CHAPTER 1 — The First Move

Harrison didn't answer immediately.

He walked to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking downtown Philadelphia, one hand resting inside his pocket while the other held Richard's financial records.

Streetlights reflected across the glass.

His own reflection looked like a stranger.

Cold.

Methodical.

Merciless.

Finally, he spoke.

"You let him think he already won."

Khloe stared at her brother.

"What?"

"You smile."

"You go home."

"You pretend you know nothing."

Her breathing caught.

"I can't."

"You can."

His eyes settled on her swollen stomach.

"Because you're no longer protecting your marriage."

"You're protecting your child."

For nearly twenty years Harrison Cole had dismantled corporations, politicians, and organized financial crime.

He never attacked first.

He waited.

Collected evidence.

Built an airtight case.

Then he erased every escape route.

Richard Harrington had no idea who he had chosen to betray.

Within forty-eight hours Harrison assembled a private team.

A forensic accountant.

A cyber investigator.

A retired federal prosecutor.

An investigator who had once spent twelve years inside the FBI's financial crimes division.

Every email.

Every offshore transfer.

Every shell corporation.

Every hidden property.

Every burner phone.

Nothing escaped them.

The deeper they dug, the uglier it became.

Richard hadn't merely been cheating.

He had embezzled money from investors.

Bribed city officials.

Falsified environmental reports.

Used construction materials that violated federal safety codes.

If exposed...

Thousands of luxury apartments could become evidence.

One investigator looked up from his laptop.

"This isn't divorce."

"This is organized financial fraud."

Harrison nodded.

"I know."

Meanwhile Richard believed life couldn't be better.

Vanessa sat across from him inside an expensive rooftop restaurant, swirling champagne.

"When are you finally leaving her?"

"Soon."

"And the baby?"

Richard shrugged.

"The courts usually give mothers custody."

Vanessa smiled.

"Unless she has nothing."

Richard smirked.

"Exactly."

Neither of them noticed the waiter quietly photographing the documents Richard had left beside his wine glass.

The waiter wasn't a waiter.

He worked for Harrison.

That evening Khloe returned home.

Richard greeted her with a kiss on the forehead.

"How was your doctor's appointment?"

She smiled softly.

"Everything's fine."

For the first time in months...

She lied.

Later that night she lay awake while Richard slept beside her.

One hand rested on her belly.

The baby kicked.

"I'm trying," she whispered.

"I promise."

The following morning Harrison received a phone call.

"We found something bigger."

"How big?"

The investigator hesitated.

"Richard isn't planning divorce."

"He's planning bankruptcy."

Harrison frowned.

"He intends to transfer every asset before filing."

"And?"

"There's a life insurance policy."

Silence.

"On Khloe."

Harrison slowly lowered the phone.

"How much?"

"Twenty million dollars."

The room became deathly quiet.

One question echoed inside Harrison's mind.

May you like

Was Richard simply preparing for divorce...

Or preparing for something much darker?
