CHAPTER 1: THE PHOTOGRAPH ON THE MARBLE FLOOR

The sound of the slap echoed across the grand banquet hall.

Crystal glasses rattled.

Conversations stopped.

Dozens of wealthy guests turned to stare as Vanessa Sterling, one of the city's most influential socialites, stood trembling with rage before a young waitress.

"How dare you flirt with my husband!" Vanessa screamed.

The waitress, no older than twenty-two, stumbled backward from the force of the blow.

Tears instantly filled her eyes.

"I wasn't—"

"Don't lie to me!"

Vanessa pointed toward her husband, Richard Sterling.

"I saw you talking to him. I saw the way you looked at him!"

The guests watched silently.

No one dared challenge Vanessa.

The frightened waitress shook her head desperately.

"Please, ma'am, that's not why I came."

But Vanessa wasn't listening.

Years of insecurity, jealousy, and suspicion had exploded all at once.

"You gold-digging little liar!"

The young woman burst into tears.

Her hands trembled.

And then something slipped from her apron pocket.

A faded photograph fluttered onto the polished marble floor.

The room fell silent.

Richard glanced down casually.

Then his face lost all color.

His knees nearly buckled.

"No..."

His voice cracked.

The photograph showed a young man in military uniform standing beside a smiling woman holding a baby girl.

Richard slowly bent down and picked it up.

His hands shook violently.

Because the man in the picture was him.

And the baby...

The baby was the waitress.

Vanessa stared.

"What is this?"

The young waitress covered her face and sobbed.

"My mother told me to find him."

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

The entire banquet hall froze.

Because the powerful businessman suddenly looked less like a millionaire and more like a broken man haunted by a forgotten past.

"Your mother's name..." he whispered.

The girl nodded.

"Emily Carter."

Richard dropped into a chair.

Twenty-two years of buried memories came crashing back.

Because Emily Carter had once been the love of his life.

And he had believed she and their unborn child had died in a devastating flood decades ago.

But somehow...

May you like

The child had survived.

And she was standing in front of him now.
