CHAPTER 2: THE DAUGHTER HE THOUGHT WAS DEAD

The silence in the ballroom became unbearable.
Vanessa looked from the photograph to the crying waitress.
Then back to her husband.
"What is she talking about?"
Richard couldn't answer immediately.
His eyes never left the young woman's face.
Now that he looked carefully, he saw it.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
The same dimples Emily had possessed.
It was impossible to deny.
She was his daughter.
"My God..."
The words escaped his lips.
The young woman finally spoke.
"My name is Lily."
Richard nodded slowly.
Tears streamed down his face.
"I searched for you both for years."
Vanessa stepped backward.
"What do you mean years?"
Richard swallowed hard.
"Before I met you, Emily and I were engaged."
The guests listened in stunned silence.
"Then a flood destroyed her town. Authorities told me there were no survivors from her neighborhood."
Lily reached into her bag and removed a bundle of old letters.
"My mother survived."
Richard stared.
"She spent years trying to contact you."
Lily handed him the letters.
Every single one had been returned unopened.
Richard's expression darkened.
Someone had intercepted them.
Someone had made sure he never received them.
Vanessa suddenly remembered something.
Twenty-two years ago, Richard's mother had fiercely opposed his relationship with Emily.
A terrible realization appeared on her face.
"Oh my God..."
Richard looked at the envelopes.
His late mother's handwriting appeared on several of them.
The truth struck him like lightning.
His mother had hidden every letter.
She had separated him from Emily.
And because of that deception, Emily had spent her entire life raising Lily alone.
Lily lowered her head.
"Mom passed away three months ago."
Richard broke completely.
The daughter he had mourned for decades had lived.
The woman he had loved had survived.
Yet he had lost twenty-two irreplaceable years because of a lie.
Guests wiped away tears.
Even Vanessa stood speechless.
The jealousy that had fueled her anger only minutes earlier had transformed into shame.
Then Lily quietly revealed the final reason she had come.
"I didn't come here for money."
Richard looked up.
"I came because Mom's last wish was for me to meet my father once."

The entire room fell silent again.
And for the first time that night, Vanessa realized she had slapped a grieving daughter searching for family.
