at Ethan.

"The granddaughter's name is Lily."

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because the impossible had just become real.

Lily wasn't only Ethan's daughter.

She wasn't only connected to the Caldwell family.

She was the last surviving link between two powerful bloodlines.

Caldwell.

And Voss.

Before anyone could speak...

The mansion lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A second later...

The security alarms activated.

Marcus immediately reached for his phone.

"Someone breached the property."

Ethan's instincts took over.

"Where is Lily?"

Rosa's face changed.

She ran.

"Ethan!"

They rushed upstairs.

The bedroom door was open.

The window was broken.

The room was empty.

On the floor...

A small stuffed rabbit lay abandoned.

Button.

Next to it...

A single note.

Ethan picked it up.

Three words.

Written in black ink.

"Bring me my heir."

Rosa collapsed emotionally.

"My baby..."

Ethan caught her before she fell.

But his own face had become something nobody had ever seen before.

Not anger.

Not fear.

War.

Marcus checked the security footage.

"There was only one person."

"Who?"

Marcus looked at the screen.

A figure walking through the mansion.

A familiar face.

A face Ethan never expected.

The camera zoomed closer.

Ethan stared.

Because the person who took Lily...

Was not Daniel Ashford.

Was not Alexander Voss.

Was not an enemy.

It was someone they trusted.

Someone who had stood beside them through everything.

Someone who knew exactly where Lily slept.

The screen showed the face.

And Ethan whispered:

"No..."

Because the person responsible was the one person he thought would never betray him.

Victoria Haynes.

But before Ethan could react...

A message appeared on the security monitor.

A video began playing.

Victoria sat in a dark room.

Holding Lily.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

"Ethan..."

She looked directly into the camera.

"I know what this looks like."

A pause.

"But you need to understand..."

Her voice broke.

"I didn't take Lily."

Someone behind the camera stepped forward.

Victoria looked terrified.

And Ethan heard a man's voice.

A voice he recognized.

"You should have listened to me twenty years ago."

Ethan froze.

Because that voice belonged to the man who started everything.

Alexander Voss.

The war had begun.

And this time...

The battlefield was not a company.

Not a courtroom.

May you like

Not an empire.

It was a little girl's life.
