CHAPTER 13 — THE WOMAN WHO CARRIED THE TRUTH

The video ended.
But nobody moved.
The screen went black.
Yet Ethan still stared at it as if his father's face might return.
As if another sentence might appear.
As if twenty years of unanswered questions could somehow be fixed in a few seconds.
But the room remained silent.
Because the truth had arrived.
And sometimes the truth did not bring peace.
Sometimes it destroyed the last thing people were holding onto.
Hope.
Ethan slowly turned toward Helena.
His grandmother looked different.
Not like the powerful woman who had controlled the Caldwell empire for decades.
Not like the woman whose name made executives sit straighter.
She looked like someone who had spent twenty years carrying a weight too heavy for one person.
"Explain."
One word.
Cold.
Final.
Helena closed her eyes.
"I loved your father."
Ethan's expression did not change.
"That wasn't my question."
A pause.
"Did you know who killed him?"
The room waited.
Even Richard.
Even Evelyn.
Everyone.
Because after decades of secrets...
The answer belonged to Helena.
"I knew someone wanted him silenced."
Helena's voice was barely above a whisper.
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"That is not the same thing."
"No."
She looked at him.
"It isn't."
"Then tell me the truth."
Helena looked at Lily.
At the little girl standing beside Rosa.
The child who had become the reason every hidden secret was finally coming to light.
Then she looked back at Ethan.
"I knew your father was in danger."
Silence.
"But I didn't know how far they would go."
Ethan took a step closer.
"Who?"
Helena didn't answer.
And that hesitation was worse than any confession.
Because Ethan already knew.
Someone powerful.
Someone protected.
Someone close.
"Who?"
This time his voice was louder.
Helena whispered:
"Your mother."
The room exploded into silence.
Rosa covered her mouth.
Richard looked away.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
And Ethan...
Ethan simply stood there.
Unable to understand the words.
Unable to accept them.
"My mother?"
Helena nodded slowly.
"Your mother knew about the financial crimes."
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
"She knew."
"No."
His voice cracked slightly.
"My mother loved my father."
Helena looked at him with sadness.
"Love does not stop people from making terrible choices."
Ethan stepped back.
His entire life was shifting.
His father.
His mother.
His family.
Everything he believed.
Everything he built himself around.
Gone.
Rosa watched him carefully.
She wanted to comfort him.
But she knew Ethan.
He needed the truth before he needed comfort.
He had spent his whole life surrounded by people who protected him with lies.
Rosa refused to become another person who hid things from him.
"Why?"
Ethan finally asked.
"Why would my mother do that?"
Helena shook her head.
"She didn't plan his death."
Everyone looked surprised.
"Then what are you saying?"
"Your mother was being manipulated."
Ethan frowned.
"By who?"
Helena looked at Richard.
And this time...
Richard did not deny it.
"You."
Ethan stared at his uncle.
Richard remained silent.
"Richard?"
The older man looked exhausted.
"I never wanted your father dead."
"But you created the situation."
Richard looked down.
"Yes."
The confession was worse than Ethan expected.
Because betrayal was easier to understand when it came from an enemy.
Not family.
Not someone who held him as a child.
Not someone who promised to protect him.
Richard spoke quietly.
"Your father was going to destroy the Caldwell name."
Ethan's eyes hardened.
"No."
"He was going to expose decades of corruption."
"Yes."
"Thousands of employees would have lost everything."
Ethan looked at him.
"So you chose the company over him."
Richard had no answer.
Because that was exactly what he did.
Evelyn stepped forward.
"And that is why I left."
Everyone looked at her.
"I knew the family would choose power over people."
She looked at Ethan.
"I thought you would become the same."
Ethan held Lily's hand.
"I almost did."
Evelyn looked surprised.
He continued:
"Until her."
He looked at his daughter.
"Lily changed everything."
The moment was interrupted by Ethan's phone.
A message.
From an unknown number.
Everyone became tense.
Ethan opened it.
A photograph appeared.
A woman.
A hospital room.
A date.
Twenty years ago.
Then a message:
"Your mother wasn't the only person hiding the truth."
Another photo appeared.
This time...
A young Helena.
Standing beside a man Ethan didn't recognize.
A man holding documents.
Below the picture was a name.
Nathaniel Ashford.
Ethan frowned.
"Ashford?"
Rosa immediately understood.
The same Ashford family from the gala.
The same family connected to the locket.
The same family that claimed Lily's necklace belonged to them.
Another empire.
Another secret.
Another connection.
Helena's face changed.
"You need to stop."
Ethan looked at her.
"What?"
"Looking."
A pause.
"Some truths destroy everything."
Ethan looked at Lily.
Then Rosa.
Then back at Helena.
"Everything was already destroyed."
His voice became firm.
"Now I want to know why."
Meanwhile...
Across the city...
A man watched the news.
The Caldwell scandal was spreading everywhere.
He smiled.
Because everything was happening exactly as planned.
The Caldwell family was collapsing.
The secrets were coming out.
And soon...
The world would learn the final truth.
He opened an old file.
Inside was a birth certificate.
A photograph.
And one sentence written by hand:
"The true heir was never Ethan Caldwell."
Back at the mansion...
Ethan received another message.
This time...
A video.
He pressed play.
A woman appeared.
Someone he had not seen in years.
His mother.
But she looked terrified.
The recording began.
"Ethan..."
Her voice trembled.
"If you are seeing this..."
She took a shaky breath.
"Then Helena finally told you enough."
Ethan froze.
Because his mother knew.
She knew the truth would eventually come.
The video continued.
"I need you to understand one thing."
A pause.
"I did not betray your father."
Another pause.
"But I know who did."
The screen flickered.
Then his mother's final words appeared.
"The person who killed your father is someone you trust."
The video ended.
Everyone looked at Ethan.
Because there was only one question left.
Who?
May you like
And when Ethan discovered the answer...
It would destroy the last remaining piece of the Caldwell family.
