CHAPTER 2:Every Secret Leaves a Trail

Three days later, the headlines spread across Pennsylvania.

PREGNANT WOMAN PUSHED DOWN COURTHOUSE STAIRS.

CEO'S MISTRESS UNDER CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION.

TOP ATTORNEY REPRESENTS HIS OWN SISTER.

Television crews camped outside the hospital around the clock.

Reporters followed every member of the Harrington family.

Yet Harrison Cole never spoke to the press.

He was too busy preparing for war.

Khloe remained unconscious.

Her newborn daughter rested inside the neonatal intensive care unit, fighting for every breath.

Harrison visited them both every morning.

He always stopped at the nursery first.

The tiny girl weighed barely four pounds.

A transparent breathing tube covered her nose.

One impossibly small hand wrapped around Harrison's little finger.

He smiled for the first time since the accident.

"You have your mother's strength," he whispered.

"You'll need it."

That same afternoon, detectives arrived at Harrison's office carrying a search warrant.

"We recovered security footage from the courthouse."

"Is it clear?" Harrison asked.

The lead detective nodded.

"There wasn't an argument."

"There wasn't a struggle."

"Your sister never touched Vanessa."

He slid a tablet across the conference table.

Harrison pressed play.

The footage showed Khloe standing quietly near the top of the marble staircase, one hand resting on her pregnant belly.

Vanessa stepped closer.

She pointed a finger at Khloe.

Witnesses later confirmed they couldn't hear the conversation.

Then the video revealed everything.

Vanessa glanced over her shoulder.

Almost as if checking whether anyone was watching.

She raised both hands.

And shoved.

Hard.

Khloe never saw it coming.

She lost her balance instantly.

Within seconds, she disappeared down the staircase.

The video ended.

The room fell silent.

The detective spoke first.

"This wasn't negligence."

"This was intentional."

Harrison slowly closed the tablet.

"I know."

Across town, Vanessa Kensington sat inside an expensive downtown apartment, surrounded by half-packed designer luggage.

She had already booked a private flight to Switzerland.

Richard paced across the living room.

"You can't leave."

"I have no choice."

"They'll arrest me."

Richard grabbed her wrist.

"I'll fix this."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Fix it?"

"Your wife is in intensive care."

"The police have security footage."

"My fingerprints are on her dress."

She pulled away.

"This is over."

Richard's voice shook.

"I love you."

"No."

Vanessa zipped her suitcase.

"You loved having two women fight over you."

A loud knock echoed through the apartment.

Neither of them moved.

Another knock.

Harder.

Then came a voice from outside.

"Pennsylvania State Police."

"Open the door."

Vanessa's face turned white.

Richard slowly backed away.

The officers entered less than thirty seconds later.

"Vanessa Kensington?"

She couldn't answer.

"You are under arrest for attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and causing serious bodily injury to an unborn child."

An officer placed handcuffs around her wrists.

As they escorted her toward the elevator, she looked desperately at Richard.

"Do something."

He didn't move.

For the second time in a single week...

The man who promised to protect her stood perfectly still.

That evening, Harrison received another visitor.

A gray-haired forensic accountant placed six thick binders on his desk.

"I've spent forty-eight hours tracing the Harrington accounts."

"What did you find?"

The accountant removed a flash drive from his pocket.

"This isn't just hidden money."

"It's a criminal enterprise."

He opened the first binder.

"Over the last five years, Richard created eleven shell companies."

"Millions of dollars disappeared through fake consulting contracts."

"Luxury developments were deliberately overbilled."

"Investors were defrauded."

He opened another file.

"The offshore accounts stretch through the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg, and Singapore."

Harrison remained silent.

The accountant hesitated before opening the final binder.

"This is the part you need to see."

Inside lay a document dated four months earlier.

A draft divorce agreement.

Richard's signature already appeared at the bottom.

Khloe's signature line remained blank.

Attached to it was another document.

A private medical evaluation.

The accountant slid it across the desk.

"He hired a physician."

"To do what?"

"To testify that your sister suffered emotional instability caused by multiple miscarriages."

Harrison's jaw tightened.

The accountant continued quietly.

"If she challenged the divorce..."

"He planned to argue she was mentally unfit."

Another page followed.

A custody proposal.

Richard sought sole custody of the unborn child immediately after birth.

Harrison stared at the documents for a long time.

Every piece fit together.

The affair.

The hidden money.

The offshore accounts.

The divorce.

The custody plan.

Even the public image Richard had carefully built.

It had never been about love.

It had never been about Vanessa.

It had always been about control.

Harrison closed the binder.

For the first time since the courthouse attack, he allowed himself a faint smile.

Not because justice had arrived.

Because the evidence was finally complete.

He looked toward the city lights beyond his office window.

"Richard wanted a divorce."

He picked up the flash drive.

"I'm going to give him something much more permanent."

Outside, thunder rolled across the Manhattan skyline.

The war had officially begun.
