Chapter 16 - Evelyn’s Last Bargain:

Evelyn dragged Chloe toward the upper floor.
Mia followed.
Richard shouted her name, but the fire separated them.
Smoke darkened the staircase.
Mia climbed after Evelyn.
“Let her go.”
Evelyn turned near the balcony.
Her hair hung loose around her face.
Blood had soaked through the bandage on her shoulder.
“I need the certificates.”
“They are already filed with the court.”
“I need proof that Jonathan forged the transfer.”
“You want leverage.”
“I want to survive prison.”
Chloe looked at Mia.
“Don’t give her anything.”
Evelyn pressed the gun harder against her.
“I have spent my entire life watching men commit crimes and leave women holding the evidence.”
“Jonathan will claim I planned everything.”
“You did plan part of it,” Mia said.
“I stole money.”
“I altered records.”
“I helped hide Laura.”
“But I did not burn Rosa’s house.”
“I did not order the boat.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“And you chose diamonds.”
The accusation landed.
Evelyn looked toward the smoke filling the ceiling.
“I grew up with nothing.”
“My mother cleaned hotel rooms.”
“She died owing money to the hospital that treated her.”
“When Jonathan offered me power, I promised myself I would never kneel again.”
“So you made other women kneel.”
Evelyn’s face tightened.
Mia stepped closer.
“You hit us because you saw yourself in us.”
“Poor.”
“Disposable.”
“Standing inside a house that believed we did not belong.”
“You hated us because we reminded you what you traded away.”
The gun trembled.
Chloe drove her heel into Evelyn’s injured foot.
Evelyn cried out.
Mia lunged.
They fell against the balcony rail.
The gun slid across the floor.
A figure emerged through the smoke.
Jonathan.
He had escaped federal custody during transport.
An officer later discovered that Daniel Price had arranged the route.
Jonathan picked up the gun.
Evelyn stared at him.
“You were going to let me burn.”
“You were always replaceable.”
He fired.
Evelyn fell.
The bullet struck her abdomen.
Jonathan grabbed Mia.
He held the gun beneath her jaw.
“Chloe, bring me the archive keys.”
Chloe stood frozen.
“Now.”
Smoke alarms screamed.
The floor beneath them grew hot.
Chloe reached inside her pocket.
She removed both silver keys.
Jonathan forced Mia toward the lower stairs.
They passed Evelyn.
She reached weakly for Mia’s ankle.
“The river tunnel,” she whispered.
“Third brick beneath the founder’s name.”
Jonathan kicked her hand away.
He pushed Mia toward the archive.
Chloe followed.
Richard, Laura, Rosa, Nora, and Hale had reached the memorial wall.
Rosa removed the third brick beneath Samuel’s engraved name.
A metal lever appeared.
She pulled it.
The archive floor opened, revealing stone steps.
“Everyone inside,” Hale ordered.
Jonathan appeared at the end of the corridor with Mia.
“Stay where you are.”
Richard turned.
Jonathan’s gun pointed toward Mia’s head.
“You could still leave,” Richard said.
“With what?”
“My name destroyed?”
“My shares frozen?”
“My mother remembered as a servant?”
Richard moved closer.
“Our father failed you.”
“I failed to see what that created.”
“But none of that gives you ownership of the lives you destroyed.”
Jonathan laughed.
“You sound like Samuel.”
“He apologized when death made apology inexpensive.”
Mia felt Jonathan’s grip shift.
She looked toward Chloe.
Her sister held the silver keys loosely.
Mia gave one small nod.
Chloe threw them in opposite directions.
Jonathan turned instinctively.
Mia drove her head backward into his face.
Richard tackled him.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Hale restrained Jonathan.
The burning ventilation shaft collapsed behind them.
Everyone descended into the tunnel.
Chloe tried to return for Evelyn.
Mia held her back.
“She shot us.”
“She is still alive.”
Laura looked toward the flames.
“We do not become them.”
Richard and Hale returned upstairs.
They found Evelyn unconscious near the balcony.
Together, they carried her into the tunnel seconds before the archive ceiling collapsed.
The passage led beneath the river to an old maintenance station.
Firefighters met them at the exit.
The foundation headquarters burned through the night.
Jonathan was placed in federal custody under armed guard.
Evelyn underwent emergency surgery.
Every person escaped alive.
But the original paper archive had been destroyed.
Rosa’s memory card contained copies.
Jonathan’s attorneys claimed digital files could be altered.
The criminal case now depended on testimony.
Then Hale received a call from the fire marshal.
Investigators had found a body inside the ruins.
The remains belonged to a woman.
Near the body lay Rosa Torres’s gold pendant.
Mia turned toward her mother.
Rosa reached for her neck.
The pendant she had recovered at the hospital was gone.
Someone had placed it inside the fire.
Jonathan was creating evidence even from a jail cell.
May you like
The dead woman was meant to become Rosa.
And if the world believed Rosa had died in the building, her testimony could disappear with her.
