CHAPTER 3 — Judgment

The emergency cesarean section lasted nearly two hours.
Outside the operating room...
Harrison remained perfectly still.
Richard paced the hallway.
Finally he spoke.
"It was an accident."
Harrison didn't even look at him.
"You watched."
Richard swallowed.
"I froze."
"No."
Harrison finally turned.
"You calculated."
Before Richard could respond...
Two FBI agents entered the hallway.
"Richard Harrington?"
"Yes?"
"You're under arrest for securities fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice."
Richard blinked.
"What?"
Another team arrived.
Then officers from the state attorney general's office.
Then IRS investigators.
Everything happened at once.
Bank accounts frozen.
Corporate headquarters searched.
Luxury vehicles seized.
Computers confiscated.
News helicopters circled overhead.
Harrison watched silently.
Every warrant had already been signed.
Months earlier.
Vanessa wasn't released on bail.
Video footage from six different angles clearly showed the shove.
More than thirty witnesses gave statements.
Security cameras recorded everything.
There was no defense.
Hours later a surgeon finally emerged.
"The baby survived."
Harrison closed his eyes.
"And Khloe?"
The doctor's smile faded.
"She's alive."
"But recovery will be long."
Six months later...
The trial became national news.
Investors testified.
Former employees testified.
Federal accountants explained years of financial crimes.
Then Harrison called the final witness.
Richard himself.
After four relentless hours of cross-examination...
Richard admitted he had hidden assets.
Falsified reports.
Transferred investor funds.
The courtroom fell silent.
The jury needed less than three hours.
Guilty.
On every count.
Vanessa received a lengthy prison sentence for aggravated assault resulting in catastrophic bodily injury to both mother and child.

She cried when the verdict was read.
No one else did.
