Chapter 2: The Papers Ethan Wanted Signed

While the officers questioned Vanessa outside the room, my father quietly placed a thick folder on my hospital tray.

"I think it's time you see what your husband wanted you to sign."

The first page made my stomach twist.

Transfer of marital assets.

The second...

Power of attorney.

The third...

Authorization allowing Ethan to sell my company shares without my approval.

I looked up slowly.

"He planned this while I was in labor."

My father nodded.

"We had our attorneys examine every document this morning."

I turned toward Ethan.

"You weren't protecting our family."

"You were stealing it."

He collapsed into the chair beside the wall.

"Lena... I made mistakes."

"Mistakes?"

I held up the paperwork.

"You waited until I was medicated after pregnancy complications."

"You lied."

"You manipulated me."

"And you expected me to trust you."

His voice cracked.

"Vanessa pushed me into all of this."

I almost laughed.

"No."

"You walked there yourself."

Just then my father's attorney entered carrying another envelope.

"The divorce petition has already been prepared."

Ethan stared in disbelief.

"So you planned this?"

"No," I answered calmly.

"You planned it."

"I simply refused to become your victim."

For the first time since we'd met, Ethan realized he wasn't losing an argument.

He was losing everything.

His marriage.

May you like

His reputation.

His future.
