PART 4 — One Year Later

PART 4 — One Year Later
A year passed.
The bruise disappeared.
The memory never did.
I moved into a new apartment overlooking the Chicago River.
My career continued to grow.
I laughed again.
I trusted myself again.
Most importantly, I never questioned my own worth again.
One Saturday morning, while making breakfast for myself, I caught my reflection in the kitchen window.
No fear.
No hesitation.
Just peace.
The phone buzzed with a message from my father.
Proud of you.
I smiled.
Not because I had survived.
Because I had refused to become the person they wanted me to be.
Sometimes people think strength is staying.
Sometimes they think forgiveness means forgetting.
They are wrong.
Real strength is recognizing the first act of abuse...
...and deciding it will also be the last.
I lost a husband after twenty-four hours.
But I found something infinitely more valuable.
May you like
Myself.
