At twenty-one, Matteo inherited direct voting rights in part of the Bianchi trust.
Reporters called him the billion-dollar heir.
He hated it.
Luca hated reporters.
Emma hated both of them complaining.
The Bianchi Holdings empire had changed.
Independent board.
No Charles.
No hidden Romano money.
Matteo could have become chairman eventually.
He refused.
“I want law school.”
Luca stared.
“You can do both.”
“I don’t want both.”
“You are walking away from—”
Emma looked at him.
Luca stopped.
Old habit.
Control.
He corrected himself.
“What do you want?”
Matteo smiled.
“Public-interest law.”
Luca looked physically wounded.
“That pays nothing.”
Emma kicked his ankle.
“Ow.”
Matteo laughed.
He transferred much of his future voting authority into professional governance structures.
Kept financial security.
Rejected dynastic control.
Luca struggled.
Then accepted.
That was perhaps his greatest transformation.
Not dismantling criminal operations.
Not prison.
Letting his son choose a life Luca would never have chosen.
The old Romano empire ended not in blood.
But irrelevance.
