Chapter 1: The Recording They Never Knew Existed

No one spoke.

The only sound left in the room was the relentless beeping of the fetal monitor.

My father turned toward the head nurse.

"I'd like security to preserve every second of footage from this room. Immediately."

Vanessa laughed.

"You honestly think a camera will prove anything? She probably attacked herself."

Before anyone could respond, the hospital director rushed in.

"Mr. Carter," he said respectfully, extending his hand toward my father. "We've already secured the footage."

Vanessa frowned.

"You know him?"

The director nodded.

"He's been one of this hospital's largest donors for nearly fifteen years."

The color drained from Vanessa's face.

My father folded his hands behind his back.

"Play the recording."

Within minutes, a security monitor was wheeled into the room.

Everyone watched.

There was no audio.

It didn't matter.

The footage showed Vanessa entering alone.

It showed her leaning over my bed.

It showed her grabbing my hair with both hands and violently jerking my head backward.

It showed me protecting my stomach instead of fighting back.

Then came the nurses rushing inside.

Finally...

Ethan appeared.

Not to protect his pregnant wife.

To comfort Vanessa.

No one in the room missed that detail.

The silence became unbearable.

The director slowly looked toward Ethan.

"Would you care to explain why your first concern was the woman who committed the assault?"

Ethan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa suddenly snapped.

"Fine! I grabbed her hair!"

She pointed at me.

"But she stole my future!"

My father smiled for the first time.

"A confession."

He looked at the director.

"I believe we're finished here."

Ten minutes later, two police officers entered the room.

Vanessa's confidence disappeared the moment she saw the handcuffs.
