Chapter 5 – The Empire Falls
Richard Whitlock attempted to flee the country.
He never reached the airport.
Federal agents intercepted him using financial evidence Caleb had preserved and the documents Hannah recovered.
Claire was arrested for destroying evidence, conspiracy, witness intimidation, and participating in financial fraud.
Every guest who had remained silent during Hannah's humiliation watched the trial unfold on television.
The woman they had mocked became the prosecution's strongest witness.
Months later...
On a snowy December morning...
A healthy baby girl entered the world.
Hannah named her Hope Brooks.
Not because life had been kind.
But because hope had survived everything life had tried to destroy.
Daniel stood outside the hospital room holding flowers.
"I've prepared a trust fund," he said awkwardly.
Hannah smiled.
"You don't owe us anything."
"I owe Aaron."
She looked surprised.
Daniel continued quietly.
"He died trying to expose corruption inside my empire."
He placed a framed photograph on the bedside table.
Aaron.
Laughing.
Paint on his face.
Standing in the tiny yellow nursery he had built with his own hands.
