CHAPTER 1:The Promise Harrison Cole Never Broke

The operating room doors slammed shut.
The red emergency light above them flickered on.
Then everything fell silent.
Harrison Cole stood in the middle of the hospital corridor, his hands covered in his sister's blood.
Doctors hurried past him.
Nurses shouted medical terminology he barely heard.
Someone tried to hand him a towel.
He ignored it.
His eyes never left the operating room.
Richard Harrington arrived fifteen minutes later.
His expensive suit was perfectly pressed.
Not a single drop of blood stained his sleeves.
He stopped several feet away, unable to meet Harrison's eyes.
"I didn't mean for this to happen."
Harrison said nothing.
"I tried to stop it."
Silence.
"It happened so fast."
Still nothing.
Richard swallowed hard.
"I never thought Vanessa would—"
A single look from Harrison silenced him.
Not rage.
Not hatred.
Something colder.
Something far more dangerous.
"You watched," Harrison finally said.
His voice remained calm.
"You stood there while your pregnant wife fell thirty marble steps."
Richard opened his mouth.
No words came out.
"You didn't touch her."
Harrison took one slow step closer.
"You didn't call her name."
Another step.
"You didn't even kneel beside her."
Richard instinctively stepped backward.
"I panicked."
"No."
Harrison's eyes never left his.
"You made a choice."
The hallway fell silent.
Every nurse.
Every security officer.
Every visitor nearby stopped pretending not to listen.
"You chose the woman who pushed her."
Richard lowered his head.
Before either man spoke again, the operating room doors burst open.
A trauma surgeon hurried toward them.
"Who's Harrison Cole?"
"I am."
"The baby is alive."
Harrison closed his eyes.
For one brief second.
Only one.
"But your sister..."
The surgeon hesitated.
"She's suffered severe internal injuries."
"Will she live?"
"We don't know."
The words landed like concrete.
"We've stopped the bleeding, but she's lost a tremendous amount of blood."
"And the baby?"
"A little girl."
A smile almost appeared on Harrison's face.
Almost.
"She's premature but breathing."
"Can I see her?"
"In a few minutes."
The surgeon paused again.
"Your sister regained consciousness for less than thirty seconds before anesthesia."
Harrison looked up.
"She left a message."
"What did she say?"
The doctor's expression softened.
"She asked us to tell you..."
He glanced toward Richard.
"...'Protect my daughter from her father.'"
The hallway became perfectly still.
Richard's face drained of color.
"No..."
"Those were her exact words."
Richard stumbled backward until his shoulders struck the wall.
"I love my daughter."
Harrison looked at him without expression.
"No."
His voice was almost gentle.
"You love yourself."
Security officers quietly escorted Richard away while Harrison remained outside the operating room.
For the first time in his career...
The man who had never lost a courtroom battle whispered a promise no judge would ever hear.
"I couldn't save you from falling, Khloe."
He looked through the operating room window.
May you like
"But I swear..."
"No one will ever hurt your daughter again."
