PART 3 — Their Perfect Image Began to Crack

PART 3 — Their Perfect Image Began to Crack

By the next morning, the story they had created was already falling apart.

According to Preston, I had suffered an emotional breakdown.

According to Eleanor, I had attacked the family without reason.

According to Morgan, I was unstable.

Unfortunately for them, facts are stubborn things.

The urgent care records existed.

The photographs existed.

The security camera outside the dining room had captured me arriving unharmed and leaving with a bright red mark across my face.

Neighbors had heard shouting.

Even Richard, who had stayed silent during breakfast, refused to lie when an attorney contacted him.

Days later, Preston finally appeared outside my condo.

He looked exhausted.

Gone was the confident man who had ordered me to apologize.

"I made a mistake," he said.

"You lost your temper," I corrected.

"It won't happen again."

"It already happened once."

He lowered his head.

"My family pushed me."

"No."

I looked directly at him.

"Your family revealed you."

"You made the choice."

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I handed him a single envelope.

Inside were divorce papers.

He stared at them without opening the seal.

"You'd really end a marriage after one day?"

I answered quietly.

"No."

"I'm ending it because of what happened in that one day."

He never found the right words.

He simply turned around and walked away.
