Chapter 9 - THE BROTHER WHO NEVER DIED

Marco survived.
Barely.
The bullet passed through his shoulder.
No major artery.
He regained consciousness after surgery and demanded Luca listen before judging him.
The scar Sofia mentioned was not Marco’s eyebrow.
That scar came from a knife.
Another man in Luca’s inner circle had a bullet scar.
Gianni Russo.
Upper chest.
Twelve years earlier.
Same warehouse fire where his brother Stefano supposedly died.
Emma felt the floor disappear beneath her.
Gianni.
Again.
Too many roads led back to him.
Luca refused to believe it without proof.
Then Marco explained the bank ambush.
Gianni changed the security route thirty minutes before arrival.
Only three people knew the vault schedule.
Luca.
Emma.
Gianni.
Marco followed the original route.
He saw two armed men entering the service corridor.
Tried to stop them.
Got shot.
The attackers escaped when police responded.
Gianni disappeared.
His phone went offline.
His house empty.
Then Stefano called Luca.
Video.
Alive.
Older.
Burn scars across one side of his neck.
Gianni sat beside him.
Not restrained.
Not threatened.
Together.
Luca’s face became ice.
“Gianni.”
His oldest friend stared through the screen.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma closed her eyes.
There are apologies that exist only because consequences arrived.
“What did you do?”
Gianni answered,
“I kept my brother alive.”
“For twelve years?”
“Yes.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“Did you kill Sofia?”
“No.”
“Did Stefano?”
Silence.
Stefano leaned forward.
“Your wife should have stayed out of family business.”
Luca stood so fast the chair flew backward.
Emma grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.”
“He killed her.”
“You’re on a screen.”
That stopped him.
Barely.
Stefano smiled.
“Sofia thought she could expose Vittorio.”
“She didn’t understand the old man was useful.”
Emma’s stomach tightened.
Useful.
Not mastermind.
“What do you want?” Luca asked.
“The hard drive.”
“No.”
“Then Elena Bianchi dies.”
They showed Sofia’s sister.
Alive.
Tied to a chair.
Terrified.
Emma felt sick.
Stefano continued.
“And after Elena, we find the waitress.”
Luca’s voice became quiet.
“You already did.”
Stefano smiled.
“I found her apartment.”
Emma’s fists tightened.
“Noah’s box.”
“Sentimental trash.”
“I wanted the key.”
Rage nearly blinded her.
Luca put one hand behind her back.
Not restraining.
Steadying.
Stefano gave them twelve hours.
Hard drive for Elena.
Luca agreed too quickly.
After the call, Emma turned.
“You’re not giving him the real drive.”
“No.”
“Good.”
“You’re not coming.”
“Yes, I am.”
“No.”
“Luca.”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“I have already brought enough death into your life.”
“You didn’t kill my mother.”
“We don’t know that.”
“You didn’t kill Noah.”
“No.”
“You didn’t steal the box.”
“No.”
“Then stop making yourself the center of every tragedy.”
That silenced him.
Emma continued.
“This is my mother’s evidence too.”
“I am coming.”
Luca looked furious.
Then resigned.
“Fine.”
The exchange took place at an abandoned freight terminal.
Federal police were not involved.
Yet.
Luca did not trust enough institutions.
Emma hated that.
But they had one advantage.
Sofia’s hard drive was encrypted.
Emma’s mother had designed the original code architecture.
Only one directory had been opened.
The rest required a password.
Emma guessed it.
EMMA-NOAH?
Wrong.
Diane’s birthday?
Wrong.
Then she remembered Sofia’s words.
Surviving is also a journey.
The medal.
St. Christopher.
Password:
JOURNEY314
The drive opened.
Inside were financial records.
Photographs.
Audio.
And a file labeled:
STEFANO — VITTORIO — GIANNI
Emma opened it moments before leaving.
The first recording destroyed their assumptions.
Vittorio’s voice:
I told you Sofia is off limits.
Stefano:
She knows too much.
Vittorio:
Then scare her. Do not touch the child. Do not touch Sofia.
Gianni:
My brother can handle it.
Vittorio:
Your brother is exactly the reason I don’t trust this.
Emma stared.
Vittorio was corrupt.
Dangerous.
Planning to seize power.
But he had explicitly ordered Sofia kept alive.
Stefano disobeyed.
Then another recording.
Gianni alone with Stefano.
If Sofia dies, Luca destroys Vittorio.
If Luca destroys Vittorio, the family needs someone neutral.
Stefano laughed.
You.
Gianni answered:
Me.
The truth was uglier.
Gianni had not merely protected his brother.
He planned to use Sofia’s murder to start a war between Luca and Vittorio.

Then inherit what remained.
The man Luca trusted most had designed the entire family collapse.
