Chapter 10 - The Woman in the Hallway:

Mia ran from the hospital room.
Chloe followed.
They searched the elevators, stairwells, and waiting areas.
No woman resembling Rosa appeared.
Hale ordered officers to seal the building.
Security footage showed a hooded figure entering through the service entrance.
The figure avoided every camera except one.
For less than a second, the woman’s face turned toward the lens.
Burn scars crossed her left cheek.
Mia pressed her fingers against the screen.
“That’s her.”
She remembered her mother’s dark eyes.
The way she tilted her head when listening.
Even after six years, Mia knew her.
Rosa entered the hospital but never reached Laura’s room.
Another camera showed Elias following her into the basement.
Neither appeared leaving.
Hale led the search below.
The basement contained laundry rooms, supply corridors, and maintenance tunnels.
They found blood beside an emergency exit.
A small gold pendant lay near it.
Mia recognized it.
Rosa had worn the pendant every day when Mia was a child.
Inside was a photograph of the sisters.
“She was here,” Chloe whispered.
A service door opened onto an alley.
Tire tracks led toward the highway.
Elias had taken Rosa again.
Richard received a call from Jonathan.
“You have something I want,” Jonathan said.
“You have Rosa.”
“I may know where she is.”
“What do you want?”
“Resign before tomorrow’s board meeting.”
“Transfer voting authority to me.”
“And instruct Mia to surrender Laura’s ledger.”
Richard put the call on speaker.
Mia stepped closer.
“Let me speak to my mother.”
Jonathan laughed.
“You sound exactly like her.”
“Rosa never understood when she had lost.”
“She defeated you for six years.”
“She survived you.”
“She protected Laura.”
“She brought us to Richard’s house.”
The last statement was a guess.
Jonathan’s silence confirmed it.
Mia understood why Richard had hired them despite their lack of formal references.
Someone had anonymously recommended the sisters to his estate manager.
Rosa had placed them inside the only house where the keys could be reunited.
“You didn’t find us,” Mia said.
“Our mother led us here.”
Jonathan ended the call.
The board meeting was scheduled for ten the next morning.
Richard’s attorneys advised him to resign temporarily.
He refused.
Laura insisted on leaving the hospital to testify.
Doctors warned that her body remained weak from years of forced medication.
She signed herself out.
At the estate, the group prepared their evidence.
The leather ledger revealed shell companies, payment amounts, and coded initials.
It did not include Jonathan’s full name.
The original archive remained their only chance.
Hale agreed to accompany Mia, Richard, and Nora to the foundation headquarters.
Chloe stayed with Laura under police protection.
Before they left, Chloe hugged Mia.
“Bring her back.”
“I will.”
“You always say that.”
“This time, believe me.”
The original Vance Foundation building stood unused in downtown Boston.
Its upper floors had been converted into storage.
The underground archive was hidden behind an old records room.
Two keyholes rested on opposite sides of a steel door.
Mia inserted the vase key.
Nora inserted the music-box key.
They turned them at the same time.
The door opened.
Metal shelves filled the chamber.
Hundreds of boxes contained donation records and property deeds.
A row of numbered lockers lined the rear wall.
Locker 217 held a black case.
Inside were original bank ledgers, photographs, and audio recordings.
Hale examined the first folder.
“This can destroy them.”
A sound came from the outer corridor.
The archive door slammed shut.
The lights went out.
A recorded voice filled the chamber.
Jonathan.
“Thank you for opening the vault.”
Gas hissed through the vents.
Richard covered Nora’s mouth with his jacket.
Mia searched the walls.
The silver keys remained trapped in the locks outside.
Hale fired at the ventilation grille.
The bullet ricocheted.
Nora pointed toward a maintenance hatch beneath the lowest shelf.
They pulled it open.
The opening was barely wide enough for a person.
Nora crawled first.
Mia passed the black case through.
Richard and Hale followed.
They emerged inside an underground parking garage.
A van waited near the exit.
Elias stood beside it with a gun.
Rosa sat inside the open rear doors.
Her wrists were tied.
Blood covered one side of her face.
“Mia,” she said.
The sound of her mother’s voice froze Mia in place.
Elias raised the gun.
“Put down the case.”
Hale slowly lowered his weapon.
Mia placed the evidence on the ground.
Elias kicked it toward the van.
Richard stepped forward.
“Release Rosa.”
Elias smiled.
“Jonathan said you would try to negotiate.”
“He also said you still haven’t realized there’s a second traitor in your house.”
A shot came from behind them.
Hale collapsed.
Nora screamed.
Richard turned.
One of the police officers assigned to protect them stood near the stairwell.
His weapon remained pointed at Richard.
Elias grabbed the case and pulled Rosa into the van.
Before the doors closed, Rosa shouted one sentence.
“Don’t let Jonathan reach the shareholder vote!”
The van disappeared up the ramp.
Hale lay motionless on the concrete.
Blood spread beneath his shoulder.
May you like
The traitor aimed again.
This time, directly at Nora.
